At the very least adding Ellie helped, Crash and Eddie were annoying upon rewatch and in every sequel since
@DiegoRedeemedLover2 жыл бұрын
@@erichfiedler1481 I so agree about Crash & Eddie. They're "fluff" characters and exist just to fill space, which is frustrating becos there was a tiger cub, Joe Jr, who was originally gonna be the character acting as Ellie's "brother" and I feel like Joe Jr would've been a significant improvement over the possums, because tigers/carnivores like Diego were lacking so much in the series. Like the humans, they seemingly "disappeared" in Meltdown, which is weird and kinda frustrating since when people think of the historical Ice Age they think mammoths and sabre-tooth tigers (cats) and I feel like those species so known for that era just weren't represented enough in the franchise tbh. :(
@angrynoodletwentyfive64632 жыл бұрын
It does kinda suck that it was still in the era where if they did have a female character as part of the main cast it was always as a love interest to one of the males and not as her own character. like even if a female character ends up with one of the male leads at the end that doesn't mean they were written to be a "love interest" if they were not introduced specifically to fall in love with a character. For Example Calhoun falls in love with Felix in wreck-it-Ralph but that is not her main contribution to the plot. Ellie has enough of her own arc that it works ok, but she is still very clearly written to be a love interest for manny rather than her own character, and while there is nothing wrong with that in a vacuum the fact that up until recently it was really the exception to see a female character in a cast that wasn't primarily a love interest is a pretty big problem with kids movies in general. There are definitely some, but it is pretty rare.

One interesting thing about the Ice Age sequels is that they all borrow from a different story. For the Meltdown, it's "Noah's Ark", for Dawn of the Dinosaurs, it's "Journey to the Center of the Earth", for Continental Drift, it's "The Odyssey", and for Collision Course it's "Armageddon"

The animation for the time was pretty damn impressive, not just the textures but the way water was handled in general. Not many animated movies knew how to handle water and try to avoid making their characters interact with it (heck movies kept trying to avoid that years after this movie came out). So the fact that the movie is pretty much entirely focused around large bodies of water is impressive in context

I think the best thing about the film was that the setting of the film reflected Manny's internal struggle at that time, still being unable to let go of his family being murdered, internally being trapped in a bowl with no way out. Introducing Ellie in the story as a side of Manny's personality that he lost when his family was killed is what presents an opportunity for him to get out of his "bowl".

Another thing to give not only this movie, but even the other sequels whatever you think of them, is the music score by John Powell. Even for these movies, the music he writes and orchestrates is pretty top-tier and really puts you in the mood of the scene, whether it’s joyful, comedic, intense, action-packed, etc. He truly is a master of the art.
@hunterolaughlin2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I’m probably going to get a ton of flack for saying this: John Powell’s score, especially his “Mammoths” piece, is SUPERIOR to David Newman’s score and his “Migration” piece. In my opinion, “Mammoths” is the true theme for Ice Age than “Migration” as it really captures the beauty and awesomeness of seeing extinct creatures like mammoths, saber tooth tigers, ground sloths, glyptodons, shovel mouths, macrauchenias, etc. and the world during the Ice Age 2.4 million years ago.
@saviitrius2 жыл бұрын

It's weird how Fox saw these movies with themes of found family, healing from the past and putting aside diferences to survive, and their biggest takeaway was: "Of course, the disaster setpieces, so that's what people like. Let's escalate the danger in the sequels and become the animated equivalent of Michael Bay."
@samueljohn3383 Жыл бұрын
Actually I realized something. In an Ice Age sequel, we watch a family dynamic mixed with a disaster movie trope. Very happy to hear more positivity on the second film! 😊 While the first film is still my personal favorite out of the bunch, I do really like the second one as well and it’s definitely my favorite out of the sequels (I mainly like 1-3). I agree that the animation is much better compared to the first one, which would make sense with it coming out 4 years later and I think the comedy isn’t that bad either. I also liked the drama we had with Ellie’s past even if the drama wasn’t as heavy as the first film and it was done well in my opinion. I do wish the humans from the first film were referenced in the film (and in the later ones) because of the fact that they are never brought up again and I would have liked to have seen the baby grown up in the later movies (perhaps that could have been a conflict to write in if they had a good idea with it).

When it comes to the Ice Age films, I do have a lot of nostalgia. I saw the first one in cinemas when it came out and just happened to be its target demographic. I don't actively return to watch it over and over since I've grown up, but I did enjoy it and I have a brother who was an infant when the first came out. I even remember playing "where's the baby" with him as soon as I got home. It's mindblowing because he is now a military man who now works as a prison guard. Anyway, the second film came out when I was just about to start junior high. I remember enjoying it, but I think it's the one I've seen the least out of the first three. The third, however, introduced the greatest character in the entire franchise and I have seen that one the most entirely because of him. I haven't even seen it in roughly ten years and I could still probably tell you everything that happens just from how many times I watched that one. Unfortunately, the fourth one disappointed me and I haven't even attempted to see the fifth because I just lost interest.

In Hungary the dub uses the word "flesh" instead of "food" and the whole record picks up the accurate terminology of a butcher's shop, even the little vulture uses those words like he was chopping the pieces up for a kitchen order. I guess the original had a darkish humorous tone but the hungarian one was dead on dark making it a hilarious scene that is quoted to this very day when something meat related comes up.

The same thing happened to me. I was glad back then to find out there were 3 movies, not two.

Is it weird that this is making me wanting to rewatch Ice Age?

Idk if I'm the only reason one but these movies are so much better in latino spanish, the voice cast fits so much more, like that scene where manfred thinks he hears another mammoth and starts running with zid on top then the tiger is trying to catch up and zid looks at him and starts chanting like he was an announcer from a horse betting race, just kills me everytime I see it xD BUT again, in spanish.

The vultures and small jokes really made this movie memorable as a kid. I remember the joke with the dodo bird sticking out for me

I’m excited for you to see the third one! Not that any of these movies are on my favorite movies list, but out of all the Ice Age movies, the dawn of the dinosaurs was the one I liked the best. It’s also the one my siblings always turned on when they wanted to watch Ice Age. The other ones were always weird or cheesy, but the dinosaur one is more funny and adventurous.

Kinda hate that they never went back to the baby, one of the sequels could've been about the baby as an adult with his own family as he meets Manny with his.

I’ll always have a soft spot for the first three movies, even the fourth movie had funny moments. The fifth one is better off forgotten

I can't wait to see him review the rest of the sequels 😊

The fourth one has a villain played by Peter Dinklage. I haven't seen the fourth one before. From what I heard he's a little funny. And also you're going to love the 5th one Doug. You'll love it like a Godfather II. Edit: There are no more humans in the rest of the sequels making the first one feel pointless!

The thing I was impressed by with this film was the HUGE upgrade in tech the fur got - just compare scenes in this movie with scenes from the first movie There's no comparison It's like they got an artist who'd actually seen HAIR before xD

Why do so many talking animal films from the 2000s have characters becoming Fire Gods? Sid in this, Melman in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa AND Eddie Izzard in The Wild. And even more bafflingly, none of them are bad!

This was probably the one of the franchise that I watched the most. Though I actually kind of prefer the first one because of the dramatic moments I laughed once in the third movie, was roaring with laughter in the fourth but I can't say it's good. I couldn't bring myself to see any of the movies after that. I swear, I saw the commercial of Scrat on a spaceship, threw up my hands and said "I'm done"
