I assess dual pulse motor from mk2 may be added to mk1 frame itself. Mk1 has a good seeker, so a new motor can make it 150+ km range. No need to develop all new mk2.

Astra Mk3 should be something like an AWACS killer, with extreme range, but we also need to have Mk2 to be the main missile for BVR for IAF planes like Tejas, Su-30MKI, Mirage2000 etc. Astra Mk2 should be what Meteor is to Rafale, Eurofigher/Gripen, where as Mk3 should be for special purposes when to take out enemy AWACS before launching full operations

Skipping Astra Mk2 for Astra Mk3 is a good decision because the Aerial battlefield is shifting towards long-range and beyond visual range Even with the stealth technologies most fighter jets are being equipped with systems that would keep jets out of ground and aerial counter measures range.

Worlds best performing BVR is Meteor which has less range. Because range does not matter if it cannot be supported by radar. We need to make MK2 with 160KM and then upgrade with ramjet. Which will increase no escape zone

@@Jefe-Grande you need to widen your knowledge. Under Project Bheeshma India has picked around 60 Mig29; 10 Mig31; 40 Mirage 2000 plus new SU30mki. These aircrafts are refitted under upg program at southern bases in Mysore, Pondi, Tambaram etc with IAI/ Elbit supplied Aesa/Irst/Mwr etc. As per known sources except for body related stealth technology all the other parameters are being put under 2bn$ contract. Attention is given to thrust to weight ratio and speed using advanced RD93 and AL41 type engines. Few of these Mig29 were tested in Ladakh and they bet the Chinese radar and J20 fighters.

Astra mk3 is of 300+km range missile and astra mk1 is of 110km so we definitely need astra mk2 to fill the gap between them otherwise it will be a waste to use 300km range missile to shoot target at 120-200Km. Astra mk2 will prove to be cost effective in long run.

Air force should allow HAL to have a 30 unit assembly line ready that will aid exports and also allow faster delivery of planes to replenish the dwindling squadrons of legacy aircraft.

It's not a question of "allow". HAL is a business and has to make profits. The order for the planes have to increase before they will increase the production lines. Increasing the production lines is expensive.

In this case it's HAL who wants to complete the orders faster by ramping up production line to 30 planes per year but the air force seems satisfied with a 24 per year assembly line. A 30 plane per year will allow room for exports and also help replenish dwindling squadron numbers and make India more self reliant. The air force is not know for fast decision making. By the time they nail down on a plane the technology is already out dated.

They cant get more than 20 engines so. forget about 24 or 30 Tejas Mk1A delivery. Also with their track record. Delivering even 10 Tejas per year is going to be tough for HAL. They havent delivered even one Mark1 A yet. That will happen towards the end of this year. For last 15 years they are playing with Tejas . No one in the world cares about Tejas. World is done with 5th generator fighter and moving towards 6th generation fighter. INdia's DRDO and HAL should be sold to private players if they cant function properly. Its just crowd.
