Pro tip: when rasping the opening in the spider, put a washer loosely between the rasp and the chuck of the drill and keep the washer flush against the spider to help cut away at it evenly.

What does the washer do? Suppose to watch where it is depth wise on the ridges?

I recently came acrossed a really good deal on some crossfire xsv4 15s but only have 3 of them and was wanting to do what you did here. Question I have is I wanna make them into 21s. Do you think that the motors would have enough ass for 21s. Will be ran in a 6th order as well. Thanks

I've run into that with those too. Sometimes you have to drill the heads out to get the basket off then put pliers on the shaft and take it out. I hate doing that.

you used spacers on this, so before setting up the coil do you add whatever the measurement of the spacer to the top plate measurements for example top plate is 1/2" and spacer 1/2" so now the top of the plate will be 1"?

With those skills can you re-work the Rockville K-9 Subs (either revision) and make them durable? A kinda video on what the manufacturer should have done and what you did to correct the issue.

It's simply not worth rebuilding one of those from a cost analysis standpoint. There is one thing I don't do is do other companies R&D work, which is what I'd be doing if I pointed out what's wrong with it in detail and said how to fix it. If they paid me to re-engineer it I would.

I hate using phillips screws too. I replace them with allen heads. I noticed you stuck phillips screws right back in it though.

I reused them so I didn't have to get a bunch of bolts I'd probably never use again. I had shorter and longer and it costs more to buy fewer than more of them. Quite often when they're phillips they're not metric either, so I'd definitely never have a use for them.

No loctite or glue over the screws? I just tore down hifonics 400wrms 12. It had its coil broken away and screws loose. Luckly the basket is glued down.

If you torque them properly you don't need it. I torque them properly.

the music at 29: 54 is really cool. it's the traveler of the song I think it's called echoes. just put that on my Spotify playlist. also one thing I notice about your subwoofer builds is that I don't hear any kind of like mechanical noise and I'm not talking about just bad installation but the subs at you build are really clean I mean I don't hear that much Distortion at all even when you're free airing it really cool man good job!

looked like that little gap on the surround worked out to be beneficial. turned out perfectly uniform, maybe that could prevent the creasing you see at max excursion on some surrounds?

The spiders max out before the surround does, so no issue either way.

This might be a stupid question but I only ask as I am rebuilding some subs for my self for first time..what kinda glues and adhesive do you use and or recommend..do you use the same adhesive for the spider landing and for the top or do you use 2 different kinds..I no all builders have there own way of building..again just curious as I am taking any info I can soni don't make a mistake.. Great video. Just have a question regarding the spacing. I know subs have screens in place to ensure debris doesn’t get into the coil area. Should you not have added one?

Do you mean on the basket or on the pole? In the case of the pole that effects cooling, in the case of the basket I'd say a strong number of subs don't have that mesh. Depending on the fluid dynamics of cooling, the mesh could reduce it by up to 50% and even aside from that, it's not a common problem to have something large going there. It doesn't keep dust out, the holes are quite large so it's more than particles coming through. It has to be something bigger than would be in an enclosure.

Why 18's receive the same magnet as a 12" or 15" within the same lineup? More control of the cone area would be needed therefore needing a bigger magnet right? I dont doubt them I simply wonder why. EMF, Sundown, Skar all do this.

A bigger size doesn't mean less control. Control are aspects of electrical (coil and motor interaction) and suspension (spiders and surround compliance). Some might argue that the larger cone has more mass and more mass is harder to control but Sundown 10's for example can have more moving mass than an 18" cone on another brand or series. The simple answer is, there isn't a need for a different motor in most cases. If the motor is barely sufficient for a 10 or 12 then going larger might suck, or if it's ridiculous on an 18" it would be too much for a 10 or 12.

@@bobdodge3171 yeah, it would take 6 days because without accelerator you'd have to wait 24 hours for every joint to dry. Put a bead down, wait 24 hours, put a bead down, wait 24 hours. Accelerator makes it dry enough to keep working, not 100% strength instantly. It takes 8 hrs to bond 100% strength with accelerator. Now you're putting stipulations on it like below optimal temperature, what about humidity? Nearly everyone is building in a controlled environment or at least not trying to build stuff near freezing. I've built subs and put 30,000 watts on them 12 hrs later without failure so I feel pretty confident strength isn't an issue.

Don't heat the screw.....duh, heat will make it swell.

So why did it work then? It's a mechanics trick. Making it swell breaks the chemical bond that's happened on the threads. You also don't heat it up then immediately try to remove it because the material could be weakened. You wait till it cools back down.
