These things aren't mutually exclusive. Though yes, it's weird that people are now using this term for young guys when on tumblr it is exclusively for old, jaded, "war, war never changes" types (though the grizzled part is optional, since not all specimens are human). Probably the OG babygirl was Snake from Metal Gear, although it's unclear which fandom exactly used the term first. The inherent funny of calling an old guy who has definitely committed war crimes "babygirl" was part of the point. It definitely did however always mean submissive. An important part of the "babygirl" vibe is naivety, and the perception of virginity. He's an old soldier who is married to the job. Now, especially anime, this was *supposed* to imply the character was gay: but tumblrinas either missed the queercoding or wilfully ignored it.

I think the issue is that the definitions are making it about the subject (the "babygirl"). it's not really about the qualities they have, but the feeling they inspire in you. I view someone being babygirl as meaning you want to (theoretically) pamper and dote on them. this isn't the same type of person for everyone, but it's common for it to be a certain type of men because they're more likely to elicit this response
