you guys are really amazing, stuff just makes sense when you guys explain it. Would you guys be able to do a video on how to annotate effectively in a paper 1 - like what to think and write down during the annotation time, how much we need annotate etc. Thank you again, ur videos are a blessing !!!

This is a great suggestion for a video. We are releasing some poetry videos this week where we teach how to annotate. Please let us know if those are helpful and we will try to follow the same annotating style/format for the non-literary texts as well. We're so glad you like the channel!

Dear English Guys. Thank you so much for these fantastic videos. As a teacher who is fairly new to the IB A it helps me enormously. I am emailing you all the way from the Netherlands btw. A question for a paper 1 we had to analyse a Christmas Speech given by our King. The transcript came from the Dutch official royal website. Do you in this case say the audience is those who have gone specifically to the Royal Website to read the transcript, or the people who watch the actual speech on Christmas day? Sorry very specific case I suppose. I have gone for mentioning both audiences. The one obviously (even) more royalist than the other. Thanks for your trouble and your fantastic explanations. Monique
@ibenglishguys
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
Super great question, Monique. I like to think about multiple audiences for any text. An audience watching the speech live is the primary audience but the secondary (and much larger) audience is indeed ANYONE who reads the speech on a website or in a published book. Sometimes we can look at historical speeches NOW and we are in a different time period looking at the speech with a totally different lens. Looking at these multiple audiences can be very rich. While this new course does not emphasize audience, it is always a good idea in my opinion.

Hi Dave and Andrew, I would like to know what is the difference between a textual reference and the feature as they sound very similar. Also, what are some examples of textual references in a more "language-based" text?
@ibenglishguys
@ibenglishguys 2 жыл бұрын
A textual reference is a direct quotation from a text or a specific part of the text (a detail from an image for example). A FEATURE is a technique that the author uses. For example it might be an allusion or it might be the use of color. The features are the tools that authors use. We need to find references, label the feature used and analyze the specific effect of the feature.

Hi, this was a very insightful video. Thank you! However, I'm left with some confusion regarding how to approach writing the rest of the body paragraphs. Do we add further points to the Graphic Organiser or do we simply build on the points already mentioned. Is there any video where you covered further please? Hope to see your reply. Thanks again! :)

Look at the guiding question and consider other features and other rich ideas that help to answer this question. This would make up subsequent paragraph topics. Hope this helps. This video gives you the essential components of a paragraph, not the entire response. We have many complete papers on our countdown to Paper 1 series.

Do we need to mention in the introduction which features we will be analyzing, or is that not necessary?
@ibenglishguys
@ibenglishguys 2 жыл бұрын
For the Paper 1, you’ll have a guiding question that asks about a technical or linguistic aspect. It’s a good idea to incorporate this aspect into your thesis and use this to “guide” your entire response. I would not list other features in the introduction and instead focus on the argument or claim of the text and link in the technical aspect that is in the guiding question. Hope that helps.

I have a question about the use of colour. Here you say the colour yellow my connote hope for a better future, but when the women put on the blouse she surely didnt have that intention, since the image is presumably unedited how can yellow be seen a symbolsim that the creator of this image has tried to convey to the reader. I may be wrong but im geniouly curious if there is a line to how far we analyse. For example I could say the green on a tree symbolises something, but the tree has always been green. This video has been super helpful!!
@ibenglishguys
@ibenglishguys 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Banana, thanks for the insightful question. In this particular UNHCR piece, we feel that the organization has made deliberate choices to enhance the persuasive elements of the image. In other UNHCR pieces of media, many of their images seemed to have been "staged" rather than being "real" images that were taken by photographers/photojournalists. Accordingly, we believe the yellow of the shirt was an intentional "choice" by the creator to shape meaning. This choice influences the gaze of the viewer, as the yellow shirt stands out from the other more drab coloring of the image. However, please note that David wrote "...the color yellow might connote hope..." I like the use of the word "might" here. As you say, sometimes the tree is just green :). The word "might" seems to take care of that dilemma in this situation while still showing good insight. Glad the videos are helping, and thanks for the engagement!

I had a question, this would be 1 paragraph in the essay correct? And you would want to have around 3 body paragraphs? How can you make sure you don't repeat yourself and that each paragraph is original? And would you repeat the gray parts that are your topic sentences in each paragraph? (sorry for so many questions)
@ibenglishguys
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
A strong Paper 1 response needs AT LEAST three body paragraphs and even more if you can manage. Every paragraph should address the guiding question in some fashion AND link back to the rich idea of our thesis.(Often the message/claim of the text). You will repeat yourself and that is OK. Stay on point and try to think of other ways to word the thesis if you can.

Just a question for advertisements or any paper 1 text actually, if the date is not explicitly mentioned how do i give context, or will IB always give text that has dates ?
@ibenglishguys
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
We are not meant to write much about context on Paper 1. Definitely avoid writing entire paragraphs on context, as that will not be rewarded. However, sometimes having some contextual knowledge does help on Paper 1. After all, time and space is one of our areas of exploration. For Paper 1, the texts should not be dependent on context. If context is important for a future assessment, we'd expect IB to add this information as a footnote as they have done in past exam sessions.

Couldn't the thesis have mentioned the actual visual elements you plan to look at?
@ibenglishguys

We’re not big fans of listing elements in a thesis statement. Leave that for the paper. Focus on an argument and the formal aspect in the guiding question.

Sorry about the poor organization on KZbin. We will launch our website next week where things will be much easier to find and follow. Good luck!
