Dear Andrew and Dave, I am turning to you again for help and advice. This isn't about the IO, but the higher level essay. One of my students is in a quandary. He has chosen to write his essay on a collection of speeches of Simon Sinek. But lately, he realised that speeches can be considered as literary texts (non- fiction), and the 6 literature works the school has prescribed don't include speeches. It's rather late in the day for him to go back to the drawing board and start again with a new text/work. Would Sinek's published speeches pass as non-literature? Would he be penalized for this? I'm not sure myself, so I would really value your opinion. Much appreciated. Peter

Hi Peter. I love Simon Sinek speeches and that sounds like an interesting HL Essay topic. To my knowledge, speeches are non-literary unless the speaker is on the PRL like Martin Luther King Jur. For Sinek, his speeches are non-literary. For lang lit students, they are free to choose either literary or non-literary texts for their HL Essay so this student should be fine either way! However, the rules are that the text/author must be one that is taught in class at some point. Were Sinek speeches used in this student’s course? If so, I think this is perfectly fine. If not, he needs to choose a text that is studied. I hope this clarifies.

Hello - you guys are really the best. I have watched your videos many times to help me understand what my daughter is working through in her IB Lit class! My question is - many of the videos you create are focused on Lang/Lit but my daughter is doing the HL Literature class only (so no lang). Are there any specific tips for HL Lit you could do a video on?

Hey IB English Guys, first of all, I love all your content and it is truly helping me a lot second I really wanted to see what you think of my Mock IO topic ( I am not in lang lit so one non-lit extract and lit extract for my case), for my IO I have chosen 1984 by George Orwell and only the first few pages of the book and for my non-lit extract, I have chosen Basquiat's painting titled "The Irony of a Negro Policeman" after following your guides to pin point all the ideal topics that correlate in the extracts, I have concluded on the Global Issue which is "The Manipulation of Media and Propaganda for Political Gain", I just wanted to know your thoughts on this particular Global Issue, thank you in advance it would mean a lot for me.
