It's all just pretentious BS.There's been actual experiments with blind tastings with a bunch of supposed experts, and it was concluded that, without some fancy label or any indicator of what wine it was, most of them couldn't tell a pinot noir from a walmart box wine. Results were all over the place and everyone was probably guessing most of the time.

Most people who enjoy drinking are not always there to be professional about it, they just want to enjoy it. Personally, I still find it odd that they spit out the wine during wine taste. Although I guess the reason is to not get too drunk during said wine taste test makes sense. Drink responsibly and experience new things while still having fun is my personal rule.

One tip someone gave me; simply order the house red. Or house white. All restaurants want to shine so they pick a decent one. It nicely cuts through all the "wine angst" that not knowing anything about wine creates. There's a smoothness about it too, ordering this way. Course if you know and are up to date on current vintages, run with that. Have had many people say that was a kool move. The wines have always been pretty good. Fun stuff

@@bobbyhempel1513 it mainly depends on when the grapes are harvested. The sweeter wines are known for deserts but in all honesty all wine is the same it’s just brand names.
@daemondaemonus490
@daemondaemonus490 Жыл бұрын
@@bobbyhempel1513 There’s actually a lot of factors that affect the end result of a wine. For example, where I live we have “ice wine” whereby the grapes are left on the grapevine until the first winter frosts come in, thereby freezing the water in the grapes. With an extremely careful pressing, the juice extracted from these grapes has little to no dilution through the natural water in the plant, resulting in a very sweet and highly flavorful dessert wine, although a rather potent and very expensive one. Other factors that can affect sweetness include the acidic processes (there’s a process that creates, I think, Lactic acid in wine, it’s been a long time), how the grapes are pressed, what container they are stored in, what yeast is used to ferment them and whether they are vegan or not (you might be surprised there, most wines are not vegan!). I hope this answers your question somewhat.

Taste can be subjective to the point where even the music you're listening to while drinking can affect your experience. I once particpated in an experiment where the test group was served wine (either red, or coloured white so it would appear red), and for each wine we had to fill a little survey regarding the kind of wine (red or white) and our perception of the flavour (bold or subtle). Along with each wine, there was background music, that changed for each wine. The results of the survey mostly matched the music: bold red for Carmina Burana, subtle white for soothing classical music, and so on. ... Turned out it was all the same wine. We were served the exact same wine every single time.
@ericdculver

Heard they did an experiment once where they switched the labels on an expensive wine and a cheap wine and gave them to professional wine tasters. The wine tasters used all sorts of good terms to describe the "expensive" wine, and bad terms to describe the "cheap" one. Then the experienters revealed what had happened and the wine tasters when not very happy.

It's been done a few times, it's all complete nonsense by a bunch of snobs who think they're sophisticated and high class. The truth is no one really likes the taste of alcohol, sure it's developed over time and years of consuming it gets one used to the taste but everyone drinks for the same reason and that's for the buzz it provides.
@Elyoslayer
@Elyoslayer Жыл бұрын
@@SherLock55 Yes and no, while it is an acquired taste (I still prefer sweet drinks [like sprite] over alcohol, I do many alcoholic beverages/distill tastings nonetheless) alcohol combined with water can extract a variety of different flavors due to their solubility and since it's a near blank template (as is water) can display them when consumed. So a lot of flavors that are missed or can't been be found otherwise, can be tasted in alcohol. For example, you can't exactly taste the many different notes in a piece of wood if you bite into it, but you could if you poured alcohol in a barrel made of it (or in some cases dropped wood shavings in it) and let it age to extract those flavors, further made possible by the fact that alcohol kills pathogens and so its able to be maintained in a safe state for years, centuries or more. Something not possible when done with just water.
@RoxxiTheDiceGoblin
@RoxxiTheDiceGoblin Жыл бұрын
@@SherLock55 I think the more accurate statement would be very few people actually like the taste of wine. Wine is a VERY acquired taste and I'd argue most people drink it because... well... it's the done thing. Alcohol as a whole? Nah, I LOVE certain Rum's and Whiskeys, but the key there is that they actually CAN taste different to an extent. I strangely, also quite like Mead.

Love this so much. We always build up tension and anxiety with so many walls and social rules, as if it's embarrassing to admit we're new or uncertain about something. But there's something incredibly authentic and splendid to someone who's willing to admit they have no fucking clue what they're doing, and have zero shame in it. I mean, if someone is being annoying with the manners on how to drink wine, they are a stupid snob. There are some "rules" to drink wines, but they exist to help you tasting it better and apprecitate it in the best way. It's not different at all from cooking.
