@@rosiejl2798 Why only in Norway??? How do we make this kind of downright EVIL illegal EVERYWHERE? To whom do we have to address our petitions? What _international_ agencies are able to do something about this, or at least spread enough awareness about how these poor dogs are artificially and intentiontionally created to suffer so that _everyone_ will have heard of them and be outraged? Is there already an official petition we can sign? I already knew that _some_ dog breeds bred for their unusual appearances are unhealthy & probably in a lot of pain because of how deformed their bodies are (e.g., bulldogs that can at least _walk_ on their own and a few British Spaniel breeds whose eyes bug out), but I didn't know pugs suffered as well; I know of at least two otherwise kindly-seeming people who _love_ pugs and collect them) as if flattening a dog's snout or making their eyes bulge out is an attractive "feature" that looks completely unnatural and unattractive to me, and even if I _did_ find their features, like an extra-curly tail that I just found out causes spinal problems in pugs, desirable, if I knew it was causing the animal to suffer, I definitely wouldn't want them. But at least those recognized breeds can _reproduce_ naturally as opposed to requiring "human" intervention, inbreeding, and cloning to keep them from going extinct as they should. If someone likes the look of a small flat-faced, pointy-eared (naturally, not _clipped_ to make them appear that way), exotic-eyed four-legged "companion" animal, there are WAY more CATS in shelters who will never be adopted! There's a miniature Boston terrier next door to us whose face is pretty flat with large eyes that our Australian Cattle Dog kept barking at nonstop through the fence when our neighbor first got him--and later had his tail cut off! She was apparently trying to scare him away/call our attention to the intruder because we don't want cats in our yard killing all our wildlife, and, ACDs (red or blue "heelers") are very intelligent herding dogs. (There's a whole ACD Rescue Association in America because they're bred partially from dingoes for the purpose of herding cattle on giant cattle stations in the Australian outback, being able to run about 30 miles a day, & make independent decisions based on their training. So, although they're _very_ loyal to their owners, they're such "buddy dogs" that they often get nicknamed "velcro" dogs because they want to be with their owner 24/7, are extremely territorial/protective ... & definitely _not_ for someone who just wants an affectionate pet because they're strong-willed & able to outsmart you if you're inexperienced with the amount of time & effort it takes to train them and _keep_ them trained, and if anyone comes to the door, their territorial dingo instincts take over, they'll race there before you can get to the door barking, growling, & snarling like a wild animal, and will _attack_ anyone they don't already know; in fact, even if it's their _owner_ they hear coming home, they'll assume it's an intruder and prepare to attack, so you can _never_ let your guard down around them, like _I_ did about a month ago when my husband--"HER" human/the "alpha" in our pack--went back Down Under for two weeks leaving her alone with me for the first time in her life--she's about to turn 10--and everything went fine for the first week, but the following week, I needed to give her some chewable medication that she normally eats like it's a treat, but she was in a bad mood that morning when I held out her chewable and almost bit my finger off--biting through the top _and_ bottom of my finger, which swelled up like a balloon & it was ~2 weeks before I could _bend_ it again, while I was first able to remove the bandage this past week, the wound is _still_ healing, & it's back to its normal size after a course of amoxicillin I was prescribed at Urgent Care, but it still aches _and_ now I have "trigger finger" in the first joint! Afterwards I made sure she knew she'd "hurt" me--my husband, who's had ACDs/"heelers," e.g., "Bluey," is amazed by how many words she understands & the different tricks I taught her to do for specific treats since I'm disabled & spend more time with her than _he_ does, so I keep her mind occupied--she even understands abstract concepts like time! So I tried to get her to stop barking at our new flat-faced, pointy-eared neighbor when my husband said she probably thinks he's a _cat_ & was just doing her duty. So after she came inside so I could get her attention, I said to her that our new "neighbor" is NOT a cat; he's a _dog_ like her & the labradoodle next door she was having a little romance with through the fence. And the very next time she saw him, they made friends through the fence, they started racing up & down the fence together, she forgot all about her labradoodle friend, & _now_ the only time she barks at them is if she hears them outside, wanting to go out & see them & barking like it's a greeting! As soon as she gets out there with them, they all quiet down, & she goes back to her habit of barking _once_ when she wants to come in! So apparently she really _did_ think he was a cat & was trying to scare him away--while she loves to watch the birds coming to the birdbath & eating from the feeder, the chipmunks in the hedge, and the toads that sometimes come out of our toad house at night--AND she gently herds my cockatiels because she knows they're sentient & I used the teachable moments when _she_ got hurt--after a run-in with a fox she tried to befriend, mistaking it for a dog & getting bitten--to teach her empathy! She also acted chastened after showed her my bloody hand, told her that she "HURT" me, & locked her in her crate for a few hours while I was at Ugent Care & showed/told her that I had to take "medicine" because of the "hurt" she gave me.) Sorry for the TMI, but when our dog, who loves other dogs, actually mistakes another dog for a CAT, you _know_ that dog was bred not to look like a dog anymore! Then again, I doubt anyone who wants a short-lived, mangled collector's-item that can barely _move_ without their help & is no doubt suffering in chronic pain for a "pet" would want an independent animal like a cat. The only "bright" side for these made-to-order dogs whose breeders & collectors are the monstrous "bullies" (if there can BE a bright side) is that they only live for 3-5 years.😢

I'm a vet nurse from Aotearoa, NZ. We never help with artificial insemination for breeders. It violates the 5 freedoms of animal welfare to create a dog that cannot naturally breed & cannot live comfortably. That's the first problem right there.
@Trash_Cat215 ай бұрын
Exactly that practice needs to change.
@OakwiseBecoming5 ай бұрын
I agree with the point about not inseminating a dog that can’t reproduce naturally. However, I think artificial insemination is a kinder way to breed than having a female dog accosted and R-worded by a stud dog she’s only just met. I am doing careful breeding from my genetically tested healthy GSDs which are family pets. Mother and father live together and know each other. I learned that there is a NEED for small scale family home breeders so buyers can buy from loved and cared for litters that live in the home, avoiding commercial big breeders and farms. It’s not wrong to make a little money off a litter but I don’t trust people making their full living off it. They start compromising animal welfare for profit. We kept a female puppy and will have a couple litters off her in future. But we don’t feel comfortable having her traumatized by being R-worded by a male stud she doesn’t know and will terrify her. It’s because I LOVE my dogs and we brought so much JOY to families with our first litter, and they had peace of mind buying from someone who cared so much raising up pups from newborn to 8 weeks, that I think breeding with my care, love, and ethical philosophy are NEEDED. But until we can take on another male, I feel better artificially inseminating rather than terrifying and hurting her through a stud.

It took a while but once Ball Python owners and breeders realized the Spider pattern led to horrible nuerological disorders, they stopped buying them and breeders stopped raising them. Well mostly, obviously when theres money to be made, some rat is going to breed them and sell them to careless/clueless owners. POINT BEING: There isn't a SPIDER SNAKE EXPOOOO where people gather to show off their disabled snakes and there isn't a massive network of people trying to make the snakes even worse. And that's for ball pythons, the standard hollywood "giant monster anaconda", ask around and every other person thinks they're evil. How did we let this happen to dogs?!
@Corgisaurus-Rex5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, many people do still breed spider ball pythons. They've also mixed them into other strains that go by different names, so, without research, buying an uncommon morph can be a potential landmine. I've gone to expos and quietly pointed out to friends and family when a python is a spider morph showing the typical neurological issues. Same goes for enigma and lemon frost leopard geckos. This stuff does still happen a lot, but you don't hear about them outside of reptile hobbyist circles because other people 1) don't know about it or 2) don't care. At least in the US, reptile welfare is not as much of a hot topic to the general public as dog welfare. EDIT: I decided to check on morphmarket and, at the time of editing this comment, there are 1178 ball pythons being sold on that site in the US and Canada with the "spider" trait. Just to show how prevalent it still is.

my hair stylist got a french bulldog, and it quite literally came with a 6 month warranty. if the dog died within 6 months, they'd give her another for free. and yes, the first one did pass away within 6 months. it is so messed up that an animal is being treated like a fucking iphone or something. a warranty? because they knew it was likely to die from having so many medical issues due to excessive breeding?? insane
@Corgisaurus-Rex5 ай бұрын
Depends on the nature of the warranty. The warranty is suppose to be the breeder standing behind the quality of their dog. If it has any medical issues related to genetics, then the breeder with take the dog back and replace it (with proof from a reputable vet). Keep in mind, that is an expensive proposition for a breeder. They could wind up with the medical expenses for the returned dog on top of losing out of a sale if that dog is replaced by another of their dogs. The warranty is the breeder saying that they're only willing to have that arrangement for the 6 months that you have that dog. Beyond that, anything that happens is on the new owner. The way I view it, the longer that warranty, the better. It shows that the breeder is so confident in the genetics of that dog that they don't anticipate you having any genetic-related health issues in that length of time. While shopping around myself, I've seen warranties range from 6 months to the lifetime of the dog. It varies by breed and breeder.

...what bothers me most is that they act like it's the same dog when it literally isn't? My rescue girl is 11 now, she's very fit and healthy but I'm already petrified of losing her some day. And if that happened, how would cloning her help?! That's not my dog, not my friend who spend all those years with me, helped me through so many dark times and wound her way straight into the hearts of so many people around me. That dog was unique. Another dog might be of a similar phenotype or even identical genotype, but it would never be her again.
@FrankAaron5 ай бұрын
@exotherm42 well that kinda gets into the (un)nature/nurture question, right? If you clone your dog while it's still alive and raised the clone in the same environment as your dog, you might significantly increase the odds of the clone adopting a similar personality and mannerisms from the source to go along with the identical looks. And maybe if you squint just right, you could trick yourself into believing that your dog never actually passed.
@MossyOpossumDog5 ай бұрын
Also, on top of that most cloning agencies don't just produce one puppy when they are cloning a dog. Usually it is a whole litter, then they pick the most "perfect" one and the rest are destroyed :( You can buy all the puppies, but most people only want one clone, so the rest get euth'ed because they can't be rehomed due to a contract. @TakkuriHimare5 ай бұрын
The cropping and docking on pits came from when they were bred as fighting dogs so they’d last longer and not be done in by a bite to a sensitive area. For guard breeds like Dobermans it’s traditionally done as a counter to humans trying to grab the dogs and pull them off of themselves if attacked by one. It’s not really necessary in pet homes for obvious reasons, though some breeds with long tails like dobies can get “happy tail” where they cause traumatic damage to their tails by literally wagging too hard too close to a wall and not being able to make themselves stop when it hurts. Breeds prone to happy tail will often be docked while they’re puppies because it’s a less dangerous surgery and the dogs adapt much better than if they have to have them amputated later, but I’m not generally a fan. One of my rescue mutts looks like she had happy tail when she was younger since her tail is a little crooked and there’s a big lump in the middle like the bones were broken and healed improperly. I’m glad she got to keep her tail, but she still hits obstacles with it VERY hard and I always worry she’s going to hurt it again. Anyway just came to say there are a lot of good dog breeders out there, but unfortunately they get drowned out by all the backyard breeders producing genetic nightmares and following “trendy” designer mutts like doodles and merles. I’ve always got shelter/foster dogs so I don’t see myself going to a breeder unless I need a good working breed, but I will say since my dogs came out of bad situations they are a lot harder than a mentally sound pup would be. I can see mine being a lot for a first time owner to deal with, and unfortunately shelters are so desperate these days they often can omit certain behavioral details.

I used to work for a vet, only quit this year after having a baby, and we had a 9 week “pocket bully” come in with absolute horrible skin issues. The owners were COMPLETELY unprepared for the cost of care that poor baby was gonna entail. It kills me seeing backyard breeders making these generic nightmares.

As someone who works with dogs, let me just say this to future first time dog owners: Do not get a dog for aesthetic reasons. You will not have a fun time raising it. If you’re going to get a specific breed, do your research. Not just a single google search, take your time to make sure this is the breed you want and can handle. Ask your breeder for the medical information about both puppies parents. If there is a hereditary condition, you need to know right away so you can be prepared to deal with it. If you’re going to get a dog with a bunch of obvious physical deformities, be prepared to pay for it for the rest of the dogs life. These are living creatures that need someone who is willing to do everything they can to ensure they live a long and healthy life( as long as these inbreed dogs can anyway)If you are not willing to do that, then don’t get a dog.
@Schmidty1305 ай бұрын
This 100%! People don’t do enough research for any dog they get usually, rescue or when going to a breeder. It’s how we end up with so many dogs in shelters. These “exotic” breeders make money cause they know people won’t do the research and buy the dog cause it looks cute.

I forgot to add this as a professional bather: get your dog acclimated to bathing when they are young. Especially if you have a long haired breed that needs haircuts. I cannot tell you how many older dogs I get who have never had a bath in their life. Sometimes they’re good and other times they are so anxious and scared, they are fighting and biting everything. I’ve had dogs freak out with just water being sprayed on them.
@Anonymousaggro5 ай бұрын
As somebody who has two corgis, I really wish people would do this more. See so many people get high energy working or herding dogs based off of their looks alone and end up giving them up because they didn't do the research and can't handle their energy.
@OncleClara5 ай бұрын
I see so many people on Reddit in the dog (and cat) subs that want a specific breed because of its looks but don’t want to learn anything about the breed characteristics. For eg they’ll post in the Samoyed subreddit about how cute they are but don’t want the dog to be too high energy and high maintenance. Like a Samoyed is one of the highest maintenance dogs! They’re super high energy, require lots of training and walking, and need a lot of grooming. Or they want a British Shorthair cat that loves snuggles but only in a specific colour, completely ignoring that BSH’s are known for being more aloof. They’ll sit happily next to you, enjoy being stroked, and follow you about but they’re not lap cats. People don’t want a pet with its own personality and quirks - they want a toy or an accessory. It’s so sad. 😢

My mom was a groomer for a breeder. The conditions were horrible. up to 4 dogs in tiny kennels, all with diseases, missing teeth, and damaged tracheas. the breeder was a jehovas witness and went on her mission trip, dumping all the dogs on her. my mother loves dogs with all her heart, so she did her best to take care of them. it wasn't possible. my mom did her very hardest to make sure they got enough exercise, playtime, love, baths, food and water. but there just wasn't enough resources. you must dedicate ALL your time to take care of them, and still it won't ever be enough for the animals. It's very expensive and time consuming to take care of a ton of dogs even on a basic level, and sales are few and far between when you don't sell to other breeders (my mom wanted to take care of them and sell them to real homes). even if you have the most innocent and righteous intentions, it just isn't possible to breed ethically. pups deserve more.
@Corgisaurus-Rex5 ай бұрын
Ethical breeders cover that cost by selling their dogs for a lot and dedicating most of their time to those dogs. They also only keep a few at a time and try not to overwhelm themselves. Someone who had dogs dumped on them is not a 1-to-1 comparison for a breeder who has done their research, made preparations, and even completed an apprenticeship under another, more experienced breeder.
@dx.feelgood58255 ай бұрын
@@Corgisaurus-RexI’ve also heard of ethical breeders training their puppies. The guy we got our bully from had the puppies house trained, taught them various tricks, made sure they could sleep in a kennel and be comfortable, etc. he also wouldn’t sell them until they were a couple months old and didn’t need their mama anymore and could handle themselves. They were very affectionate and not afraid of people at all either. Very healthy dogs. Unfortunately, extremely rare thing in the world of dog breeders.
@FukaiKokoro5 ай бұрын
It's totally possible to breed ethically. Ethical breeders have contracts that you call and return the dog to them before the shelter. There's also a breeder in Europe who's trying to lengthen the snout of Frenchies. We need the good breeders in the world

@Corgisaurus-Rex5 ай бұрын
It may depend on the vet. For general care, a vet more than likely isn't going to turn the dog away because of the breed (there may be exceptions with "aggressive" breeds). If the dog needs care, they'll do what they can. However, for breeding them, they could be doing their own shady practices. Wouldn't be surprising. Some people dock tails and crop ears at home with no medical training, so doing anything else wouldn't surprise me.

Bulldogs/pitbulls/etc are wonderful but please don't support jackasses like these guys, you're just lining their pockets so they can keep churning out dogs for profit.

As someone who's worked with dogs for several years, the horrors that breeders have created make me want to quit altogether. Creating the unhealthiest dogs possible for thousands of dollars when there are thousands of dogs in shelters is so heartbreaking to think about. @shiruvuiaanimak14855 ай бұрын
Inbreeding in reptiles is a lot different than mammals, it takes many more generations to create any defects. You can inbreed quite a few times with no effects.

If you really want to though, there are so many shelters and sanctuaries with reptiles.. adopt one. It is insane, so please do yourself and the animals a favor and don't support it further. I regret that I have been a part of it on the regular.
