speaking of dystopian walmarts: all 3 of the walmarts in my town replaced ALL of their cashiers with self-checkout lines, the employees are literally only there to fulfill online pickup orders and if you try to talk to a single one of them they either look at you like YOU'RE the weird one for asking an employee where the yogurt is OR like they've been a ghost for 500 years and you're the first person who has ever been able to see them

That thing about the smartfridge and already having a gallon of milk just absolutely slays me. This is in the _metaverse_ and you're not actually _at_ Walmart, if you're wondering whether you already have milk you can just take the headset off and _look in the fridge yourself_ to find out! Who the hell needs their smart devices to tell them what's going on in their house when they're already _in_ the house? Am I supposed to never take my headset off? Do I just live in the metaverse now and have trusted family members or neighbors feed me the food I order from Walmart while I spend 100% of my time shopping online? Do they really think this meta-Walmart is so goshdamn engaging that I'd rather have a digital assistant log into my fridge to tell me about my milk situation when I could just pause the program and stretch my legs for a minute by going to check? I've heard of a solution in search of a problem before, but this is a new one on me: a non-solution in search of a non-problem.

That sounds like a hilarious dark comedy. Like, a group of people accidentally killed a man. I would love to have a happy medium between irl Walmart and metaverse Walmart (I want to be alone in a Walmart with a self checkout)
@RileyKohler2 жыл бұрын
Oh man that first VR thing was so rage-inducing, because I know how much technology like that COULD help disabled people, and instead they do it in the shittiest way possible to try and squeeze every penny they can out of people without putting in real effort. I can’t grocery shop on my own because of my disabilities. I can’t drive a car, pushing a cart in a manual wheelchair is impossible and I can’t reach most of the shelves, and I have memory issues and constantly second-guess if I do or do not have something at home even if I make a list. And because I’m heavily immunocompromised in a pandemic, and everyone’s decided they’re fed up wearing masks, I’m back to being stuck at home all the time for my own safety. I really wish I could just go shopping at walmart like the average consumer!! The idea of pushing around a cart and browsing aisles and putting things in the cart and checking out looks FUN to someone who can’t do it!! Having a shopping-at-home experience where it doesn’t matter if I can’t drive or walk or remember what’s in my fridge, and I still get the sensory experience you don’t get just ordering online, would be awesome! …If they’d actually put thought and care into any step of the process. Instead of disabled adults getting a fun VR world to independently complete basic tasks in the safety of our homes, we get “verch” for “young shoppers” in roblox :’)
@ayellowpapercrown67502 жыл бұрын
THIS! You put everything I felt watching that demo into words! I’m VI, I can’t drive either, looking for products is a nightmare, reading prices or nutrition labels is a fight, weighing my produce is awful, self-checkout machines are unusable and the etiquette for the queues are such a drag when you can’t see other people! A VR shopping experience has the potential to be so fun and helpful but NO, let’s pour millions into making straight-to-memr nightmare fuel instead! Ew!
@justkittensbeingkittens58922 жыл бұрын
Covid is completely over, who needs masks??? /s Fr though, I’m sorry you can’t get that experience. I love going to pet stores with my service doggo and letting her pick stuff out. I always let her get a treat no matter what I’m there for lol. I hope you can get treatments that are effective in the future or companies actually care about disabled people when it’s not legally required(tbh I think they’d cure cancer first)

@@justkittensbeingkittens5892 oh man I’m empathizing so hard with you!! Yeah, shopping while disabled is such an ordeal lol. Hopefully we make some real progress as a society soon and it gets easier for us all!

As a teenager who’s been playing Roblox since I was 10. This is absurd. Like the way they’re adding toys and trying to get children to join Roblox, like that would’ve been fine in 2016 but now I can’t even disclose my age on Roblox without some dude telling me to lose my virginity and then kill myself. Roblox shouldn’t be for kids anymore and quite honestly I probably should stop playing it myself.

Unironically, I would love a vr game that’s feels like shopping in a Walmart. But not like this. I’d like it to just be a replica and you can go through the store and see virtual people and spend not real money to “buy” things. You’re not actually buying things, it’s just a simulation game. I enjoy digging through the 5 dollar dvd bins. But the thing is, it would just be a game, and not an actual replacement. I still like going to the actual store. Being able to hear the sounds, feel the items, smell the Walmart smell. Maybe taste the food they sell in those hot shelf things. I don’t want a shopping replacement, I want a shopping simulator. Maybe a Black Friday event, and you can punch someone over a coffee maker! I think that would be much more fun, and you won’t get in trouble with cops . Maybe multiplayer so you can play with friends. But that’s just my thoughts.

What you said about saying no even if you need help is so true. My district manager came to my job today and we had to greet each customer (i do that anyways ya know saying “hi” “good morning” “good afternoon” etc) and we had to walk up to each one and ask them if they needed help. Idk about anyone else but based on my experience in retail most people want to be left tf alone. If they really really need help they’ll ask other than that I personally like to let the customers shop in peace. If I see them struggling of course I will offer help but if not why bother them? Personally I hate when people are all up on me while I’m shopping for anything. My anxiety is bad enough. The less people that bother me the better.

lol I completely agree. I know its not the employees fault, they're just doing their jobs, but its so annoying when im shopping and the employees are like "HI GIRLIE YOUR OUTFIT ISS SO CUTE DO YOU NEED ANY HELP" I always say no but then they're on me again in like 5 min

Ikr?!? And Walmart specifically emphasizes aggressively greeting people like that in order to make potential shoplifters nervous. Regular customers are just trying to stay out of the way and feeling self-conscious about maybe possibly looking suspicious, and we're being told to bug everyone on purpose T_T
