Could Marion Jones win without performance enhancing drugs in the early 2000s? After denying doping, she was erased from the record books and stripped of all her medals from 2000-2001, including the record 5 she achieved in Sydney. Her 8 relay teammates in that span were also stripped of their medals because of her infractions. She was on pace to becoming one of the most dominant athletes of her time regardless of gender before being caught, and denouncing any athlete taking enhancement drugs beforehand, all to be found guilty later herself. Here’s how Marion Jones went from the top of sports to disgraced athlete, to brighter days. She's seen her share of success in both basketball and Track and field, dominating in both on her way to becoming the ideal athlete. She's also seen her share of hurdles mainly for lying to federal agents about using PEDs and her involvement in the BALCO scandal. She was sentenced to 6 months in prison and did her time head held high. She's now out and rebuilding her legacy one stride at a time. What would she have been as a natural athlete? "I Would Have Won Without Drugs": Marion Jones | Stunted Growth Story

If you look at videos of JC Hooker and Marion together you don't see the genuine affection of a married couple. When you see Flo Jo and Al Joyner together you can see the excitement they feel in each others presence: it is obvious either one of them would have gone to the floor for the other.

My dad and I LOVED her, watched all her races, and considered her a darling of the T&F sport. To say that the enormity of the hurt when she was caught cheating was a lot, is an understatement. I think she chose the wrong company from the start, poor choices (husbands), who both just shackled her to a ball and chain and tossed her overboard. It was devastating to watch the downfall, it made my dad and I basically lose faith in humanity. For what it is worth, I am so glad that she is giving back in the small things she is doing, especially in shaping young minds and showing the consequences of bad choices. Keep running Marion, it is just a different race now. We are still rooting for you.

Her supposed giving back is to avoid the IAAF taking legal action for the return of $ 700 000 of IAAF prize money she obtained by cheating. She has to take the stance she does to avoid them demanding their prize money back with interest. Even if their case was weak they could win by greater financial weight alone. As to her husbands tossing her overboard, they knew she wouldn't hesitate to condemn them if she thought she could get away with it. There is no reason to believe she wasn't doping from the age of 12 onwards. For example she needed Jonnie Cochrane at 16 to get her out of a 4 year IAAF ban, the same year she met JC Hooker. She also avoided the chance of an Olympic medal as a race relay reserve, she could have gotten an Olympic medal without even having to run.

@@severtone263 For sure her admitted downfall and imprisonment is an important reminder to those contemplating doping. The US laws against doping have recently being toughened, allowing the application of 10 year prison sentences, with Blessing, a Nigerian living in the US, being likely to be made an example of. Are you aware Marion Jones was convicted for her part in a $ 5 million cheque fraud for which she should have received a 10 year sentence. The FBI maintained their authority by ensuring she got a 6 month sentence for cheek : lying to the FBI. If you listen to end of her supposed confession of doping, after multiple references to her family being mad at her, at the end she makes a confession of being dishonest, in other words it is a public statement that she took part in the cheque fraud she had been convicted of, at no point does she admit to doping despite being convicted in open court of being a doper. The US Government true attitude towards Marion Jones was given away by the fact the first month of her 6 month sentence was spent in solitary. Another reason why I find Marion Jones objectionable is the way her obvious doping when competing against a field of clean athletes spread doping. The 2000 Sidney Olympics 100 meters race, with the exception of Marion Jones, was clean. See the video MARION JONES Z SCORE for details. The W-distribution, a modification of the normal distribution for small sample sizes should have been used, and MJ should not have been considered part of the sample, the race pack. Even so she is shown to be statistically significantly different from the pack. In the 2001 World Championship 100 meters race Marion Jones was beaten. The manner of her defeat demonstrated she is not a true elite athlete. She lacked the ability to maintain her form under race pressure despite not suffering pain. Pintusevich demonstrated her true elite status by maintaining perfect form despite reaching the pain barrier and collapsing afterwards. The mark of a true elite athlete is the ability to make a 0.5 % advantage definitive.

Whether Lance and Marion did or didn't need performance enhancing drugs would have depended on their ultimate goals. Lance wanted to win the Tour de France multiple times. Marion wanted to win multiple gold medals at the olympics and world championships. So in their cases, they actually DID need performance enhancing drugs to win at the highest levels of their sport. If both athletes competed at a much lower level, sure, they didn't need drugs. But to be the best of the best in the world in sports, they definitely needed them.

She's far worse. The opposition didn't cheat. View the video Marion Jones Z score and you will realise all the 100 meter opposition ran clean. Why ? Because 10 years before the East German were exposed and the consequences of steroid doping were exposed: females turning into males, heart problems, organ damage, fertility and child damage, with a long term kicker: severe osteoporosis so bad the spinal column collapses causing intense agony. All the opposition knew she was using, how ? When you inject steroids your hormone levels are destabilised causing steroid rages she couldn't hide. Additionally she proved she would be nothing without drugs, how ? In the 2001 World Championships when she was under pressure in the 100 meters by Pintusevich, her form collapsed. To win clean you have to make a margin of 0.5 % or less count. In other comments I have remarked I believe she corrupted Thanou by depriving her of the Gold Medal she had fought 10 years for. Remember in 2004 no prospect existed Jones could be exposed and Thanou would have felt enraged at this.

More like a quest for $. Basketball would have paid well, especially with advertising $, but athletics focuses on the individual giving greater opportunity for $. Given her size relative to her high school competition, and the Olympics, her documented years of systematic cheating, and meeting JC Hooker at 16, the possibility arises she was abusing HGH Human Growth Hormone from 16 onwards. She planned to get 5 Gold medals to maximise her advertising revenue.

I ran the 1500 in high school and college and often wondered how she competed at a high level in the 100, 200, and 400 meter individual races. Not to mention the relays. I certainly don't want to defend using PED's. However, I do want to correct you on something. Using PED's doesn't allow you to skip the hard work. The advantage come from the exact opposite. PED's allow athletes to work out harder and longer than clean athletes can. It's sad that so many athletes choose to go this route since they actually are willing to put in the work. I think some start using because they are told they have to because "everybody else is taking them".

With PEDS its easy because its as if you never even worked out the day before so you can do another hard workout the next day.

As a 10 year old girl who loved sports and had natural sprinting ability, I looked up to Marion so much. I remember watching the 2000 Olympics and screaming with joy after seeing her races. In my community there wasn't anybody I could look at as a little black girl who was running track (or doing any sport) that I could see the possibilities for myself in. I distinctionly remember admiring everything about her and wanting be just like her "when I grow up". I remember being devastated when this all came out. I think I even cried. Although interestingly even at that age I never felt judgement towards her. Just sadness. As an adult, I now have the words to explain those feelings. She made a mistake, like we all. However, in my opinion she did not deserve the public shaming directed towards her. I hope she has found happiness since and learned to forgive herself.
@michaeledwards2251

She deserved everything she got. Her so called confession including the statement she was retiring from athletics because of her actions. The reason ? The IAAF required her to return the $ 700 000 in prize money she got by cheating. The only sanction, she would not be allowed to compete in IAAF events until it was returned. She cheated honest athletes of $ 700 000. Additionally she had been paid over $ 3 million in sponsorship money. She had a $ 2.5 million house and other assets. It is scarcely credible she was reduced to a few thousand $ in her bank account after been caught. Remember this is not a matter of a simple mistake made impulsively but a plan systematically executed over several years. Additionally she met JC Hooker when she was 16. If you see how big she is in relation to her opposition, height and width, as a high school student and how big she was in the Olympics, the questions arises, was she using Human Growth Hormone from the age of 16 to increase her adult height and strength ? Her opposition ran clean Why Because the East German athletes had been exposed and the consequences of their drug usage shown Females turning into males, Heart problems, Organ damage, Fertility loss, Children suffering damage as well, and a long term kicker: severe osteoporosis causing spinal collapse causing intense agony. The above is only a sample of the bad side effects which induced any sensible athlete to run clean. If you want to find confirmation the opposition ran clean see the video Marion Jones Z score. If you ignore Marion Jones, Thanou who should have won, and the last runner, there is a pack of 5 with a mean of 11.2 seconds and a standard deviation of about 20 milliseconds. The probability of Thanou time, less than !% faster than the pack mean, in a race of 8 is 40%. The probability of Marion Jones time, 10.75, if she followed the pack distribution is less than 1 in billion. (Remember to use the W distribution as a pack of 5 is below the size where the Normal distribution is an appropriate approximation. )

That was interesting take on Ms. Jones. Particularly the part about narcissism. I never thought of that probably because I always associated narcissism with being evil something that I never attributed to Ms. Jones. Just thought she got caught up. To be honest though I hadn't heard all those comments she made were she shamed other athletes for using PED's which is crazy since she did that while being on PED's herself. Her husbands did her dirty but she was still an adult who made an adult decision to do wrong. It's cool that she bounced back though and is doing well now.

Yeah, that makes sense. I’ve also associated narcissism with something evil and bad. But I was reading an article a few years back, and the U.K. did a study and said that doctors - more specifically, surgeons - tend to exude narcissistic, Machiavellianism and psychopathy traits. So maybe in a way, narcissism can be a relatively good trait, if applied correctly. I’m not sure. But I found that study to be intriguing.

@@sabrina.natalie Yeah I could see that. Not sure if you're into Marvel movies but the film Dr. Strange basically personified that idea in the beginning. I'm thinking that in order to do that kind of work where you routinely have another human being's life in your hands has to on some level lead to some degree of arrogance because if a person in that situation doubted themselves then disastrous things would happen. That does sound like something I would want to read as well.

It s easy to bounce back if you return the $ 700 000 in IAAF prize money obtained by cheating. The only sanction ? She can't compete in IAAF events until she returns the $. To me her drive was maximum $. Why would a narcissistic turn down the opportunity of going to the Olympics as a teenager and obtain an Olympic medal without even having to run for it. (She would have been part of an alternative team. ) The way she keeps denying drug usage after being convicted of it raises the question how far back did usage go ? Given a test kit got lost at 17 and she needed Jonnie Cochrane to defend her, the question arises, was she using from the age of 12. It sounds incredible yet would explain how she was able to duck a basket ball at school when taller boys were unable to do so. Her school wins look eerily similar to her Olympic wins. When she was forced to maintain form under pressure, the sign of a true elite, during the 2001 World Athletics Championship 100 meters, her form fell apart. She wasn't even in pain, watch how she showed no sign of exhaustion afterwards.

what about the other athletes that was stolen a medal due to her taking drugs. if she nows says she would have won even if she didnt take any. why did she take drugs in the first place? Well.. Im glad she admitted her faults and hopefully can teach next generation athletes what not to do .

The woman is certainly guilty of having bad taste in men. She found one loser after another who first encouraged her to use and then betrayed her. Still, she made those choices and paid the price.

CJ "Grimace" Hunter messed up his wife but she is also culpable in going along with it. Likely did not even need it. She can certainly pick the husbands, two snitches.

Remember she met CJ Hunter at 16 and had a missed drug test needing Jonnie Cochrane to get her out of a 4 year IAAF ban. She also missed the opportunity of an Olympic medal as a relay race reserve as a teenager. Given her years of drug abuse needing dope sheets to keep track of it all, she was likely using from the age of 16. If she was a user it would explain why she missed the opportunity of an Olympic medal at high school The problem with picking a drug cheat is that they are inherently a cheat and you shouldn't be surprised if they snitch. If she was user from 16 she would have had no choice but to have men who agreed with her choice. If you view the CIF videos of her as a high school student, it is notable she won by the same kind of massive margins she had in the Olympics. I have also noted comments by other YT users who claim to have been in her school she could duck a basket when taller boys couldn't. This raises the question, was she a user from the age of 12 ?

I always suspected Lance Armstrong, but Marion broke my heart. She was a Goddess, but her blind ambition overtook her. Testimony to her strength is her humility and willingness to share her personal story. She doesn't owe anybody anything but is making the most of it!

I noted Victor Conte said he knew it was going to come out when he saw Marion Jones doping openly, yet he acted as if he was surprised by the FBI raid. The FBI found files full of athletes, 84 in base ball alone. The question is, how many acted as soon as JC Hunter got the positive drug tests and bribed Victor Conte to destroy their records.
