Thanks! I frequently donate platelets and plasma. Each donation also provides 50 mls of whole blood for testing. In last two years my donations totaled to about 1500 mls of whole blood and about 7 plasma volumes. Would be good to know if donations on this scale has an effect of immune system. I suppose I could do more frequent blood labs to see if there are negative or positive changes.

After giving a pint of blood every week for 7 years and once or twice a month thereafter since 1992 it hasn't negatively affected my immunity.

@@ritadallas670 Interesting. We are limited to once every 8 weeks in Florida for whole blood donation, which I used to do prior to platelet and plasma donation. Only blood marker I have to be careful with is ferritin which can drop fast especially with whole blood donation.

Blood cells comprising 90% of the body's cells seemed a bit odd to me, so I dug into the article. It turns out that Cynthia's interpretation of the article is correct. However, the authors' interpretation of their reference material was incorrect. The 90% value stated in the reference article specifically spoke of the percentage of daily cellular turnover. So, 90% of the cells that turn over in a day are blood cells. I just wonder how this mistake make it through peer review!

Mast cells being in the gut makes me wonder if they are part of the body systems absorbing amines and especially histamine from foods. Many foods are high in histamine especially fermented foods like wine, beer, cheese , alcohol, yogurt, sauerkraut, fish and seafoid especially high if its not fresh! And more foods.

I saw on the graph that the immune police are really concerned about the lungs....where we get oxygen in, and I guess there would be some around the heart...and of course the myelio and the blood....need them.....

lymph comes from Greek and means ultimately 'nymph' and has become lymph etc... and myeloid ....muelos or something frm Gk....prob via Latin etc means 'marrow' which is in bone, I loved eating marrow in bones as a kid....perhaps I was a Macrophagus Boyus

Don't you guys feel bothered at all, that the number you are calling a *tri*llion, doesn't divide by three? :/ This is the most disturbingly ridiculous and counterintuitive and unscientific way of counting, and I've been baffled by the confusing custom all my life!

This nomenclature of numbers is useful in the sciences where very large values are common. It refers to a thousandfold increase. Think of it as counting groups of three 0s 1,000,000 = 2 groups = bi 1,000,000,000 = 3 groups = tri

@@Renatus_Eruditus Except that a billion is 1,000,000,000 and a trillion is 1,000,000,000,000. At least in the American or short scale system, which I believe is used everywhere now. In the long scale system, the prefixes actually do make sense when you think of powers of a million. 10^6 = million, 10^12 = billion (a million squared), 10^18 = trillion (a million cubed).
