I'm struck by the irony of the Kahn quote "No architecture without natural light" yet he finds himself most effectively designing his own stunning architecture in a windowless basement studio without natural light. Wonderful interview!

@danieldavidsonn Жыл бұрын
I believe it's a Donald Judd design (Pawson uses his designs quite often).
@KlausLBern Жыл бұрын
@@danieldavidsonn I rather assume that these "floating shelves" are an idea from John Pawson. Especially as I have never seen such a shelving system in any of the Judd interiors or books. It would also fit in with John's "keep it simple" approach if (aluminum?) profiles were mounted on the untreated wall, which were then plastered flush.

@@est_living There is way too much grass in both the front and rear garden. There is almost no interest apart from the climbers (that are quite young). Having a minimalist simple (and beautiful house) doesn't mean that you have to have grass all around the perimeter. It is boring and not good for the environment! A white theme planting scheme for example!

Cold, inhospitable, almost algid. The few and far-in-between details that could make the living spaces more inviting, such as the wooden exposed beams and some pieces of furniture, are not enough to render the whole space actually livable. Architecturally exquisite for a house, terribly barren to be a home.

Those untrained in architecture or interior design would probably consider the buildings here ruined by the installation of modern glazing and the pursuit of the 20th century obsession; space. There are intellectual arguments against this: these buildings have never known conservation (it being a modern concept); buildings have always been adapted to prevailing tastes; homes are not museums, etc. However, I am one of the unwashed who regrets that the souls of these building have been eliminated on the alter of taste and design. Heritage is something to be cherished- If you want a ‘modern space,’ build a new one, I say. Still it’s the man’s castle and thankfully he can still do as he pleases.
