I don't understand why the complexity of sentence structures is a grading standard. My sentences can be simple and rich in meanings at the same time. I don't make my sentences complex just for the sake of being complex and native speakers of English don't do that either.
@TheBelalova8 жыл бұрын
杜嘉偌 what other options do they have to make sure you actually know and can use those structures? I guess this is the only explanation for this criterion. probably you misunderstood the meaning of complexity. The simple sentence represent something like ' i like eat chicken. i like eat fish' and actually you could just say i like eat chicken and fish'. The complex sentence structure is a thing to show you have ability to express your idea effectively rather than a mean to show off your understanding of complexity of sentence structure.

I find this test extremely biased and by no means it evaluates your ability to speak English, because some people are shy and they will get bad score on this even though they can speak and understand English to a very high level. @ya__basic6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, I will share with you what I shared with someone yesterday in another video. First of all, a lot of people say a lot of things about the dos and don'ts of Speaking Test. Some things are common sense and some are on the borderline of 'being-too-careful'. To answer your question - I didn't prepare shit! I just went and improvised while being calm as a Hindu cow! That was my plan. But, I will tell you a few "unconventional" things I did during my speaking. 1. I didn't understand a question which the examiner had asked, so I asked her to repeat. There's no biggie if you ask an examiner to repeat or paraphrase a question if you didn't understand it the first time. 2. I even asked for a few seconds (4-5 seconds, actually) to think before answering another question I didn't have an immediate answer to. 3. My examiner asked me another question and the answer I gave was more or less along the same lines of an answer I had given on a previous question. Here's what I think of a Speaking test - it is like having a televised interview with a talk show host. Just walk in with calm nerves, smile on your face, make sure your grammar is intact, your rate of speech is normal, your accent is understandable, your content is decent, and you will make it! Good luck!

@ya__basic6 жыл бұрын
Hi Eshwar! Hope you have read my comment above on preparation. I literally didn't prepare a bit for IELTS and I got 7.5 because I am naturally good in English since school. But I feel that if you practice all the mocks from the book you receive from IELTS after you register, that should be sufficient. After scoring an overall of 7.5, I wouldn't say IELTS is easy. I would probably have scored an overall of 8 if I wasn't sick with fever and having a hard time in the chilled center! I found Speaking and Listening to be the easiest sections. I have 7.5 in listening. I missed out on some words, I wasn't listening too carefully. Just listen carefully and you will ace it. Basically, you will be told a story and given a page with missing words. You just have to write down the missing words in the blanks. It's easy! They speak in British accent, btw. In writing, I received a 7. I am not impressed by it, I knew I could have done better. I didn't pay enough attention to the two graphs given on a question, and so my content suffered. That's my guess. Reading was the area I struggled with a lot! I scored only 6. I left many questions unanswered because I was all confused and all over the place. My tip here would be to definitely practice your reading skills, because the passages are lengthy and questions are plenty. One final thing I have noticed is that you can't afford to waste a second on real time exam. So, timed mock practices would be a good idea. Practice your weak area a few times, go through the IELTS format for each section and believe in your ability. You can ace it! Good luck!

Hey guys. I recently gave my exam (2nd march) *Listening test.* Section 1: Conversation with a mom to register her son for swimming. The question was form filling. Section 2: A manager giving new employees details of the store layout and what makes the store special. Section 3: A group of students who were discussing their art portfolios. Section 4 : A speech on the language and literature in Australia. *Reading test* Passage 1: A place called 'Elche' and it's famous due to its massive date palm plantations and the role it plays in the research of date palms. Passage 2: The cultures of West Africa. Passage 3: The down sides of multitasking. *Writing test* Task 1 They gave a table. The columns represented the domestic sector, industrial sector and the agriculture sector. Then they showed us how 6 different countries use their water according to the sectors. E.g. Australia uses 65% of water for domestic, 7% for industrial and 28% for agricultural sectors. Task 2 Many directors and leaders are older people at organisations. Many people believe that it is better for a younger person to be a leader. How far do you agree or disagree. *Speaking test* Part 1 Are you currently working or studying? Where do you study? Do you like the school you study at? What would you like to improve about your school? What forms of art do you like? Why do like these forms of art? Do you own any pieces of art? Do you have any form of education in art? Part 2 Describe a part of your country that you find interesting. Q1. Where is this place located Q2. How you got to know about this place. Q3. What is special about this place. Q4. Your feelings about this place. 1 minute preparation time. 1-2 minutes speaking time. Part 3 Do you like this part of the country that you find interesting? Do you believe that there are differences between the areas in a country? Do you prefer the countryside or the urban areas? Why? Do you think that there can be competition between 2 areas of a country as to where people choose to live? Is this competition good? Do you think such competition happens between schools as well? "Then she was like let's talk about town planning" Do you think urban cities are planned carefully? Do you think they can be planned better? Do you think too much planning make a town boring to live in?

Nina Gordon I think I put too much concern on not making grammatical mistakes when talking in English, which in turn makes me stumble or pause inappropriately and ultimately affecting my performance in exam...I think this is related to personal traits of trying to be perfect or flawless..another factor is that when you are very good at your mother tongue language you always feel helpless or awkward in some way when trying to speak a foreign language, making comparison between the two is unfair and fruitless and even could hamper your progress in learning and mastering a new language. In my opinion the personal factors play an important role for any progress. . Show quoted text
@thequerier478 жыл бұрын
Haytham Mekki Ah, that does make sense ad definitely would hinder your progress. It's okay! Practice makes perfect. Eventually you will learn to speak very well - because you already know how to online or on paper: It's just the time it takes in real time that affects you. I suggest keep talking to people in real life in English, and it will definitely help you further your skills. Habits definitely can shape one person's life, and if you're unused to chatting or conversing with a person in real time, it can be difficult. However, that being said I'm sure you'll catch up quickly since you already know the English language pretty well, and you've already nailed the sophisticated parts of English (Grammar, complex language, colloquialism) :)

What are the barriers that one might face ? 3. Some people say, that learning a foreign language requires a lot of effort. What u think? 4. Which foreign langauge is most spoken in your country ? 5. If 2 countries have the same foreign langauge, Does it mean that those two countries will have the same culture. ? I can see why he is graded 8.5 to 9. He speaks extensively with a lot of detailed vocabulary, grammar, good intonation, and uses many cohesive devices. He makes only a few minor grammatical errors.

I like that he is very laid back. It’s as if it’s just another day in the office talking to a coworker than having an exam. I think body language plays an important role in speaking tests.
For those people who complain about his accent and think he does not deserve a band score of 8. U should really read the criteria of marking again, there is nothing wrong with having an accent as long as you can be understood by the examiner. Ofcourse u will be assessed on how well your pronunaciation is but at least we can understand his speaking easily. With his fluency and wide range of vocabulary, he is absolutely fine to get a socre more than 8.
@theaweary9 жыл бұрын
+PERCY BUTTONS Accent is acceptable but pronounciation is worse than his accent. That is a reason why people complaint it couldn't be a 8-9 mark.
@ericasenglish86134 жыл бұрын
He also speaks with natural intonation, thought groups and word and syllable stress, hence the high score.

unbelievable he's keep on saying uhmmm according to my eilts teacher it decreased your score by saying uhmm many times. how come?
@IELTSwithBrad4 жыл бұрын
It only decreases your score if you say ummmm when you are trying to think of vocabulary half way through the sentence. For example: I want to be a ummmmm engineer. It's ok to say: ummmm I want to be an engineer. Umm for thinking is ok but ummmm for trying to remember is not good for fluency and vocabulary.

I was also expecting a more native-like performance, but i'm glad He got high score, i couldn't study enough ,and neither i had very good results, but was somehow fulfilling to know i have some start point, and also would be very excited to improve. I guess maybe to grasp a nearly C1 level, one important thing is to live days and days in full English, everyday situation, i mean, reading, composing phrases when you talking to people at street, job, home, and when having your own life reflections on spare time. Just one more thing, we're all humans, life is always a learning adventure, and we somehow shere this very world.

Was not writing anything so I am not sure if what they show here is true.
@MValeM18 жыл бұрын
That's true. I took the exam years ago and during the second part I had the chance to write key words before start talking.
@martam5188 жыл бұрын
Key word. Its funny. They give you one minute to write key word. I think one minute is mot enough even to think about a person i want tobtalk about. I think they do it so people fail, and they have to pay over 200.00 usd to retake the test. Even on my matura test you have much more time just tl thinknabout the subject you want to talk about. I think this " one minute they give you" before speaking is a big joke!,,
