Mom Saves Daughter’s Birthday Party After No One Shows Up

Lex Fitzgerald wanted to give her daughter the best birthday party ever. Unfortunately, her 5-year-old daughter was left sitting all alone at the end of a long decorated table waiting for her classmates, who never show up for her party. Desperately trying to save her daughter's birthday, Fitzgerald sent out a plea on social media for anyone with young kids to show up to the party. Within 15 minutes, people started to arrive. I really mean it too. I have 4 children, 3 girls, 1 boy. I see the snobbery among the parents. It’s hurtful and petty. The kids need to see their classmates at their birthday parties to make them feel great and help celebrate their moment. Did you catch that? Their moment! as a former unpopular child. I would have hated having some kids I don't really know well come to my party because a well meaning parent thinks I don't deserve to be alone. Having to pretend I'm friends with them, worse than not having a party at all. You can't force friendship, the birthday kid knows it, your kids know it; it'll just be awkward for all of them.

I worked at a movie theater and there was one time there was a party where only one kid showed up. We did much more than we usually did for the parties just to ensure those two kids had a good time. They got posters, promotional items, person tour of the projection booth (we weren't supposed to that anymore), refills on everything, all the employees sang them happy birthday. Like just as a worker its so hard to watch that kind of situation and not try to help

My teen daughter made a Facebook friend through video games and he ended up in hospital with a terminal condition. She went out of her way to visit several times. After he died his sister got in touch with her and told her that she and her boyfriend were the only people apart from family who ever visited him in hospital, and thanked her saying it had been very lonely for him and he was very cheered up by her visits. I was so proud of her doing that.

This happened to me when I was 16. It wasn't a birthday party, just an invite to a group of friends when my parents were away for the weekend. I got everything ready and....no one showed up. Not a single one. Turns up they were on their way and stumbled upon a house party of someone they knew and decided to go to that instead. Was a terrible feeling and still remember it to this day despite it being a long time ago.

That kinda happened to me when I was 16, too. I invited all these people yet only my best friend, my boyfriend & an old neighbor friend & his brother showed up. It was for my 16th birthday & my brother’s 21st birthday (he’s Autistic so he was just happy to go to Pizza Hut). It was at that moment that I realized those “friends” I invited weren’t my friends. Ever since then, when it’s my birthday, I take myself out or take my brother out.

In primary school there was this one girl who had a birthday party, but she didn't have any friends. I was always nice to her (but we weren't friends) so she decided to only invite me. I knew I was the only one she invited and eventough we weren't friends, I still decided to go. In the end I did enjoy myself and it was quite nice and she was really happy that I came to her birthday party. Moral of the story, even if you aren't the best of friends with someone, please still go to their birthday party. It's a small thing you can do to make someone happy on their special day.

I think it was better for the girl that her experience ended with the memory of the number of people who did show up to her party. I used to work as a party pro/manager at BounceU and I cannot tell you how many parties i worked where no kids showed up! Its the most devasting thing to see in the childs eyes, but also the parents. They spend so much money and put so much time and effort into these birthday parties just for nobody to show up.

When I was in third grade, a classmate had a party at a bowling alley. Originally I didn’t get an invite, but after asking her for one… she handed me the invite. When her bday arrived my mom got her a small gift… and we arrived at the party. No one from our school came. I was the only one. From then on we’ve been friends. This happeded to me when i was 10. I invited all my friends at school to come spend my birthday at the skating rink. One time in elementary school, I was invited to a classmate’s sleepover. She was only a few blocks away so I was able to go, but despite inviting the entire class, I was the only one to show. Same thing happened to my child. We invited around 40 people including every kid in her class. Planned it all. Had food and drinks for tons with little gifts they could take home. We made everything ourselves and was so adorable. 3 kids did show up thankfulky. 1 came later so was only 2 for most of it. Broke my child's heart. She had waited at the door for everyone to show up. And kept asking where they were. After that year I never planned for more than say 8. I knew all 40 wouldn't show so that's why we invited so many and I figured at least 15 or so would show. Just broke my heart for her. Now I try my best to reach out and get others to come and invite lots of family as well hoping for anyone with kids to show up. She's had a couple now with at least 10 kids which is nice but also a few with only 2 to 3. Bugs me when others RSVP and don't come when they didn't have an emergency or anything else going on. I’m glad the community came through for her. When I was in grade school a peer invited everyone in the class to his birthday party and I was the only one who went from the school. The party was only his family and me. We weren’t great friends, but we were pals, and I was very honoured to be invited and made a point of arriving on time. His family were so excited that I was there and though I have really severe social anxiety, I enjoyed myself and we had a lot to talk about at school that week. I also explain how it’s important, that if someone has been kind enough to invite you then it’s polite, respectful and courteous to attend. I feel like I see a story like this at least a few times every year. Never rely on classmate only parties. A lot of the times the kids aren't really friends and the parents have never even spoke to each other. Some parents RSVP just to pretend to be polite. If you don't have family or friends with kids to help celebrate, just take your child out for dinner/lunch and a fun activity.

I remember in 2nd grade, I invited a select few kids to my birthday party, and the teacher scolded me because I invited a select few. (Mix of boys and girls) she told me either invite the entire class or just the girls, but not the whole class. Not like it mattered at the end of the day, because only a few kids showed up, and only like 2-3 were from school and the other few were either neighbors or people from Scouts.

I had a birthday party in elementary school once, and nobody came which truly made me forever hate birthdays and want to gather because I fear people wouldn't attend. I'm glad the mom was able to find supportive people in time. It truly means a lot to a child. I'm so happy the child ended up having people show up with gifts too last second! The community bond is so important. Till this day I despise having birthdays being 30 now, but for different reasons, ofc, I moved on, but I still won't forget the feeling of showing up excited to nothing but an empty table and wasted money on decoration and cake. That made me feel unwanted and ashamed throughout my elementary years about myself as a child. I become scared of people and had a fear that everyone around me were just pretending to be friends with me. The community showing up truly makes a huge difference, she will at lesat have good memories moving forward, hats off to the mom as well for quick thinking!

Those same people used to tell me all the time I'm to blunt, I'm tactless and far to litteral and it's embarrassing for them.. and I eventually found out these was the reasons they kept canceling plans with me.. fast forward some years just before my 37 birthday I was dinaosed autistic and that's the reason they didn't really like me 😂 I've over it now! Screw them! I've since had amazing party's with amazing people who like me for me and wouldn't leave me out and push me out of things! I hope your child heals from the hurt from it. @@rbmw981 I'm so sorry. Some of the smartest most unique people ever have this gift. I had a friend's 8 year old son in the car with my 3 yr old daughter and a blinding snowstorm closed the road. I was not very familiar with their town so didn't dare take side streets. Michael normally recited every word with ads of all the shows he'd watched the night before. Suddenly I realized he was repeating street names and turns. I followed his directions and we arrived at his house the back way. His mom didn't even know he knew the way by memory. Forty five years later I'm still amazed. Blessings.

Her family came from Louisiana (we were in Texas at the time) and they cooked crawfish, lobsters, and a bunch of other seafood. That's why they got the kids (parents) to confirm with an RSVP in advance. It's cruel for her "friends" to say they were attending then break that promise. I hope some flakes see this and realize how much harm they can cause when they break RSVPs. Obviously legit things can prevent attendance and courteous to notify event planner, but rare that 100% of those who RSVP to flake out.

I fought this idea every year by telling them I'd still get them one (which I would do).... and so they keep giving me gifts. As a disabled person who lives alone and don't get to see family members often, it just feels nice getting a few gifts from family members each year (I don't care if the gift is cheap, it's just nice to have any gift no matter how small).

Lesson learned for all of us!! Never invite anyone to a party unless you absolutely know them. Keep the invites to a minimum. Except now most teachers make a rule where when a kid has a birthday party, they can't exclude anyone, they HAVE to invite the whole class. That's why one of my coworkers who has kids always has her kids keep the party on the down-low, only has them invite a few of their closest friends and sends the invites out through the mail instead of having her kids give them in class.

Best option for a classroom friend party is to just have them in the actual classroom. That's what I did for my child until middle school. As a introvert kid my mom knew this was bound to happen at some point so she almost always used to meet with the parents of the few friends i had and try, develop a sort of relationship with them. She always said that its easy to say no to a stranger but doing that to the person who you personally know is kind of hard. My bfs parents at that time drove about 50 miles in traffic to come to my party at 9 pm....we all were waiting for them from like 7:30 and it was a blast. Im seriously amazed at what all she did for me back then, as an adult its near impossible for me to do the same for any future kids i have but im gonna give my all to make them have the childhood i was gifted with

I am so happy to see that so many of the kids in the community showed up for the party to make it better for her. Unfortunately things like this even happen in adulthood. For my 28th birthday there was a reservation at a nice restaurant for myself and 8 others. As the date got closer and closer, people started to cancel with really no reason and by the time I got to the restaurant for the reservation, the dinner reservation that was supposed to be for 9 people ended up just being me. I was all dressed up and of course extremely disappointed, but no matter what I was still going to enjoy my favourite meal and celebrate myself. The restaurant staff were amazing and I could tell that they felt bad for me for being alone on my birthday and so they did their best to kind of keep my company. They ended up giving me way too much champagne and so I ended up getting very drunk, but I think that was their plan to try to get me to forget about the bad part. At the end of the night they wouldn't let me pay for my dinner and drinks even though it would have been a couple of hundred dollars and they walked me out to my cab to make sure that I got home safe. I still think of the kindness that restaurant staff showed me and ever since then I have made it a tradition to take myself to my favourite restaurant on my birthday and to celebrate myself and be happy. I do think it would be great if everyone had others to celebrate their birthday with, but if not, everyone should always celebrate themself. (I also buy myself a Christmas present every year and take myself out for Valentines Day)

Even though I got a boyfriend who buys me for birthday, Christmas, and Valentines, and though my son is from the most previous relationship with ex-cohabit, he buys me a Mother's Day present as well. Some of the things he selects himself, but never been disappointed by his selections. I still buy for myself ( as well buy for him and my son ). I’ve spent most of my adult life on my own and so every so often I treat myself to what I call “me date days”. I treat myself to some of my favourite things. For me that’s usually a massage(low cost through a massage school), hair appointment and a nice meal out. Life can be tough sometimes and it’s important that we do things that make us happy, no matter how small they may be.

This honestly made me cry. It made me remember how when I was in 1st grade, I invited my classmates to come to my birthday party. Only one person showed up, and it was because she felt bad for me. Everyone hated me, I was bullied for years after that too. Years later after moving away, I met the same girl and she told me "no one misses you, they all hated you, everyone is glad you left". A bully of mine reached out to me and said sorry for how they behaved as a child and what they did to me. Like yeah, guess your conscious slowly caught up to you. I said it was fine, but it really was not fine. It ruined me and changed the bright sunny confident girl, to someone scared and shy. I will never forgive any of them. I just hope me and whoever has ever been in my sitation that did not have a community to help, to find peace. Someday.

It happened to my son twice, no one showed up and we were at the park I started talking to parents at the park asking if they would like pizza and cake. So many random people stopped what they were doing to help him celebrate. Then again a few years later he went to school the next day and was handed a birthday invite I was upset just standing there and my son goes “mommy maybe if I go to theirs some one will come to mine next year” this was at pick up in front of all the parents. The teacher goes “How many friends came to your birthday party yesterday?” My son said “none, no one came!” The parent just couldn’t make eye contact the next day at school he got cards from the kids saying I’m sorry and someone sent him candy. Another mom brought cup cakes in to the school to sing him happy birthday

That happened a few years back to my daughter. We sent out invites 2 months before her bday and another mom sends invitations for her daughters bday a week before on the same exact day as ours and everyone went to her daughters party. Was so heartbreaking seeing the look on my daughters face and trying to explain why no one came.

The one good thing is that other people showed up with presents. That was a wonderful thing to do. I don't know what happened to the classmates, but I think this adorable little girl made some new friends from this experience.

I had the same thing happened to me when I was 11 but back in the day they didn't have social media and Facebook so I was alone with my mom for my birthday. It's a heart-breaking picture that I still have in my collection of vintage photos. I'm was a really sad little girl with no friends that showed up. I am so glad that it worked out so well for this little girl!

This happened to me once as a kid, felt super awful! But one of my friend's parents then set up a surprise "make-up" sleepover party for me, and it made it all better. Unfortunately the parents of my childhood friend recently died in a tragic car accident. They were the nicest people and I'll never forget what they did for just a random kid.

This reminds me of a friend of mine in high school where she threw a big party and invited a bunch of her friends from school but no one showed up but some of her family and me. I felt really bad for her so I danced with her at the end of the party

All I said was I’m glad my mom didn’t reveal to the whole world my embarrassing moments and what she did to make me feel better. I wouldn’t want to be remembered online as the girl who had no friends show up.

When I was in elementary school a friend had his birthday party but there ended up being a snowstorm and no one showed up except me and my dad. We almost didn't go either. I'm glad we did. I had fun. I hope he did too. I'm glad people were able to make it to her party. Good save mom and community.

I had no one show up to my birthday party when I turned 6. My parents did an awesome job keeping me happy but at that time. It was very lonely and the fact I didn’t have a lot of friends at the time… but I’m grateful for the love my parents gave me during my lowest points as a kid. 💙

Same thing happened to me when I was a little girl. One classmate was angry at me because, when asked if I thought she was too young to be kissing boys I said yes. She made sure nobody showed up. I'm so happy the community came through for you. It is absolutely devastating to have this happen❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

Absolutely! I was thinking the same thing. That was very hurtful to that sweet little girl. She didn't need to relive the sadness and disappointment of that day. Mom, that wasn't a mom thing to do. We protect our young ones from stuff like that.

What an amazing community!! Shame on those that didn’t show up after RSVPing. My community was amazing when we had to cancel my sons party during COVID. Everyone drove by and dropped off home made cards and gifts. They made it so special for him. As much hate as there is in the world, there is even more love.
