Scott, as a long-time LUMIX shooter I appreciate your new found revelations about the LUMIX brand of cameras. I would correct you on one thing, LUMIX is not new to the video content creation world. It only seems to be new to people leaving Sony and maybe Canon. One of the most popular platforms for 4K video has been LUMIX MFT cameras starting with the GH4 and GH5. LUMIX was the first camera line to do 4K video right but there was always one persistent issue and that was Panasonic’s refusal to move away from contrast-based autofocus and adapt phase detection autofocus instead. They finally fixed that with the introduction of the GH6 II and the S5II. My point is, it’s been a well used and known entity in the video space for years. As someone who stated with the MFT G7 I was beyond ecstatic when they decided to go full-frame. I’ve owned the S5 and now I have the S5II. That said, I bought the camera as a hybrid part of my kit although I don’t really shoot video. I’m a photographer first and foremost. The S5II is my primary camera for portrait, fashion, and event shoots. And it makes for a great baseline in a kit comprising of the Leica M10-R and Nikon Zf. As for the vitriol you seen with other camera brands and their fanboys, you can thank Instagram and KZbin for that nonsense. As a LUMIX shooter I’m glad you don’t see that type of toxic behaviour with LUMIX shooters. Welcome to the family and keep shooting. I only see the LUMIX line of cameras getting better over the next few years. And yes, the Leica partnership helps us as consumers have the best of both worlds. Hence why I have an S5II instead of the Leica SL2-S.

Thats the thing. Lumix people support one another. And the brand actually listens to us to help them improve. Itds almost unheard of. Canon and sony doesn't ant to hear from you once you buy their gear, and the Sony people seem to have a whole different complex all together. They are holding the 2nd spot behind Canon in camera sales, and are still having a GO at Lumix that's at best 5th. Its hilarious

I switched to Lumix over two years ago, and couldn't be happier. I went for MFT instead of full frame but your comments apply to Lumix MFT just as much as Lumix full frame. It cost a little more, but the kit lens I chose was the 12-35mm f2.8 In addition I invested in the 35-100mm f2.8 at the same time. These 2.8 zooms are fabulous lenses and would never become the forgotten lens leftn on the shelf. An added benefit in being in MFT is that I can buy and use Olympus lenses in addition to Lumix, and the quality of Olympus lenses is nothing short of amazing. I also use Sigma, Laowa, and Voigtlander lenses in MFT mount. We are spoiled for choices.

I used Sony A6000 for a long time, but I never liked the camera, it's simply the "best deal" back then for me to start. So I didn't invest much in the ecosystem aside of the kit lens and a 50mm f1.8. The newer body and lens selection from Tamron and Sigma almost keep me with Sony, until I bought LX100ii for a compact everyday camera. And I enjoyed shooting with the LX100ii so much I never looked back. Sold the Sony to fund the Lumix S5 and go all-in with Lumix and L-mount ecosystem now. I rarely shot video, but the photography aspect is perfectly fine in S5, DFD autofocus works pretty well for photos. It was also one of the better deal to go full frame at the moment. Also I loved all the new lens releases, the 100mm macro and 28-200mm is definitely on my shopping list. Moving forward, I'm hoping we can get a continuation of LX100 compact, a more photography focused full frame body and a new smaller MFT rangefinder body.

Exactly. There is no perfect hybrid camera, but the S5II and S5IIx are close in my opinion. Not many compromises. There’s the 4K/50 crop and the rolling shutter in full frame, but one kind of fixes the other anyway if you’re ok with using APSC in those fast panning scenarios. Seem to be quite rare scenarios for me anyway.

My first major video camera was GH5. I loved that camera and was nearly perfect minus the AF. While waiting for GH6 I moved over to the A7iii, then the A7siii, and I purchased the GH6 finally. Sadly, the GH6 just did not have the right colors or felt differnt compared to my GH5. Its all possible that I failed at properly color correcting the picture. As I am told its a wonderful camera by many people. I finally picked up the S5iix last weekend because of an amazing sale. All I can say is it feelds great to be back home! This feels like the true GH5 successor. I enjoy this camera more than my A7siii because the footage is more stabilized and…I can’t truly explain how Panasonic wins over Sony for me at least but my best effort is there imo appears to be more depth to the footage. Those that dabbled with both will understand what I mean. On the near future now that I purchased the S5iix I expect Panasonic to drop the S1Hii next week, and in the long term future I believe BlackMagic is the real future once they introduce and perfect AF. Working and grading BRAW just seems fantastic. I’m looking forward to shooting some BRAW with my S5iix this weekend.

@@Viewtolove - The X-S10. I bought it for potential video applications, but discovered I liked it for stills better. For me the pros are that it has the same sensor and processor as the X-T4, but with the better (a subjective opinion) ergonomics of the small DSLR style body. Speaking of small, the size is important for me to keep weight down as I have a bad back. As a hybrid solution in a small package, it is respectable. The cons are a little less substantial but still worthy of note. It's not weather sealed. Of course I knew this when I bought it, but I would still have preferred it to be weather sealed, even if that meant paying a couple hundred more. Secondly, the battery life is pretty bad. I have three batteries for it and still have to carry an power bank to make sure I don't find myself with a dead camera at the end of a long day of nature photography/video. Some neutral points: the EVF isn't anything special (understandable for the pricepoint). It's not bad, but it is sort of "meh". The camera has just enough buttons for me to customize it's controls the way I want. The menus are good, but not great. I do like the Q menu quite a bit, but it's button placement on the top next to the ISO button is also a bit "meh". Overall I'd give the camera a solid "B" grade. It is above average when you consider all the stuff you get for the price point (far more than I've talked [rambled?] about here) , but it has some small things that keep it from being truly excellent, at least by my estimation.

I bought a G85 years ago (2019 I think) which introduced me to photography. I have dabbed with multiple brands, Sony at first then Nikon but neither stuck with me. On a whim due to recent sales I bought an S5iiX (I’m getting into videography and the extra features were worth it), and just a few weeks in I’m impressed. Like SUPER impressed. Should’ve just stayed in the Lumix ecosystem all these years haha. This camera is amazing and if my business takes off I’ll certainly be buying whatever comes next from them.

Love your laid back delivery. Agree with your sentiments too. Personally, looking forward to Lumix next cam with FF 4k50- it’s part of the missing links, along with the bigger battery of the S1H. At that point, probably the perfect mirrorless camera.

You say you'd like to see more megapixels, and I could agree with that. However, I think the more important feature I'd like at this price point is a higher burst rate. 7 fps on the mechanical shutter (in highest quality mode) is pretty low compared to the competition in this price range (think Canon R6II, Sony A7IV).

You're on point in this👍 I love my GH6 and use it just for a video. I haven't even taken a single photo with it. I'm not into photography at all. V-log was a big surprise to me too. It's so amazing and I love the Lumix colour science. However, I wish that Japanese camera manufacturers would dump those '90s menu systems and those tiny screens for good. They really should take a look at how Blackmagic has done their cameras. I have BMPCC 4K too and for useability it beats Lumix hands down. When I'm shooting with Lumix I must always use an external monitor with it. With that tiny internal screen, I just can't see what is in focus and what is not.

I have a Lumix G9 plus GX80. Also an Olympus E-M1 MkII and smaller E-M10 MkII. The menu system of Panasonic is better laid out but once you get used to any brand, the menu becomes an almost non-issue. The features, controls, comfort and suitability for the occasion become the dominant points. I also have a Sony A7 III which I like just as much for different reasons, such as its low light ability without flash. The variety and thought process of using different equipment keeps my brain cells somewhat more agile than otherwise. All are underused of course, especially in Winter. I sold a three cameras, including a G6, G7 and a Fuji X20 to justify the used G9 and keep my wife happy. I could still do with less cameras of course but as I get older I think… what the heck!

@@ScottEdwards It depends on many things, not least on frequency of use and aim of the collection. It could be that the owner collects cameras and uses them as ornaments or could even be a camera trader. So the number of cameras that makes ‘too many’ must surely vary from person to person. For instance what I consider to be a nice number of cameras is, to my wife, far too many.

I shot Nikon DX for about 10 years along with a Nikon 1 kit as my travel camera for several years before trading in the whole lot for a single Lumix GX85 body and mostly shot with the brilliant Lumix 14-140mm and Oly 17mm f1.8. Looking back GX85 wasn't the right body choice for me (I should have gone with the G85, g95 or G9) but I loved the Lumix way of doing things. I switched over to a G95 in 2021 along the Leica 12-60mm f2.8-4, 9mm and 15mm f1.7 as my main lenses and I'm really happy with the system overall. It's so light and competent for me as a hobbyist travel, family and nature hybrid shooter. I still have my 14-140mm also as a hiking walkabout lens which is great. That said I'm constantly admiring the G9ii and S5ii and the L mount keeps getting more and more compelling. Hard to choose an upgrade path! That said, I really don't need more than I already have, and even though Canon Nikon and Sony are all interesting and great in their own ways and have their own interesting lens ecosystems, if I do jump to FF I'm certain I'll love a Lumix body and the lenses (20-60, 28-200, and 35mm f1.8 look amazing).

Combined with the affordable f/1.8 primes this makes the Panasonic Lumix S5 II (or II X) a great option for wedding photography.

I use both Sony and Lumix, Lumix since 2013 (m43) and Sony since 2018. The S5II is a very good cameras but the last Sony cameras are also great, if their IBIS were as good as Lumix, I think I would almost never use my S5II. A good thing about Sony is to be able to zoom while recording (digital zoom). On Lumix, you can use APS-C or Pixel to Pixel mode but you can't zoom out or zoom in inside your video while recording. Also the standard profiles are better on Sony since the S5II,the S5II has too much processing (heavy NR, details filtering and sharpening). Even V-log is worse than on the first gen S1 and S5. These two cameras have the best image quality I ever seen on cameras below 5000$. On Sony you also have more lenses, some S Pro lenses are really great but there are not that many. On Sony you have a much lighter 70-200mm f2.8, a 50mm f1.2 etc ... These lenses have faster AF than the Lumix one, but it's certainly because the last Sony cameras have really better AF than the S5II. Finally, I don't know if you have ever used the A7CII or the A7RV but both cameras have really great colors, in my opinion they are nicer than on the S5II. The GH6 remains my favorite for colors though, very cinematic. Of course the S5II has a lot of nice features too, it has the best FF IBIS, 6K Open Gate (not as good as the S1 and S1H though), real time Lut and better build quality in my opinion. For me, Sony just need better IBIS and Lumix need to get back the same image quality than on the first Gen S5 and S1.

I was a GH4 user for years and loved many things about it particularly the in body time-lapse and stabilisation on the lenses. But the contrast detect auto focus drove me bonkers and it's really the one thing that drove me to Sony. The IBIS on the FX30 is not as good as the Panasonics but it's ok and the time-lapse on the FX30 is really a cludge in comparison. But I know it will nail focus and when self filming that is super important. I still have a soft spot for Panasonic but unlike a lot of you content creators I can't afford to switch ecosystems with the seasons😂 when the latest and greatest gear is released.
