0:10 What are goitrogens?
0:20 What is a goiter?
1:03 Foods to avoid for hypothyroidism
4:00 Discover the best foods for hypothyroidism!
Let’s talk about the top foods to avoid if you have a hypothyroid condition.
Goitrogens are things that cause a goiter. A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland. Goitrogenic foods interfere with certain enzymes and hormones and can lead to a goiter.
Foods to avoid for hypothyroidism:
1. Cassava
2. Lima beans
3. Sorgum
4. Sweet potato
5. Flax seed
6. Cruciferous vegetables
7. Millet
8. Soy products
9. Onions
10. Gluten
If you have cruciferous vegetables in very small amounts (less than five ounces), it shouldn’t be a problem.
Cooking, steaming, or fermenting cruciferous vegetables also reduces their goitrogenic effect. Having sea kelp as well may also help.
You would also want to avoid anything that depletes selenium, iodine, iron, and vitamin A.
Good sources of selenium and iodine:
• Seafood
• Sea kelp
• Sea salt
Good sources of iron:
• Red meat
• Animal products
Good sources of vitamin A:
• Egg yolks
• Butter
• Cod liver oil
• Beef liver

The suggestion to have more kelp is based on the simple fact that thyroid hormone uses iodine rather than any real-life evidence. Iodine is in fact very heavily present in the standard modern diet. If anything we need less of it.

I had mild symptoms of hypothyroidism for a while, like tiredness and weight gain, though I've never thought that they were serious enough to check with a doctor, so I decided to stick to healthy diet and take supplement instead to treat these probs. The only 2 things that improved how I feel greatly were: fatty fish; like salmon, and fresh ginger. I could understand why salmon would make me feel better (because of the zinc and the iodine obviously) but I couldn't understand why fresh ginger is good too, until I found that it has iron, which as well can help convert T4 to T3. Thanks for your videos Dr Berg 🌸

The negative long-term consequences of ketogenic diets may far outweigh any potential short-term benefits, according to a comprehensive new review published in Frontiers in Nutrition. Keto diets have skyrocketed in popularity over the last decade due to their ability to promote quick weight loss. Typically very low in carbohydrates, modest in protein, and high in fats, the aim of keto diets is to push the body into ketosis-the state in which the body uses fat for fuel. Foods like red meat, fish, nuts, cream, eggs, cheese, oil, and non-starchy vegetables are given the green light while starchy vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, and lentils are avoided as much as possible. For this latest meta-analysis, a group of physicians, researchers, and registered dietitians analyzed more than 100 peer-reviewed studies on keto diets to identify long-term effects. They found that people who follow such diets have a significantly increased risk of developing heart disease, LDL cholesterol buildup, kidney failure, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cancer. They also discovered that keto diets are particularly dangerous for people who are currently pregnant or may become pregnant. Low-carbohydrate diets are linked to birth defects, particularly neural tube defects, and gestational diabetes even if the pregnant person is taking folic acid supplements. Additionally, for those living with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the high amounts of protein consumed on the keto diet can place excess stress on the kidneys and worsen the long-term internal damage of CKD. So why does this diet have such negative side effects? The study’s authors suggest that it has to do with the nutrient quality of the food being eaten. “The foods that are emphasized on a keto diet are the very products that cause colon cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease,” says study co-author Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and an adjunct professor of medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine. “New research also shows that these same foods raise the risk for severe COVID-19.” This sentiment is echoed by lead review author Lee Crosby, RD. “The typical keto diet is a disease-promoting disaster,” says Crosby. “Loading up on red meat, processed meat, and saturated fat and restricting carbohydrate-rich vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains is a recipe for bad health.” Originally developed in the 1920s as a treatment for patients with severe drug-resistant epilepsy, the keto diet has been shown to be effective for reducing seizures in extreme cases. Scientists believe the diet decreases seizures by making less glucose available to fuel neurons. And although the study authors concluded that eating keto could be beneficial for seizure management, they say the risks far outweigh the rewards for most people. Instead of going keto, Barnard suggests a whole food, plant-based diet: “On a low-calorie diet, people might lose weight, but they have to go hungry to do it. On a keto diet, they might lose weight but they feel guilty if they have an apple, banana, slice of bread, or a cookie. On a plant-based diet, you get the best of all worlds: weight loss, delicious food, better overall health, and you’re never hungry.”

I was a big consumer of wheat products (bread, cookies, cakes, pies) when younger. And like most of my generation, we were brought up on it. When I was in my late 30s, I had an episode where my throat felt like it had come under attack - a very sore throat and ears for several days. Not thinking it was my thyroid, I didn't get it checked out then, but did a year later when I was exhibiting classic low thyroid symptoms, (fatigue, felt cold most of the time, aching joints & generally grumpy and my neck looked swollen). I was put on a low dose of Thyroxin which I took for a few years before I went to see a Nutritional consultant. The resulting diet (no wheat, dairy, yeast or sugars as a leaky gut was also suspected) was a complete change from what I was accustomed to eating, but once I understood that my diet was the reason behind my problems, I stuck with it. That was 1997. By 1999, I decided to quit taking the thyroxin as I wanted to see how I would do without it. And I never went back as my thyroid has continued to improve. Now I do also like that the food industry has also made gluten free products more widely available since I began this journey to better health - it has made me feel like I'm not missing out when I feel the need to have a piece of bread. What has really been a game changer the last few years has been the availability of health information on the internet by caring people like you who are helping to educate us to the importance of our diets and the value of supplements . And done in such a way that we can understand the reasons and processes. Thank you very much.

I have a hypothyroid. I don't eat a lot of onions, but I do take the supplement Quercetin/Bromelain. I also have had IBS w/diarrhea and no doctor has ever suggested to avoid gluten, nor have I ever been tested. It annoys me, that when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, no doctor ever mentioned to avoid certain foods. Just like when I had my gallbladder removed I wasn't given any dietary advice. I really appreciate any advice Dr Berg.

No thyroid medication(never had any benefit from them only the side effects). I do have hay fever this year and just ordered some Quercetin/Bromelain for it as well, curious if it affects the thyroid if i take it some days in the summer

Took the left lobe of the throid 3 yrs later as the nodules starting growing and I had became hypo. About 6mos after the surgery I was eating cashew chicken which I didn't eat very often. Started going anaphylactic, went to the Dr to get tested. Allergic to Soy and chicken 😮 Everything is loaded with soy it's been a drag ever since not being able to eat chicken 😟

@@JustaKarenDiscoveredTheIntrnet gday mate Gday mate, well there has been quite a few problems since having a full thyroidectomy some are also from the radiation therapy etc. Weight gain was expected but not as much as I have. I was quite fit before, surfing, skating, hiking, helped coach sons AFL footy team, singing in a band for years etc. Im just about to turn 51 and still try to keep fit, but it’s really hard to lose the weight, I put on nearly 20kgs! But the exhaustion I feel everyday! Is really bad. I’ve had my Thyroxine (synthetic thyroid medication) increased, lowered, up and down like a yo-yo, but it didn’t help. I’ve really got to force myself to get out of bed to do stuff, I broke up with my partner at the time as she thought I was now lazy as before I was so active. I had to give up my job as a tattoo artist as my hands had become to shaky. My beard when I grew back was no where near as thick as it was, it’s dumb but I used to enter “beard competitions” and often win, I don’t know, my hair is super dry, brittle and falls out badly. It stuffed up my testosterone badly so I had to go on Testosterone replacement at 40, it wasn’t a age thing as that was all tested before. The radiation therapy caused some of the lubricantion glands in my eye lids to stop working, I was then also diagnosed with Glaucoma (not sure if it’s related, but it was 4 months after it started to cause problems) so there is quite a few. I’m not sure if men are affected in the same way as women? I know the percentage of the population who get it are women are more likely to have thyroid problems over men? Anyway thanks for the question. Cheers

One thing what i found recently is the problem of eating milk and gluten. Gluten contains gliadin and cow's milk beta casein a1, these two resemble each other. These two culprits often body thinks as an invader and when it does think as an invader, it will think from thyroid transglutaminase as the same. Because all three as the same structural likeness. When body creates antibodies to destroy casein and gliadin, it causes inflammation by mistake of attacking thyroid. Also after inflammation will come leaky gut where these two can go to bloodstream and cause higher inflammation. One good to check is gluten cross-reactivity.

I was hyperthyroid, medication was not able to control. I was told I needed to do the radiation coctail, first time 2 days before the drink, my thyroid just quit (so I was poisoning myself (still taking PTU at the time). I really believed that I was so scard to take the radiation that my mind made my body to quit the thyroid overtime. Time frame from 1989 - 2005-ish, My thyroid came roaring back, I ended up doing the cocktail. After that I was put on Levothyroxine Sodium, so I am hypothyroid.

Dr. Berg, are you taking new patients? I live in SW VA but would be willing to make the drive to see you. In 2012 I had a diabetic ketoacidosis, not knowing I was diabetic. Two weeks prior i was diagnosed with pneumonia, given antibiotics and steroids. I was in Niagara Falls when it happened, and everything that could wrong, did. My sugars topped over 800, renal failure, a fib, severe drop in bp, about 15 lbs of fluid etc. My A1C was 11.8...fast forward to today, my A1C is 6.0 thankfully but I never feel well. I have issues with numerous things and I take about 13 pills a day. I am 52 years old, overweight and just miserable. I have a wonderful endocrinologist but something still isnt right. If I could get full disability I certainly would because most days I can barely function. For years I have joked I need a Dr. House but nicer, you might be the one...Thanks for reading...😢

Hi Dr Berg ! I was wondering if we can have a video about the healthiest fruits to consume and which to avoid
@w1975b
@w1975b 11 ай бұрын
I know you asked Dr. Berg, but I will give my 2 cents. If you're going to eat fruit, stay away from high carb fruit. Fructose is harmful for humans, damaging to our livers, even the fructose from fruit (doesn't have to be high fructose corn syrup). Plus everything high carb (fruit, grains, etc) is high deuterium, which damages the mitochondria of our cells....BAD.

I had over achieve thyroid, really bad lost 3 stone in a month, with tones of symptoms went from 9stone to 7stone was really ill, I had to beg for a blood test as doctors wouldn’t do any sort of tests, just send me on ma way, I went vegan to see if it helped, when i did get help the tablets was what made things go worse too heavy a dose and I went to being nearly 12stone in weight which I had never been that sort of weight, I then got the enlarged thyroid, which made breathing hard, I was told it would never go down in size and I needed my thyroid cut-taking out and be on tablets for rest of life, I didn’t get it cut out as it’s important part of my body, it ends up I had also started early menopause, but I really don’t like meat and never did eat much of any meat all my life, so now this video is saying all the stuff i eat I shouldn’t eat, I’m lost and want to be healthy, just thinking that I need to eat meat makes me want to be sick. What else can I do, my thyroid has come down in size, when they said it never will, I’ve put on weight again and they now wouldn’t help me with my menopause, they can’t get the tablets thats to be taken with the gel for HRT, so now I’m on nothing and I really don’t want to get depressed again and feel like ending my life again this has been all going on from 2014

I always thought goiter is the result of having not enough iodine in your diet. I come from a region where there used to be at least one person in each family with a goiter and almost everybody had thyroid problems. With the adding of iodine to salt the goiters became rare but I now realize cabbage, onions and gluten products were stable foods too.

Stay away from iodized salt. It's not a natural salt. Use Celtic salt or Himalayan salt because they have the highest amounts of minerals that your body needs. Sipplement your body with iodine such as Iodoral.
