Today there was furious flying by IAF over Kolkata ,somewhere around 12.45pm. I was on the city streets riding my vehicle - there was constant sound of thunder in a sky without clouds (could be multiple sonic booms) . I looked up to the sky, there were many smoke trails of criss cross pattern which are not characteristics of some passenger liner flying high up - the sun was bright and the trails seemed to spread off quickly. I don't know if this was a part of some drill - since I have no knowledge of any airforce exercise in this region.

It is strange for the last more than 20 years we have purchased only 36 new fighters despite depleting fleets but Nobody is concerned about that. IT is similar situation of 1962 where our brave soldiers not got enough amunition and other things during war. The risks of not participating in AMCA might lead to an overall shortfall in air superiority and area denial in case of a 2 front war. With the Tatas taking a massive bet on Assam with a chip manufacturing plant, and Gujarat fast turning into an industrial powerhouse, the result of a two front war would be air assets concentrated to defend high value targets leading to massive damage and casualties elsewhere ( since the Chinese would take full advantage of superiority of numbers ). Without enough frontline multirole aircraft we will not be able to defend our transportation networks, power plants, dams and barrages adequately.

Wait, they don't want to take risk ? Who asked ? There are always claims over shortfall in demand. That's how the F-22 program became expensive and a developement cost of 350 million USD per aircraft was charged by Lockheed Martin to DoD. A similar line can also be established for suppliers to protect them from risk of low demands. Also, why they are going after the hard mechanical components first when it's known to everyone that electronics is the primary area of focus here? Airframe cannot be developed without understanding these requirements.

F-22 had a unique situation, it was a rare mishap by USAF. F-22 production was slowed down in 2008 and shut down in 2011, when US was fighting war on terror. They focused on F-35 which is a fighter/bomber and now F-35 A costs only 80 million.
