A couple of points. First, when you remove a chuck from your lathe always place a good sized rag or towel beneath the chuck in order to prevent damage to your lathe bed and rails when/ if you drop the chuck ! The chuck location is governed by the registration recess on the chuck as it fits to the spindle. The bolts are only to lock the chuck in place so some clearance in the location holes is normal. That said, you would be more accurate if you make up some transfer screws in your lathe, (just turn them to a shallow tapered point ), and use them to mark the drill position on your spindle or whatever. If you check out Steve Jordans channel I think he demonstrates their manufacture and use. All the best, Mike.

I wish I knew about transfer screws when mounting this but didn't at the time. I would have used that method. I do like the idea of protecting the ways and lathe bed. those chucks have some heft to them and could easily be dropped or knocked against the rails. I will check out Steve Jordan. Thanks.

Hi Deez You can make your own transfer screws pretty easily and then you always have them for future jobs. First obtain some grub screws with Allen head drive. Then obtain an Allen key of the correct size to fit the grub screws. Using your lathe or a grinder sharpen the the end of the Allen key to a point, then cut of a small section of the key with the point on repeat till you have 4 small lengths of pointed alle n key. In use simply screw the grub screws into the threaded holes and then place the sharpened lengths of alle n key into the grub screws. make sure you have 1mm protruding proud. Then simply place your backplane against the chuck and give it a tap and you will make the necessary dimples to mark the backplate for drilling. Good luck.

Thanks. I just got a MX-750 that I'm trying to figure out a 4 jaw chuck mount for it. I was looking for adapter plates, but this is a good option.

If I had had a milling machine at the time I could have drilled the holes much more accurately. It did work out though. Good luck.

Now you have a 4 jaw, so you get to go watch Abom chuck up a shaft that weighs as much as a Volkswagen and indicate it true in about 2 minutes, then try it yourself with a little piece of 1/2 inch stock and swear at it for 20 minutes. But once you get the hang of it you can turn one end of a piece, flip it around in the 4 jaw, indicate it in, and turn the other end of it without leaving a line where the halves meet up. You can also turn eccentric features (on purpose) easily. The out of balance may show up in you work at some speeds, it will happen when you manage to find a speed where the unbalance matches a harmonic of a resonant frequency of the system, so it will probably be different speeds on different pieces. But you have infinitely variable speed, so you should be able to speed up or slow down just a bit to avoid resonance.

I’ve seen Abom to this so many times he makes it looks simple. I say to myself “I can do that”. The I get a 4-Jaw. Sheesh he humbled me. But it’s really cool to have a setup I can turn with non round or eccentric workpieces.

I got the exact same chuck, only with a brand name on it. Not the one that Amazon said, which was RATTMMOTOR. Same problem of course since my WM-750 is essentially the same lathe, just a bit longer. Same problem with my transfer punches from LMS being SAE, so were a bit sloppy. But I have a Seig mill, so I put it in the vice and drilled the holes at 17/64ths and then tapped using my HF tap and die set (the 89.95 one) chucked up in an R8 collet for the mill. I have one of those tap and die sets for the lathe tail stock and that fit one of my eight collets. It has two sizes of tap holders and three for dies. It has an M2 taper. Seems to have worked out good but I've yet to test it.

congrats on getting it in there but isn't correct as needs to seat . for my vevor 7 x 12 i took 3 jaw and 4 jaw to local machine shop to have a proper adapter plate made . plate will be bolted to 4 jaw and have 3 studs like 3 jaw so i can change out easily when 4 jaw not needed . also if chucknot balanced will take out bearings pretty quick . i like my tiny lathe , more accustomed toones ican turn brake drums on so this seemedlike a toy when itook it out of crate but am happy to report does fine for the small partsi need .

An adapter plate would be a much better way to mount this. I know it’s not perfect the way I did it but it does seat well and is working for my needs. I’ll make sure I don’t run it hard and vibrate it though. Good advice none the same. Someday I’d love to run a big lathe and turn some but metal.

That seems strange for a Chinese lathe I can mount 3 and 4-bolt configurations on my lathe I thought they would have done the same with the whole range of Chinese lathes but apparently not.

Not on this one. I looked for a long time and couldn’t find a 4 jaw with 3 holes. I know there are many ways to tackle this but I went with the option that made the most sense for me.

I can't believe you got the new chuck registered the way you did. The bolt holes are only good for fixture torque, not reliable location in machinist terms. The raised circle in the middle of the spindle nose is responsible for keeping the two pieces aligned. I expected you'd lose registration drilling holes you marked without the register seated into the chuck recess. You might want to check clearance between the mating surfaces with a really thin feeler gauge, like .0015" (1.5 thou). If you find the feeler gauge is able to slip in between those clamping faces, especially if it fits in on one side and not the other two, that might explain the wobble at speed. That spindle shudder could stretch the mounting bolts, making them brittle, eventually shearing or shattering. I'd hate for you to have that lump of metal come loose while it's spinning. Just something to keep in mind... If all these things pass your sniff test, I'm thoroughly impressed you pulled it off. Next time you go about aligning registered surfaces with tapped holes, try transfer screws. You'd have been able to thread the transfer screws into the chuck, register the chuck to the spindle, mark the spindle nose, then drill the spindle nose to match thread-centered points instead of relying on location guestimated from loosely fit transfer punches.

I didn’t know they made teansfer screws. Would have been the right way. All in all this worked out. It will work for me but may not be the right solution for heavy users of the chuck. It wasn’t terribly precise but it worked and I can now the square stock.

How was the registration fit?
@deezworkshop
@deezworkshop 5 ай бұрын
My mounting plate registered very well. It is fits as close as the 3-Jaw that came with it. I just wish it had a 3 hole pattern for the mounting scews, I had no success finding a 5" (125mm) 4 jaw independent chuck that had anything but 4 mounting holes drilled and tapped into it, other than that it fits like its made for this lathe.

@@deezworkshop went through same thing with my older smithy 1220. I was gifted a nice bison 4 jaw that has 4 bolts mounting from the front. I could not find adapter plate to go from my fixed one piece 5” 3 hole flange to anything remotely useful.. I ended up making a plate from the only scrap I had on hand 1/2” aluminum. 1st time making anything like that so not spending money on partially machined or raw stock for a trial run. Took a good while planning everything out but got it done. Any money spent went to tooling!

Nice, Glad that worked out. At the time I didnt have a Mill or the skills to make a mounting plate. I may have been able to find one online but I decided to tap it. The chuck was relatively inexpensive so I went for it. I wanted the ability to turn square or odd sized stock and didnt know when I was going to get a Mill back then. It works well enough for me so far.

@@deezworkshop no mill in foreseeable future. Smithy 1220 is a lathe mill combo but I have yet to get the mill portion running well enough to use other than a drill press. Wish I had the time , money , video skills to post my adventures.

I hear ya. The mill was quite a bit more costly and then more tooling needed. Making the videos is my spinoff hobby and does take a lot of time to edit down to something watchable. I’ll keep it up as long as it’s fun and people enjoy it. Thanks for watching.
