Mom Saves Daughter’s Birthday Party After No One Shows Up

Lex Fitzgerald wanted to give her daughter the best birthday party ever. Unfortunately, her 5-year-old daughter was left sitting all alone at the end of a long decorated table waiting for her classmates, who never show up for her party. Desperately trying to save her daughter's birthday, Fitzgerald sent out a plea on social media for anyone with young kids to show up to the party. Within 15 minutes, people started to arrive. My teen daughter made a Facebook friend through video games and he ended up in hospital with a terminal condition. She went out of her way to visit several times. After he died his sister got in touch with her and told her that she and her boyfriend were the only people apart from family who ever visited him in hospital, and thanked her saying it had been very lonely for him and he was very cheered up by her visits. I was so proud of her doing that.

I worked at a movie theater and there was one time there was a party where only one kid showed up. We did much more than we usually did for the parties just to ensure those two kids had a good time. They got posters, promotional items, person tour of the projection booth (we weren't supposed to that anymore), refills on everything, all the employees sang them happy birthday. Like just as a worker its so hard to watch that kind of situation and not try to help

My friend and I were invited to a 18th birthday party for a kid we knew but not super well, we almost didn’t go because of that but we decided to stop by, we were the only two who showed up. He had the house all set up and we ended up just going mini golfing with his family because it was just the 2 of us. I used to work as a party pro/manager at BounceU and I cannot tell you how many parties i worked where no kids showed up! Its the most devasting thing to see in the childs eyes, but also the parents. They spend so much money and put so much time and effort into these birthday parties just for nobody to show up.

In primary school there was this one girl who had a birthday party, but she didn't have any friends. I was always nice to her (but we weren't friends) so she decided to only invite me. I knew I was the only one she invited and eventough we weren't friends, I still decided to go. In the end I did enjoy myself and it was quite nice and she was really happy that I came to her birthday party. Moral of the story, even if you aren't the best of friends with someone, please still go to their birthday party. It's a small thing you can do to make someone happy on their special day.

This happened to me when I was 16. It wasn't a birthday party, just an invite to a group of friends when my parents were away for the weekend. I got everything ready and....no one showed up. Not a single one. Turns up they were on their way and stumbled upon a house party of someone they knew and decided to go to that instead. That kinda happened to me when I was 16, too. I invited all these people yet only my best friend, my boyfriend & an old neighbor friend & his brother showed up. It was for my 16th birthday & my brother’s 21st birthday (he’s Autistic so he was just happy to go to Pizza Hut). It was at that moment that I realized those “friends” I invited weren’t my friends. Ever since then, when it’s my birthday, I take myself out or take my brother out.

I’m glad the community came through for her. When I was in grade school a peer invited everyone in the class to his birthday party and I was the only one who went from the school. The party was only his family and me. We weren’t great friends, but we were pals, and I was very honoured to be invited and made a point of arriving on time. His family were so excited that I was there and though I have really severe social anxiety, I enjoyed myself and we had a lot to talk about at school that week. One time in elementary school, I was invited to a classmate’s sleepover. She was only a few blocks away so I was able to go, but despite inviting the entire class, I was the only one to show. From there we became best friends until the day I had to move out, my last memory of her was holding a big container of cheese balls waving goodbye to me and my family with a big smile. She was always there, even during the process of my family moving, she’d be happy to hang out. Sadly haven’t been able to talk to her since that day but I hope she’s doing well:)

Same thing happened to my child. We invited around 40 people including every kid in her class. Planned it all. Had food and drinks for tons with little gifts they could take home. We made everything ourselves and was so adorable. 3 kids did show up thankfulky. 1 came later so was only 2 for most of it. Broke my child's heart. She had waited at the door for everyone to show up. And kept asking where they were. After that year I never planned for more than say 8. I knew all 40 wouldn't show so that's why we invited so many and I figured at least 15 or so would show. Just broke my heart for her. Now I try my best to reach out and get others to come and invite lots of family as well hoping for anyone with kids to show up. She's had a couple now with at least 10 kids which is nice but also a few with only 2 to 3. Bugs me when others RSVP and don't come when they didn't have an emergency or anything else going on. We threw my 7 year old shy brother a party and invited his whole class. No one came. And to top it off, a monsoon destroyed most of the decorations. I felt so bad so once the storm stopped, we went into the bouncy house and jumped together. He was so happy. I had a birthday party in elementary school once, and nobody came which truly made me forever hate birthdays and want to gather because I fear people wouldn't attend. I'm glad the mom was able to find supportive people in time. It truly means a lot to a child. I'm so happy the child ended up having people show up with gifts too last second! The community bond is so important. Till this day I despise having birthdays being 30 now, but for different reasons, ofc, I moved on, but I still won't forget the feeling of showing up excited to nothing but an empty table and wasted money on decoration and cake. That made me feel unwanted and ashamed throughout my elementary years about myself as a child. I become scared of people and had a fear that everyone around me were just pretending to be friends with me. The community showing up truly makes a huge difference, she will at lesat have good memories moving forward, hats off to the mom as well for quick thinking!

I feel like I see a story like this at least a few times every year. Never rely on classmate only parties. A lot of the times the kids aren't really friends and the parents have never even spoke to each other. Some parents RSVP just to pretend to be polite. If you don't have family or friends with kids to help celebrate, just take your child out for dinner/lunch and a fun activity.

I was not very familiar with their town so didn't dare take side streets. Michael normally recited every word with ads of all the shows he'd watched the night before. Suddenly I realized he was repeating street names and turns. I followed his directions and we arrived at his house the back way. His mom didn't even know he knew the way by memory. This happened to me when I was 16; of the 50 people who had said they were going to attend and that I thought were my “friends” only 4 showed up. We had enough food for everyone that said they would be there so we had to give everyone who did come lots of food to take home because there’s no way we could eat all that food that day. The same thing happened to me for my 9th birthday party. My family had just moved neighbourhoods, so I didn't really have any close friends as yet, and my birthday did happen to fall during the school holidays. But to have absolutely no-one bother to turn up, and not a single apology for why they couldn't make it or why they may have forgotten or anything, it just broke my heart and I have never wanted to have another birthday party ever again. Not even an 18th or 21st birthday party. I'll be turning 50 next year and I still don't want to throw myself a party, simply because of the pain and rejection I felt all those years ago. Some people just don't realise how much they affect others, even when they simply ignore others and act like they don't exist.

That's why they got the kids (parents) to confirm with an RSVP in advance. It's cruel for her "friends" to say they were attending then break that promise. I hope some flakes see this and realize how much harm they can cause when they break RSVPs. I'm so happy the community came through for this little girl! 🥰 I too had the same experience at 11 years old. (My mom ran down the street knocking on doors and inviting random kids to come) It was so traumatizing that I never wanted another party until I reached 30 and I made myself try again. That time it was successful. However, it scars you forever unfortunately. (I'm 68 and still hesitate about holding any get together for myself)

I understand what it feels like to have no one show up at your party. As a Broadway fan and aspiring actress for the stage I wanted a Broadway themed party when I was 9. I invited everyone in my grade and some other grade too. No one came. Unlike this lovely story, it was just me my mom and my grandpa. I stopped having parties after that. I am graduating high school in this year and I want a graduation party but I am scared it won’t turn out good. I pray this little girl has many more Birthday parties!

I am so happy to see that so many of the kids in the community showed up for the party to make it better for her. Unfortunately things like this even happen in adulthood. For my 28th birthday there was a reservation at a nice restaurant for myself and 8 others. As the date got closer and closer, people started to cancel with really no reason and by the time I got to the restaurant for the reservation, the dinner reservation that was supposed to be for 9 people ended up just being me. I was all dressed up and of course extremely disappointed, but no matter what I was still going to enjoy my favourite meal and celebrate myself. The restaurant staff were amazing and I could tell that they felt bad for me for being alone on my birthday and so they did their best to kind of keep my company. They ended up giving me way too much champagne and so I ended up getting very drunk, but I think that was their plan to try to get me to forget about the bad part. At the end of the night they wouldn't let me pay for my dinner and drinks even though it would have been a couple of hundred dollars and they walked me out to my cab to make sure that I got home safe. I still think of the kindness that restaurant staff showed me and ever since then I have made it a tradition to take myself to my favourite restaurant on my birthday and to celebrate myself and be happy. I do think it would be great if everyone had others to celebrate their birthday with, but if not, everyone should always celebrate themself. (I also buy myself a Christmas present every year and take myself out for Valentines Day)

Even though I got a boyfriend who buys me for birthday, Christmas, and Valentines, and though my son is from the most previous relationship with ex-cohabit, he buys me a Mother's Day present as well. Some of the things he selects himself, but never been disappointed by his selections. I still buy for myself ( as well buy for him and my son ). I am 47 and still buying myself stuffed animals. 😂😂😂😂😂. Well, Christmas, Valentines, and Mother's Day I do. But my most fave teddy is my boyfriend. And he treats me like a teddy.

@@theophilusconnor I love that! I learned a long time ago that even if we don’t have others to treat us, we should always treat ourself. I’ve spent most of my adult life on my own and so every so often I treat myself to what I call “me date days”. I treat myself to some of my favourite things. For me that’s usually a massage(low cost through a massage school), hair appointment and a nice meal out. Life can be tough sometimes and it’s important that we do things that make us happy, no matter how small they may be.

Judging by the comments, it seems like it happens often in US. Unimaginable in Germany. Ppl will tell you straight away that they don’t have time or another reason but never RSVP and not come. This really breaks a child's heart and you can see it in her face, her own classmates. Her mother was very inventive and saved the day thankfully. The fact that it was the little girl's classmates has caused hurt as yet and hopefully her parents will help her along to assimilate the experience.

Lesson learned for all of us!! Never invite anyone to a party unless you absolutely know them. Keep the invites to a minimum. Yes, even adults can still hurt from childhood and adulthood trauma from those who never really liked us. So happy their community came and gave her a positive birthday to remember!! 🥳

Except now most teachers make a rule where when a kid has a birthday party, they can't exclude anyone, they HAVE to invite the whole class. That's why one of my coworkers who has kids always has her kids keep the party on the down-low, only has them invite a few of their closest friends and sends the invites out through the mail instead of having her kids give them in class.

Wish we knew what the actual meaning was to why no one showed up. At 5 years old, how could she develop any bad friendships? Best option for a classroom friend party is to just have them in the actual classroom. That's what I did for my child until middle school. Then the parties became limited due to those middle school years, etc.

I saw a FB in my community about a mom having set a party for her little boy and fell on a date where none of his friends could attend. So she posted it on FB. I saw it and said to my wife that our daughter would enjoy meeting new friends. So we replied and said we were in. A few weeks later, we showed up, along with about a dozen other kids. None of them knew the birthday boy. All of us brought gifts and enjoyed our time celebrating the boy's birthday. The parents were thrilled. To see a bunch of kids who have never met, sitting together, eating pizza, and laughing is the best joy for any parent.

More like a show of the selfishness and superficiality of our current culture. People have no sense of commitment or responsibility anymore, but give them an emotional story to post about on their socials, and they'll drop everything to show up. I guarantee you that every one of the people who showed up at that party did it for the gram.

As a introvert kid my mom knew this was bound to happen at some point so she almost always used to meet with the parents of the few friends i had and try, develop a sort of relationship with them. She always said that its easy to say no to a stranger but doing that to the person who you personally know is kind of hard. My bfs parents at that time drove about 50 miles in traffic to come to my party at 9 pm....we all were waiting for them from like 7:30 and it was a blast. Im seriously amazed at what all she did for me back then, as an adult its near impossible for me to do the same for any future kids i have but im gonna give my all to make them have the childhood i was gifted with

This happened to me in middle school. I started calling friends asking if they were coming. Not only did no one show up but two girls orchestrated the whole thing so no one would come. I ended up getting apologies but it did scar me so much that I still tear up about it when I think on it as an adult over 30 years later.

so do I just from your telling it. it's emotional abuse, pure and simple. it's hell beings doing this kind of stuff because it destroys the basic minimum of trust between human beings. it destroys the idea that simple generosity and goodness suffice to produce goodness. it teaches us to never be good to people if you want to play it safe.

I am a school teacher and some years ago a colleague and I became aware of such a plot amongst our 7th graders. One mean girl circulated a letter telling the other girls to RSVP yes, but instructed them not to attend the party. We called in the mean girls' parents and their response was shocking! They supported their daughter's actions and commended her for being a good judge of "class". The birthday girl was delightful and without flaw, but the other children were terrified of the mean girl so they were too scared to cross her. I am certain this is what happened to you. One nasty piece of work dissuaded the others. There was nothing wrong with you. 24 years later, I still remember that child and her awful parents and get a sick taste in my mouth. She probably has had this effect on many people. She had no class at all, just money, but was too egotistical to know the difference.
