To give an example of pulling one phrase from a book, one the stuck out to me was from Marcus Aurelius' Meditations: "If it's in your control, rhen endure it; don't complain. If it's unendurable and out of your control, then it's out of your control. Don't complain". It's a paraphrase, but as someone who tends to complain, i've taken this passage to heart. Haha As someone who's an audit staff, my suggestion to other college grads getting into public accounting is that you better listen to Brian! Request to lead every client planning meeting regardless if you're a beginner or not. You only get so many of those opportunities every year!

Do you need to be in Big 4 to be successful in Accounting and can I have a good career if I do Tax instead of Audit?

I don’t intend to sound corny, but you have to define what success looks like for you. Is it becoming a partner? CFO? Is it making a certain income figure? In other words, what is your goal? Look on Robert Half’s compensation report to see what tax accountants are paid. In general, most people would recommend starting at the big 4 regardless of the type of work you end up doing.
