A quick note regarding leaks: I’m sure some of them are true. I haven’t read leaks in a while, as I said - I generally avoid them. The ones I refer to in this video have been circulating for quite a while and were completely untrue. I’m not here challenging anyone who got leaked info that may have been accurate, especially more recent info. I was just noting that a lot of the early stuff that I’ve seen and heard people claim for several months will be in the movie is absolutely not accurate.

Anything that has to contend with people's childhood memories is going to have an uphill battle. Indy 2 is a shitty movie and if I'd seen it the first time today, I'd've laughed out loud. But today, it's still watchable and I **always** watch it through the lens of my childhood. I am looking forward to this, given Mangold's involvement.

@@miz4535 I disagree, since people use words in multiple ways, a word can have multiple meanings. But we are talking about a numerical rating system. There are two movies I can think of that are masterpieces according to lots of people that I would rate a 2 out of 5, because I found them boring and couldn't watch without falling asleep. If I just used an out of 5 rating and rated them a 2, you'd think I thought those movies were bad, but by every other standard of judging a movie, as professional reviewers tend to do, they're great movies, and just because I found them boring, doesn't mean you will. But if you went on my rating, you'd avoid watching them because I rated them poorly. But if I used a sliding scale that put them on the "I'm not a fan" tier, you may be more inclined to watch them for yourself, especially if you listened to or read my review. Those movies are Blade Runner and Lost in Translation.

I love the original trilogy mostly because of the filmmaking. The amount of insane stunts, great locations, amazing sets & clever vfx work still holds up. Films like Mad Max: Fury road, The raid 2, Extraction & Rurouni Kenshin: The final already showed great examples of how to apply these elements in modern filmmaking. This film almost seems like the complete opposite, lots of noticable cgi.
@CMontgomeryBurns09
@CMontgomeryBurns09 Жыл бұрын
If I may nitpick, I'd argue for Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning instead of The Final. It's the most stripped-down, the most realistic, the least cartoony, etc., as well as the most standalone of the live-action series. Takeru Satoh is like the Grim Reaper in that movie. Also, I favor The Raid (2011) over its sequel (2014) any day. I liked the latter, but it was *at minimum* half an hour too long and boasted an entire subplot with Yayan Ruhian that should've been cut.

I didn't want to go see it myself after watching all the bad reviews and how all the theatres were empty etc. But my wife dragged me there tonight. I was blown away at how good this movie was. Absolutely none of the negative reviews were accurate. The CGI was good, the characters were well developed, Ford's performance was just as exciting as all the other movies and he's fkn 80! Dude's body is solid muscle omfg. These influencer first reviews are not from qualified film critics, they don't know the first thing about film history or what solid writing/directing is about. This movie completely delivered on all fronts. Definitely one of the last great adventure movies we'll get. I'm no fan of Disney trust me, but this movie is not bad it's even very very good. Such a disappointment. Dial of Destiny is a whole lot of whatever. Uninspired, all over the place, wonky visuals, lifeless performance from Ford, a wasted Mickelsson, lacklustre score, meandering and confusing story, and a limp, boring ending. The best parts of the movie are in the opening 30 minutes and then it just coasts and falls steadily for the remainder of the runtime. Love the sliding scale. I agree that reviews having a definite score kind of diminishes what makes enjoying films special. You’re going to enjoy different movies in different ways, so grading two movies as a B or 7/10 doesn’t mean they’re the same quality, it just means you got the same amount of enjoyment just maybe for different reasons. Idk if that makes sense, but all that to say I like the new system

@@jameswilliams-zr8co why is that interesting? Look what they did with Star Wars, Jurassic Park. There are precious few examples of this working, notable recent examples are Blade Runner 2049 and Top Gun Maverick. The people making the former were allowed to have a creative vision, but it cost the studio. The latter was a sequel to a film that's not good, and they made it years later to allow the technology to improve and to have a good script. These are exceptions but also circumstances not present for this film, where it's "board room approved" to the max and made first and foremost for money, although I'm sure Ford and Mangold are still passionate. Also, the idea of Indiana Jones and the idea of an old man who is musing on the past and becoming irrelevant are simply incompatible. They want to attach a character study to an existing brand and it just won't work because of the nature of the brand. You either make a character study, or you make something people expect from an Indiana Jones film. You can't make both. This is one of the fundamental problems with sequels: people's expectations of what it should be impact what it can be even if those ideas are good in a vacuum.

Last Crusade was most rousing film experience of my boyhood. As I watched the foursome ride into the sunset to the iconic score, I couldn't believe what I had seen: the adventure, humor, mysticism, globetrotting! Conversely, the fourth film has been my greatest cinematic disappointment. My expectations had been high and when I saw the alien ship take off, my stomach sank to the floor. That was the great payoff?! There were so many tonally inappropriate moments, the story never gelled, and even the lighting was garish and poorly handled. My expectations for the new film are therefore modest, especially given the decidedly mixed reviews. I don't expect to recreate my experience watching Crusade at age 12 in the least; I just want to be entertained and to see an old friend again. That's it. I realize it won't be at the level of the first three and that's okay; it just needs to rise way above the abysmal fourth one. I trust Dan and his review has me looking forward to a reasonably fun and well-crafted, if hardly exceptional, film. My only nitpick is that the review did not need a clip from the film. I watched the trailers but am purposely avoiding the actual clips that have hit the web this week, preferring to see actual scenes for the first time in context. I had to quickly pause and skip. Even if the clip in question isn't overly spoilery, it's still a tiny sliver of the film itself and I don't think your review needs that at all if it's spoiler free. Your opinion is the main draw all on its own. Oh, and I like the rating system and the nuanced way you qualify your opinion; thanks, Dan.

The distinction between "not a fan" & "stay away" is helpful because you may not be a fan of movie/franchise which others are fans of versus movie you genuinely feel are so awful that you give a review with the warning "STAY AWAY" at all costs. Numerical scores allow this as well. Not a fan could be something like 4/10, while stay away is like 1/10. Just subscribed and appreciate the review but I can't agree with your assessment. For me, it wasn't even fine. After the opening sequence with Indiana and the Nazis, it was all downhill from there. Sometimes I wish they should have just stayed with it. Phoebe Waller Bridge is the most unlikeable character I've seen since Galadriel in Rings of Power and that's saying something. And it was extremely long. The audience chit chat during the premiere in Cannes was repeated in our theater. Some people left. Unfortunately after spending $300m plus on this on top of whatever they spent on Crystal Skull, there are STILL only 3 Indiana Jones movies. I know you're not one of those paid reviewers, hence my subscription to your channel, but I feel you tried too hard to make this palatable. It's just a bad, boring long movie with an insufferable female character which makes the film painful to sit through. She basically plays EXACTLY the same character that she did in Fleabag and that was unwatchable. It was a Stay Away, as you'll never get that 2 and a half hours of your life back.

I feel the sliding scale is just a more explicit scoring scale. If I numerically rate something I consider how much I like it with 10 being amazing, 5 being ok, 1 being one of the worst things I've ever seen, and give a number based on that. No one should think too much about it, but it's good when you can see a score distribution (as opposed to one number). Then things like divisive films are clear. Beau is Afraid got mixed reviews but that was divisive and not just bland, so I watched it and ended up quite liking it. If it's a film everyone thinks is just ok (like this one) then chances are I won't go beyond just finding it ok, so I'm less interested. Similar score but different result. The only thing is everyone needs to have a sensible and somewhat consistent scale for this to work. Imdb ratings more often than not are not bell curves but decaying from 10/10 (with a spike at 1/10). Not how most distributions should look, so it is pretty much useless.

I have my doubts. I still don't really think I will like PWB at all. She came across as yet another unlikable girl boss character constantly talking down to Indy. It's telling that she has to say she is "Beautiful, witty, intelligent" in the trailer. You never had to have Marion tell you that because her actions spoke to her character traits. I also hate the reports of Indy being a brooding mopey broken old man. (And I very much hate the reports as to the reason why that is the case). People can shit on Kingdom, but at least Kingdom gave Indy some closure and a happy ending where he reconnected with a son, married the love of his life. And still the reviews that came out of the Cannes film festival alone give me enough reason to be skeptical. Indy should have like Back to the Future ended with the third film.

I really have an issue with Lucasfilm at this point; I watched the film twice, I'm 100% divorced from nostalgia, I found this film to be the best of the franchise. Similar issue with Star Wars, bring a novice, who doesn't know Star Wars, show them the trilogies; just like the original trilogy of Indiana Jones, the Original Trilogy of Star Wars are objectively bad films. Divorce all nostalgia and it's immensely clear how inferior these films are in dialogue, characters, nuance, plot, there are parts of the OT Star Wars that are truly atrocious. Force Awakens, Last Jedi, Solo and Rogue One are in a superior league. That, I think, is Lucasfilm's issue; it's the fandom, not Lucasfilm. They can't win, they made 4 perfect Star Wars films peaking with Last Jedi, a big portion of the fandom was atrociously against it. Andor, the best content to ever come out of Star Wars, is rejected by half the fandom. I had no idea I would encounter this same issue with Indiana Jones, but here I am; three ridiculous goofy and silly films earn status over Dial of Destiny, a film that surpasses all three in all aspects, because of its special place in our history and our upbringing, nostalgia. Lucasfilm is bound to always try and keep trying, it's nothing they can change. I'd love to read a memoir by Kathleen Kennedy detailing the behind the scenes on these projects greenlit then cancelled. Cause I can tell you right now, the decision to take both Elemental and Indi5 to Cannes, was probably Iger's; it's his bullish style; just like it was with Solo and Rise of Skywalker.

I appreciate your work Dan. You are thoughtful and take time to express your views on a film in a respectful manner. You don’t sensationalize things like some other KZbinrs out there.

2.5 hours is fine for a good movie. not everyone has a gen-z attention span. What are the demographics of people who go to the movies? In 2020, there were 1.32 billion movie theater admissions in the United States, with 44% of US adults going to the movies at least once a month. Moviegoers aged 60+ had the highest per capita attendance rate of 7.8 visits per year while millennials (18-34 years old) made up 33%.

Thursday 06-29-2023.. I saw the movie. I am a fan of the entire Indiana Jones franchise. I enjoyed this last adventure very much, thought the running time was perfect to properly tell and wrap up this story, and to critics who have given negative reviews.. Shame on you!

It is hard to NOT make a decision based on other reviews when they are all stacking up contrary to yours and it is apparent everything Disney touches burns tto the ground a complete failure. Indie J has been getting beat to death since pretty much after ROLA. Your scale is greatly lacking in depth and defined structure, subjective in it purest form. Sometimes it is better to just let something die a dignified natural death......both Indie and your new scale.

You've made me feel sooooo much better about seeing this! I want to be excited for it and all of these endless rumor videos and negative press really had me concerned. But knowing it's better than KOTCS, is what I was hoping for and wanting / expecting. And seeing Harrison one more time in action as Indy, I'm sure, will make me very happy. 🙂

Indy is now 50 years older. That makes him 50 years older, but not an OLD MAN. Gorgeous, funny film.

I could have written a better script. And I wouldn’t have written it for KK. The lead female character is a jerk. Mean spirted. And EXTREMELY unlikeable.

This film comes out on my birthday, and so that's how my wife and I are spending our evening. I'm really glad to hear that you enjoyed it, my excitement is so much higher now than it was 10 minutes ago :) Also the sliding scale is a spectacular idea. Huge fan.

It's not something I'll go to see. I have too much respect for the first three, but I don't want to see a sad divorced and lonely 80 year old Indiana Jones being bossed by the most annoying actress around at the moment, but that's not because of her character in the movie, but she just grates on me like nails on a chalkboard. 😂 This looks like yet another box office failure and that's quite sad.

It’s time we accept and admit that Temple of Doom is the worst Indiana Jones movie. It’s just plain bad, but with a couple memorable scenes.

Franchise films deserve to lose big money. Originality is missing in all these type of films. The first Raiders film was a nostalgia film for old time adventure movies. It seemed original at the time but people don't need repeats of this. If I'm wrong then this film should make billions. I just don't think it will or deserves to.

its bad people movie is a giant misery porn of butchering his character, life and legacy with cheap 'memberberries scattered throughout to make people think about the past all the while pushing new "better" female lead cause every film must have that now

Sorry everyone but the movie doesn't come close to the originals. That's the scale it has to reach. Just because it's better than crystal skulls that's not saying much. And I don't mind an overly long movie.

Okay, you've actually calmed me down a bit because I was pretty nervous about this movie. I'm a big Indy fan, I actually kinda like KotCS (or at least I like the good parts) so hearing this might be even better than that does help.

This is the second review which compares this movie to the Kingdom of the Crystal Scull and says it's better then that but not as good as the original trilogy. That basically means it's still bad and there is no excuse about that by saying there are some good parts.

10:04 - now where have I seen a rating scale like this before? Hmm... it looks remarkably similar to the one I built for my very first review show way back in high school over 19 years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJbIZZ6do5d-i7c If it ain't broke, don't fix it! - Glad to see you're adopting something similar here.

It's better than Crystal Skull, but it's not as good as the original trilogy. Well, that's confusing for me because I enjoyed Crystal Skull more than Temple of Doom, so I guess I'll just have judge the new one for myself. Thanks for the review.

I read the leaks and heard they are real, so Dan… the leaks were true. Spoilers! So dial opens time portals in the sky, two planes go through then and go back to Roman times during a war. They are thought to be dragons and shot at. At the end they meet Archimedes and Indy wants to die there. Punched in the face by Waller-Bridge. These were leaks… crazy how this type of stuff gets out.

As I said, in the pinned comment, in the review, and elsewhere - I'm not referring to all leaks. I'm referring to leaks that have been circulating *for a while.* It's no surprise that once the film screened publicly a few weeks ago that plot details began "leaking."
