I have a question they sell 2 one is PCB mounted and one is plate mounted what is the difference when I order PCB mounted ?
@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
The difference is how the stabilizers are mounted onto the keyboard. Plate mount means that the stabilizer is mounted to the frame of the keyboard, whereas PCB mount is where the stabilizers are screwed directly onto the PCB. Generally speaking PCB mount is preferred as there are more options for customization, and in general they're 'sturdier'. The ID80 I reviewed is plate mount, as at the time that was the only option. The PCB and frame of the case support both styles of stabilizer however.

All my keyboards are hotswappable and at the time it was also a big plus for me. However, I finally had a chance to go with solder board, and all I can say is after trying on the solder board I am never going back to hotswappable. Solder in switches are just better in every way. Less wobble and much much more stable and solid. Only downside is you can't switch it out easily, but it's not that bad to de solder all the switches, esp with a de solder gun. You can de solder 87 switches in 10 mins or less with a de solder gun.
@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Fair enough! Eventually I'd love to do a full solder project, but I'm not sure I'm ready to commit the money to a full custom board (not to mention commit to switches that I would for sure keep). I really like the idea of the ID80 being a test bed for other switches however. Building a full custom board is definitely on my bucket list though!

Very well made video, I already have an entry level 65% custom mech using a 60g gateron black switches and acrylic sandwich case. Would you consider ID80 as a decent board for an upgrade? Apparently I still need the f-row, 75% is definitely going to fit my needs and I'm planning on buying this board as an upgrade so I won't have to buy another board to try different switches because of its hotswapable capability. @PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your new keyboard! Now you just need to wait patiently for it to arrive haha. For stabs you will need a 6.25u for the spacebar, and 2u for the left shift, enter and backspace. So in total you will need 4. I think Zeal sells theirs in a bundle of 1x6.25u and 4x2u. That's what I purchased for my ID80 and it did the trick. Zeal is my only 'aftermarket' stab I have experience with and it's quite good, but I've also heard that Durock stabs are quite excellent.

Great build man! I just built this as well and made a vid! One question: is your spacebar still loud as hell? I've been trying a lot of foam/sorbothane combinations and I still can't get my spacebar at a good level. It is manageable if I press it softly while typing. Thanks!
@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks! Spacebar isn't too loud IMO; it definitely doesn't sound like it overpowers any of the other keypresses when I'm using the board. I'd say the biggest thing that helped for me was clipping and using a decent amount of dielectric grease in the housing and on the stab itself was the most helpful. The amount of foam I put in in the video is the same as what I"m using now, and I haven't really noticed it being too loud.
@Curree84 жыл бұрын
@@PatrickRennie Interesting, I used sorbothane on the top of the PCB where it would fit and a bit on the bottom gap underneath the PCB. With a linear switch, its fine, but with a tactile, the thing is really loud. Will continue testing. Thanks!

Shipping took 5 months? Damn. Oh and how would you say this is compared to the gmmk tkl?
@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Ah, it was more like end of March - middle of July for shipping. I think part of the reason was due to the fact that I ordered when COVID was at it's peak. Plus I'm not based in the United States, and it seemed like people from the US were getting their boards faster. There is a huuuge difference between the ID80 and the GMMK in pretty well all aspects, but the two boards are in very different price points in the market. Keep in mind you can fully build out a GMMK/purchase one from the site for around $110USD. The ID80 board (just PCB + case) was close to $175USD on its own. Quality and feel is definitely better on the ID80, and the form factor is what I prefer, but it's not exactly 'budget'. That being said, the ID80 will likely be my main driver for a very long time. I hope that helps!

I'm about to get the ID80 from the mail and probably have the same build as you. Do you think cherry mx black is a good switch? Or what kind of switch do you think fits well with this board?
@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Hey! In my opinion switch preference doesn't really have to do with the board per se, but more what you prefer. Do you like linear switches? Tactile switches? If you like linears, then I think the Cherry MX Black is a great option. I personally really enjoy them, especially after lubing. Since this video though I have moved to testing/using the Zealios 67g V2 tactile switch in the ID80, and it's quickly becoming my new favourite switch! It just boils down to what you personally enjoy. The nice thing about Cherry switches is that they're typically cheaper than some of the more premium switches that are out there, and the beauty of the ID80 is the fact that you can always swap 'em out later. I hope that helps!

@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Plate mount - the stabilizers are mounted on the top plate of the keyboard. The plate mount version has little extra machined tabs on the aluminum to hold the plate mount clip. PCB Mount - the stabilizer is screwed directly onto the PCB. Generally this is better because there's less rattle, and the stabilizer is more secure. If you're looking at getting this board I'd highly recommend the PCB mount version.

Yeah that's not going to be super easy to find. Do you already have switches/keycaps and your budget is just for a board + pcb? ID80 should be in your price range, but apart from that you might be looking at boards like the Keychron K8, or the GMMK TKL as other options (both of those boards come in at under $100USD depending on the version).

Patrick Rennie I’m think about going with the id80 I’m just worried about switching out the stabs. Because I have no clue how to lol
@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Oh my dude, that's one of the easiest mods you can make on the board! If you buy screw-in stabs, or even just use the ones that come with the board its just a matter of having a screwdriver :)

Patrick Rennie have you tried out the id80 I’ve heard good things about it. My only concern is it not having rgb lol

Does the kit come with pcb, case, and playe
@PatrickRennie3 жыл бұрын
Yep, comes with everything you'll need except for keycaps and switches. I'd also suggest some sort of dampening foam as there is a lot of empty space in the case.

@@PatrickRennie its a joke referencing your modern warfare clip at the end of vid. Its a movement technique in mw which requires a rapid array of keystrokes and favors a sweet spot in actuation

So I just build mine and the numbers from 4+1 to the minus key and also F4 to the printscrn do not work for some reason. (solved)
@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, sometimes when you insert the switch the pins will bend and not be fully into the hot-swap. I would suggest checking out your pins to see if they got bent. You may also have a dead switch, so if you have some extra's you can also try that. Lastly, you can take a pair of metal tweezers and insert them into the hot-swap holes to see if they are actually 'activating' when using a keyboard tester. That will determine if your socket/PCB is the problem. Hope that helps!
@ThatGuyThatDid4 жыл бұрын
@@PatrickRennie It seems like I got a problematic PCB, but the main reason why I asked is because I tried using the tweezers method but I can't get it to work for some reason. Also I made sure all my switches pins are straight so there is no problem regarding the switches.
@PatrickRennie4 жыл бұрын
Dang. I'd reach out to Idobao and see if you can get a warranty on the PCB if that's the issue. Do the hotswap sockets seem loose when you open it up? you might be able to solder them back in place, however I have no experience with making those repairs.
