I've tried all three ..... I think you even went to a "good" Dickie's .... None of the ones I've tried even looked that good . Every 4 or 5 years I'll try one and I'm good for another 4 or 5 years . Buckee's is a safe bet when on the road but not a destination bbq. It is way better than any drive thru burger you can ever get .... I do have a soft spot for Rudy's. I visited the original several times in the 90s and love their attempt to bring the original vibe to their locations. The outdoor seating, the communal seating, served on paper and sold by the pound really keeps the old school central Texas experience alive. .... I can pick a Rudy's for a quick Saturday afternoon lunch with the kids over a burger or pizza anytime. Not every BBQ experience needs to be a pit master epicurean experience. It deserves a spot as everyday food . And places like Rudy's or HEB are a special places that understand that. Unfortunately there are others in Texas like Dicky's and even Miller's (not sure if they're still around. Haven been to SA in so long) that don't quite keep up the quality as they could. But even then there are days a plate of their brisket is still better than a frozen hamburger patty sloped together with the bacon, cheese, craze sauce of the month between two buns. or frozen breaded chicken, that half breading once again paired with the cool sauce of the month that's required to choke it down .... Ok evidently i have a strong pinion than I thought I did when I started this .lol .... It is lunch time and it might be time for me to hit a Rudy's BTW Rudy's breakfast tacos in the morning are a awesome way to start the day .. they're not traditional but they are Texas

People choose these kinds of places because even though the quality is like 40% worse than traditional BBQ, the convenience/price is about 95% better. Those big name joints have hours long wait times. Meanwhile the line at Rudy’s is less than 10 minutes (and sometimes 0 minutes).

There's a place in the Seattle area called BBQ Pete's. They deliver faster than McDonald's when I get them from Uber Eats. The Q I get isn't going to show up at the Best of the West Rib Cook-off in Reno (technically Sparks, for the northern Nevadans in the room) and take home any prizes, but on a lazy Sunday afternoon I just want to eat a slab or ribs or a pulled pork sandwich with a good sauce on it while I watch football, and that, I think, is the niche that "fast food BBQ" offers. If I want a great BBQ experience, I'll book a flight to Texas, or east Tennessee, or a trip to my collegiate stomping grounds in Nevada on Labor Day weekend, and pig out. If I want a big pile of BBQ-flavored meat and don't care overmuch about greatness, I order BBQ Pete's.

The only downside to Buc-ees BBQ is how much sauce they use. Now I like BBQ sauce but I'm also a firm believer that you should taste the meat first than the sauce. They use so much sauce it drowns out the taste of everything else. They have a 3 meat burger for $13.49 which the meat serves only as texture, the taste is purely BBQ sauce. BBQ is an easy out for poorly cooked meat. Their pulled pork might as well just be a roast boiled in BBQ sauce.

Why are we going to fast food bbq? First off, as someone that has tried the best bbq in Texas, price. I love terry blacks, Hutchins, etc. but Dickey’s has an app and email vouchers for two for one. The value supersedes craft bbq for quantity and convenience. Bbq in Texas has gotten ridiculous in pricing. I get it though, prime brisket vs bottom tier, I’d rather go to a nice steakhouse or get sushi for the price of eating at terry blacks. The unsung heroes like Al’s on inwood in Dallas or backcountry bbq on Greenville, Bartleys in grapevine (for their ribs) are the places I’d rather visit on a monthly basis rather than the hyped up bbq spots that leave you in price shock.

All I have to say is that it is sad that the original location of Dickey's has gone so far down hill. When I lived in Dallas 20 years ago that was my neighborhood and I had my company just a block down Hendersona and our office ordered Dickey's twice a week and it was pretty darn good for the price. Maybe had dry brisket 1-2 times in over 100 visits. We found out that lunch was better than dinner for the meats and the staff would accomdate any request we had without complaint because we were regulars and we know how to order and get in and out in 7 minutes for takeout. And we tipped the staff bucket modestly but regular. Sad it's no longer so good. After I moved to Florida somebody opened a chain franchise of Dickeys in JAX and I'd drive over there every few months to get authentic Texas brisket. Wasn't world class but compared to Florida BBQ it was Grade A. Floridians don't have any clue how to cook brisket but unfortunately they keep trying. Florida BBQ is popular and sucks.

Given the fact to get "natrauul" Smoke flavor you need time and no one I know would wait in a line for 5+ hours for just a meal... It makes sense that no BBQ rastraunt makes BBQ to order. So vy the franch meaning of fast food atleast all BQQ rastraunts are fast food as non of them serve it made to order and you can just grab and go. Which if you didn't know the French have nver invented anything beyond sit down fine dining rasterunts and street food...
