Mother May I Sleep With Danger is a lifetime movie that has lived rent free in my brain for ten years, specifically the final scene where the protagonist basically screams "why are you doing this" to her boyfriend as he tries to kill her and he yells "because I'm a foster child!"

I actually love the ending of Killing Daddy, though, where she realizes that she's "crazy" and she's relieved, like it finally explains everything, and she's perfectly happy to go back to the asylum. It's such a weird anti-climax for a movie like that. They tried to do a version of the same thing for Killing Mommy, but I guess they couldn't figure out a way for it to make sense in that one. Killing Mommy has more going on, but the lead actress isn't as much fun as Liz Gillies. Also, Declan Coyne from Degrassi was in a high school werewolf romance movie that came out the same year the Teen Wolf show started, Howling Reborn. It's terrible, and not the fun kind of terrible, but that's a weird intersection of interests.

Another great set of Lifetime reviews! You're definitely right about Killing Daddy and Double Daddy's problematic aspects. Looking back, I'd say people were just so jazzed at seeing Jade West in a Lifetime movie, they didn't pay attention to what the movie had to say about mental health. I do have to say, though, the mute and bedbound dad character's situation was something that I can look back on and say is genuinely terrifying, even if the movie doesn't focus on it all that much. He knows from the start that his daughter's going to kill him, but because of his condition, there's nothing he can do about it. As for Her Deadly Sugar Daddy, some additional annoying things I found: 1. In addition to Bridget's daft career moves and general idiocy, she's also pretty mean towards her perfectly decent ex-boyfriend, whom she broke up with for reasons that made no sense and who she keeps rudely dismissing when he tries to show her that her "sugar daddy" is bad news. 2. The way the mom reacted to finding out about her daughter's new job felt less like concern and more like slut-shaming. Finally, if I may defend my guilty pleasure, I feel like Lifetime HAS started getting better when it comes to its depiction of mental health. I think they've eased up on dropping actual diagnoses on their villains and they've even started having protagonists (i.e. characters we're meant to root for and sympathize with) grapple with mental health issues.

I'm really glad I found this video. Lifetime is basically all my mom watches (outside of whatever my sister recommends on Netflix), and I specifically remember coming across Double Daddy one day and ended up watching it. It's so unhinged! Conner's assault basically goes unacknowledged, Heather and Amanda being polar opposites of what teenage girls are to boomers, negative depiction of the lower-class, pro-life sentiments galore, high school drama, etc. It's everything a Lifetime movie could be.

Bipolar guy here, Lifetime is just another group with a deep fear and misunderstanding of us. Like, I'm on meds for it and it does me great. Yes, I can be snippy and defensive, yes I can get heated quickly and say dumb things, yes, I can even break things. But... like... I'm not a heartless monster. My mom and several of my friends have bipolar as well and, though it certainly has negative consequences and is more disruptive / harmful on a case by case basis, we're normal people with a flaw that meds and therapy can correct

omfg im the same way when it comes to depictions of teen pregnancy in media...like they never even CONSIDER having an abortion most of the time its just like assumed they're going to keep it. i actually liked how euphoria dealt with cassie getting pregnant - she talked about her options and decided she wanted an abortion, and they didnt sugarcoat how scary it can be while also showing that it was probably the right choice for her.
@crab2195
@crab2195 Жыл бұрын
i was looking for this comment! i completely agree! i saw a lot of people complain about how cassie’s abortion storyline was never brought up again… this may be an unpopular opinion but why should it? she moved on with her life. the abortion was the resolution to that storyline, there’s no need to drag out a melodramatic plot showing how depressed cassie is when that makes absolutely no sense for her character and where she’s at in life. as someone who’s had to make this decision, it’s the most accurate depiction of abortion i’ve seen yet. there’s plenty of things sam levinson has done wrong but the way he handled cassie’s abortion was one thing he did right imo.

I almost think that the "barge in and demand a meeting with the boss after being rejected" trope, especially when it's for an online job or one with a mostly online application procedure, is some kind of last fist-shake from boomer script-writers to the darn kids who won't get out and pound the pavement to find a job anymore. Like if they show it happening this way in movies, it'll all start to make sense to us and we'll stop whining and become financially secure already. Then we just sit back and laugh because those scenes would get you dragged out by security while multiple people film the whole thing for Karen Meltdown content.

I very much appreciate you calling out how mental illness (and apparently, psychiatric care as well) is so badly depicted in these movies. The interesting thing is that when a girl gets pregnant, sometimes people (on either side of the aisle) will tell the girl that she was just trying to trap the guy or that the guy "couldn't" be the father. That point about abortion is something I've been saying for years. I am 24 now but as a teen, I still could not comprehend why abortion was treated as an option in most platforms. I'm so glad that Degrassi has been presenting it as an option since the 80s. Its such a breath of fresh air.
@FrenkTheJoy
@FrenkTheJoy Жыл бұрын
Two main reasons - 1 is that it's so taboo and people will complain about it so they often just don't even mention it in movies/tv shows, sometimes they don't even say the WORD even if they're alluding to it ("are you gonna get a..."), 2 is that if the characters themselves are like "Why don't you just abort it?" then they have to come up with a reason why some panicky 15 year old would be keeping the baby she doesn't want, and it's much more of a storyline to have someone actually have a baby. So if they just don't bring it up at all, then the writing looks less stupid because they don't have to shoehorn in some "Oh no I can't get an abortion because xyz even though I'm terrified about having a baby."
@sersergv
@sersergv 4 ай бұрын
I got banned from a subreddit because I told a trans man who said repeatedly that he and his husband didn't want kids that he should go abort his accidental pregnancy. Like, dude, you don't want it and if you randomly decide to keep it on impulse your husband will resent you for it forever. Thank you so much for pointing out Connor was SA’d. Double Daddy would have been such a fun movie otherwise, but the way all the characters gaslight him has made it unwatchable. Lifetime is usually somewhat competent when depicting SA when the victim is a girl, like they’re at the very least aware that it’s a horrible thing. It’s so uncomfortable seeing Connor be blamed for something that was out of his control and would probably be really traumatic.

I don't think you were being insensitive about Amanda and her sister, a situation like that happened in my church where my mom offered to care for a girls baby since we lived close by and it would've worked out perfectly. She found a family member though, which makes the most sense, always around each other and all just like in the movie

I LOVE your Lifetime movie videos!! Can't wait for the next one! Hearing your thoughts on the conservative spin on Double Daddy made me wonder what the Lifetime movie message is in all of the Bad Sister, Bad Preacher movies??

Sad you didn't mention the terrible "Money On My Mind " song in Killing Daddy. Great lyrics like; - "She takes a nap in the shade of a money tree" - "Cash in her mind. Fire in her eyes" - "Coming up like a hundred story dreams"

Not surprised to see my girl, Brittany Curran, in a lifetime movie. Interesting difference between this character and Fen, from the Magicians. Just goes to show her range as an actress.

I’ve been binging all your lifetime videos recently and idk if anyone else has noticed this but the financial consultant they credit is the same person everytime (at least for the movies in your videos). I wonder if Noël A. Zanitsch had it in their contract to be credited first or something.

Yeah so Lifetime does get most of the movies from smaller companies. Smaller companies like Asylum who makes mockbuster movies so there's your quality.
