No great scientist tells you to "ignore" entire fields instead of seeking to understand them
@_razzmatazz12 сағат бұрын
Are you seeking to understand why all these carnivores supposedly feel so much better on the carnivore diet? Or are you just writing it off as 'oh, yeah it's an elimination diet, of course they'll feel better short term?' Maybe with some mutual understanding we could find an actionable way forward that works for the most people possible. Like idk, 4-6months carnivore/keto to kickstart the process followed by a slow/sustainable transition to mediterranean but with a 2 month keto stint once a year or something. Nah, let's just ignore and not try to understand why people are flocking to carnivore. Let's just ostracize them and suggest that they're going to die soon from it despite them feeling physically much better, being able to come off meds, etc, etc. That'll be helpful, right?

He did keto which was fantastic. Then pescetarian, which was also fantastic. Then the Mind diet which was, you guessed it, fantastic. Then he did low carb vegetarian and felt fantastic. Now he is a carnivore since a couple of months and he is already having trouble adhering to it. Whenever he finds a diet he can adhere to I am certain he will feel fantastic. I would have thought that it's such a marker of junk food, that to have high levels you must be eating chips and fries. Thanks. For the life of me, I can't understand the comments about epi being weak. I trust it more than interventional studies for food, although they complement each other and the combo beats either one alone.
@BM1982.V26 сағат бұрын
That, and it's near impossible to run interventional studies on diseases that take decades to develop. Intervention studies can show biomarkers changing in the short term, but only epidemiological studies can show long term effects. The thing is too, the intervention trials agree with the epidemiological data. Intervention studies show cause and effect on various foods for biomarkers such as ApoB, while the epidemiological studies show that this elevated Cholesterol and the same foods leads to higher rates of heart disease. Both data sets are important but neither can replace the other. They work best for different situations.

The timing of this is crazy for me. Yesterday I was out with a friend, a meat eater but not into fad diets, who vigorously disputed my nutritional reasons - most derived from watching this channel - for being vegan. His line: almost nothing is really known with any certainty about nutrition. His main argument: 'Correlation is not causation.' Has Walter Benjamin's Angel of the Library migrated to the internet? Well prepared by my immersion in this channel, I made my case on the spot: yes, you can and must infer causality if the data sets are large enough, cover enough time and space and take account of other possible causal factors. Glad to see it backed up here with such rigor and authority. I'll try to report back if my friend has any response

@@Viva-Longevity Thanks, Chris. I'll try to look that up at some point. The idea of philosophical 'doubt' has been so grotesquely instrumentalised and distorted - as in fact has 'correlation is not causation,' a much trickier and less blunt instrument when it made its first appearance - that I know of - in David Hume's philosophy. My friend is an always interesting and sometimes very instructive contrarian who worked on some government nutritional guidelines in the country where I live. Some of what he said reminded me of your description of how the EU worked out its official (and misleading) definition of 'wholemeal/whole wheat/wholegrain'. I can well imagine how working in that field could lead one to kind of throw up one's hands and say, 'Nobody knows anything and no information is trustworthy.'

There is no aspect in medicine where you using correlation wish weak effect sizes from observational studies to make causal inferences. Great video as always, you do such a good job in these types of videos breaking down how science is being purposely misinterpreted by influencers. I’d like to hear your take on how the mistrust in establishment science and medicine is in part due to predatory capitalism-health insurance especially, but also how the publish or perish model in academic science holds back our scientists. Easy to be conned by snake oil salesmen when the system doesn’t look out for the average person just trying to get by.

You know, I couldn't make episodes like this if I had to make a living at it. It takes too much time. I'd have to bang out shorter, less well fact-checked episodes more often. And that's the situation with most scientists. Unless they have truly impressive funding from the NIH like Harvard and Framingham have, they have to bang out inferior, less expensive studies frequently and accept funding from conflicted sources. Gah. That's why I feel it's so important to focus on the landmark studies and thoroughly understand them. Which means, you're not reading thousands of studies as Nina claims she does, you're deep diving on the great ones.

WOW! What a fantastic video! Thank you so much for all of the time and expense you put into your amazing YT channel.💚💚💚💚 And thanks for recommending Scott Carney channel...I haven't heard of him prior to seeing him in your video, but I just subscribed and I'm going to binge!

Thanks! I wondered what people would think who just listen and not watch. Did they think I have a cough?

Meat-eating influencers: "We have a preconceived notion that red meat is good for you. Therefore any study suggesting otherwise must be pure foolishness."

This is really and excellent overview of how to find truth. I don't know why so many people aren't interested in doing that....

You know, I think ~10 nutrition influencers on KZbin are responsible for ~80% of views, and to be charitable, they are not the pinnacle of accuracy. We must really want to believe we don't have to eat our veggies. 🤷♂️

For me, the part of how food is grown just seems to be dismissed. Like meat grown on 50% legume, 30% herb, 10% tree, 10% grass is lumped in with the grain or grass fed junk. Like if you are going study the effect of meat, study meat coming from healthy animals. Same with flora, plants grown in soil in a regenerative style where old plants roots feed the life down there, plenty of habitat for preditors, permaculture, etc compared to people eating hydroponic shit are going to give vastly different results. When people are eating maccas cause it tastes better than what appears to be real food, but clearly it isnt, there is a problem. Agronomists are the problem, its why there is no real food, then real food is not being used in these studies. Then you expect us to trust the results. No way
