I'm a home baker who sells at farmers markets. I use AI all the time for ideas to improve recipes I find online. My experience has been hit or miss, but the best use is when something goes wrong and I explain what happened and AI has been very helpful with suggestions to correct the problem.

This perfectly illustrates the issues with ChatGPT and generative AI in general. It is good at creating *plausible* output. Not necessarily correct output. The value in using it in its current form is to let it generate output (ideally multiple options) and then to review, select and modify it. With a few simple tweaks (increasing the amount of liquid to about the level of the first "wrong" attempt, including the vanilla extract in the milk mix, folding in the blueberries half way through and replacing the nutmeg with cinnamon, maybe reducing the baking time or temp) this would be a pretty decent recipe I think. But doing those alterations takes a lot of knowledge in the subject matter. So you can't just use the output and run with it. I would be interested in seeing the result of you using a prompt for a recipe you've never done before (or at least haven't developed your personal refined version of) and using that as a basis and applying any alterations where you deem necessary. I think that one would turn out much better.

This is a great take on this and I agree with you. As an experienced baker I could absolutely see using ChatGPT as a tool to develop new, actually good recipes. I could provide further input and tweaks and better props in order to develop a more sophisticated recipe that's actually good. However, right now, at least in the food blogging community (it's a thing 😂) and in some other spheres, there is a lot of concern that the average person will, rather than searching for recipes online, simply ask ChatGPT for a recipe and make it as-is. At this point, I definitely think it's clear ChatGPT is not ideal as a one-stop recipe source.

The best use of AI in recipes is probably for inexperienced people in kitchen who want to elaborate on every step of recipe. Although it sometimes just forgets what you asked initially and it seems like that's what happened for you, I think you sometimes need to copypaste its entire recipe back to it to make sure it gets the entire context. Also I've watched many other people trying out ChatGPT recipes and the most fun are the ones where you give it completely random ingredients you have on hand and force it to make a recipe out of it. That's when it stops trying to find the most popular generic recipes and gets interesting. It can get really chaotic and fun to watch, especially if ingredients are really wild and not something you'd usually see.

This video prompted me to ask ChatGPT for a blueberry muffin recipe and I somehow got a way different recipe than the one it generated for you. This is what I got for anyone who may want to try it: 2 cups AP flour 1.5 tsp baking powder 0.5 tsp baking soda 0.5 tsp salt 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened 1 cup white sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup sour cream 1.5 cups blueberries 1) Preheat oven to 375F, line muffin tins with liners. 2) whisk dry ingredients (not including sugar) in a medium bowl. Set aside 3) cream butter and sugar til light and fluffy. 4) add eggs 1 at a time, then add vanilla 5) gradually add dry ingredients alternating with sour cream beginning and ending with dry mixture. Mix til just combined 6) gently fold in blueberries. Don’t overmix 7) divide batter into liners, fill about 2/3 full 8) bake in oven for about 18-20 mins or until toothpick comes out clean. 9) let muffins cool in pan for a few minutes then transfer to wire rack to cook completely This seems more promising than the one it generated for you

I have asked gpt for several things.. Cake, cookies, sauces.. Its pretty horrible at recipes. It gets really bad if you ask it to use bakers math. Ive had to point out errors to it, which is fine if you know what youre doing and can spot the error, but pretty bad if you think you will be able to rely on it when you dont know.. One thing it regularly messes up on with bakers math is not counting sugar as a liquid..
