Sorry to see the collection get broken up. I live in the San Francisco Bay area and wanted to see the collection, but since it is private, you can't get in without an invite. I hope the tanks go to museums where they can be seen and cared for.

Interesting indeed! But why is the museum is closing down? I do hope very much that all these lovely vehicles will be in good hands!

Looks like a very well preserved vehicle. It's a shame the collection is being split up, but I'm sure all these tracked beasts will end up in good hands.

still used in russian army. Not in great qtty, but for training, in certain arty batalions of several infantry brigades (or division, call them like you want), notably those in isolated military districts like far east, and, still used in the marines. We have seen those in action (moving) during the "crimea crisis", or, you can simply look any photo report from famous websites (like militaryphotos) constantly showing them used in usual drills. So, certainly not "out of service". The 2S3 replaced it in many units, yes, but not totally.

Fair enough, I am re-educated. Thank you
@PATRONSKiii10 жыл бұрын
TheChieftainWoT Almost all "out of service" systems are... Actually still in service in the russian army :). Really have some surprises sometimes. Well, since 2011 and massive reforms, it's less and less true... Concerning the 2S1, there was a plan to replace the armament with a 120mm gun/mortar, but, apparently, it was not judged necessary. Not so long ago, T-55 and T-62 were still in service in some units, but, afaik, all were replaced by new T-72 (modernized T-72B) between 2009 and 2013.
@piritskenyer10 жыл бұрын
The 2S3 itself was phased out before the 2S1, in favour of other 152mm SPG's. the 2S1 stayed in service with the Russian Naval Infantry (equivalent of the Marines), and I'd say that the 2S1 is a much more versatile vehicle than the 2S3, mainly because its speed, amphibiousness and QF gun. A former Hungarian SPG guy told me that in speed drills they could push out 8 rounds in a minute. I for one think that the 2S1 is a vehicle that would be worth modernising and even evaluating for Western service due to its abilities. Just give it quick-laying capabilities similar to that of the PzH 2000 and you have the perfect SP medium arty for your amphibious troops.
@PATRONSKiii10 жыл бұрын
piritskenyer 2S3 was never "phased out"... It's the most comon SPG in russian army, serves in arty batalions of almost all mecasined infantry brigades/division. The "other 152mm spg" is the 2S19 T-80 hull based SPG, and, it's too expensive to replace even half of the 2S3 fleet. Serves in praised divisions usually, and most of the armored ones.
@piritskenyer10 жыл бұрын
PATRONSKiii Thank you I've been worng on that part then. Wasn't there another 152mm SPG between the 2S19 and the 2S3?

If you take a photo of any artilleryas it fires, the smoke and fire as it emerges from the barrel looks like a flower blooming.

"Boo!" and "Hiss!" at the thought of the collection being broken apart. It should be it's own armoured vehicle museum.

Export version ? I see English tag?
@FW2009 жыл бұрын
The reason that there is English on the inside is not because it got tested by the Americans but because it's an export model to the middle east. Soviets exported either with Russian signs (Eastbloc mostly) or English signs for the middle east.

I gotta admit I am liking the snapshots. I enjoy the full length ones as well, but sometimes The Chieftain gets all excited about the tracks and suspension and personally that just makes me snooooooze. I realize the track and suspension is of great historical significance regarding the evolution of tanks, but again, snoooooooze

Here's a crazy idea, why can't WG buy the whole collection turn it to a museum. That way they can save the collection.
@neogoterra10 жыл бұрын
who ever is pulling apart that collection needs to be dragged behind a BT-7. .
@neogoterra10 жыл бұрын
This is a museum though in a way and its better for the tanks where they are because they get repairs and maintenance, at a museum all they really care about is that the paint job looks good and most of the time the tanks there arnt in working condition.
@KingSNAFU10 жыл бұрын
neogoterra Their also selling off a few pieces at auction, they're selling an LVT, Panzer 4 H, M4A3E8 Sherman, Sherman jumbo and Sdkfz 7, amongst others.Which museum got the bulk of the collection? Here the auction websites page: www.auctionsamerica.com/events/overview.cfm?SaleCode=LC14

I think you are missing the point here: The man who owned and ran this collection passed away in 2009. I think only his wife survives him. Without any more money coming into the family, a choice had to be made. Auction off a large amount of the vehicles to "Proceeds from the July auction will finance the relocation and housing of roughly 80 of Littlefield’s most historically significant vehicles." Or, cease all restoration work and let them rot. Things are frequently more complicated than people let on, and getting angry about it is not helping anyone.
