Take it from someone who served on a 'grey funnel line' (Navy) high powered corvette and had my bunk in the bow. Seat belts across your bod when in your rack on a high sea is the duck's nuts! Saved me from getting tossed out of bed on at least five occasions. One across your chest and one across your thighs; loose enough you can still toss and turn in your sleep, but tight enough to save you from getting that aforementioned tossed from your rack.

Entrance to the crew quarters on the bering 77 explorer yacht is on the starboard side I believe and entered through the wheelhouse.
@LoanwordEggcorn2 жыл бұрын
Presumably crew access is on the port side because the crew is most likely to need to do work and transfer stuff to/from shore.

Very interesting & great to hear your South African accent. Coincidentally, I have a 45m superyacht berthed alongside me in Cape Town Harbour. She has changed names over the past couple of years from Summit to Bella T & now to Kevo. Undergoing a refit, she is stripped bare inside, which is why I'm watching this video, to get an idea of what the accommodation will eventually look like.

Jared, Jared, Jared. Crew access is on the port side because guest/owner access is on the starboard side. :P (And from the yacht tours I've seen, that's the same side as the galley.) If I'd known about yachting and yacht crew stuff when I was in high school, then I would have done it. (Actually, would have gone to a maritime college so I could be an officer on a container or cruise ship, or saved up for that while doing yachtee stuff.) Instead, I went into the US Army and ended up getting a permanent disability. But one can always dream. Also, tell Captain Luke he needs to finish up his 30 day challenge series. He's _waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy_ behind. You may have to teach him how to do this. ;)

Hey Jared, the crew entrance is on the port side because traditionally the port side is seen as the less prestigious side
@wictimovgovonca3203 жыл бұрын
When in port, the 'port' side was against the dock. The 'starboard' side was out in open water, so that the steer board (basically a rudder, but on the side instead of center of the vessel) would have plenty of clearance. Today, of course, most slips are stern in (or bow in), and you are against other vessels so it doesn't really make a difference. It would be interesting to do a statistical analysis today of which side most people dock their boat (e.g.fuel dock, etc.). My limited observation is a slight preference for starboard side against dock which is against tradition.

Always nice to see one of your videos Jared. Crew perspective shows if it's fun to work on a boat and Bella, as well as Ariens, seems to have good vibes all around. Funny you mention all the entrances to crew areas are at the port side for Italian, German and Dutch build boats. I noticed on Gulf Craft boats they have them galley side on the main deck but also starboard side in the cockpit area (UAE based builder). Princess yacht have them starboard for their "little" yachts but port for their bigger series. Makes you wonder if there is any reason for the port side preference.
