Mantas has a U shaped piece the attached to the bolt of the roller and will help keep the anchor in place. Hope that helps.. you can probably get one made for your pulpit specifically rather inexpensively

Great idea - will have to take a look! For now, we've cruised some pretty rough days and it stayed very well without any added system. Will probably keep it in mind and if we do something - your suggestion seems to be the best way!

There is also a guy named Don Green who machines/turns custom bow rollers and other custom rigging blocks and hardware. His company is called MeriMarine and they are very reasonable in their pricing. He's a small one-man shop and has a low overhead.

The V-shaped brace that Mantus sells works really well to stabilize the Mantus in a bow roller although the price is a bit high -like $100 or so. We have one that we bought way back 5+ years ago when we bought the whole Mantus setup at a boat show. Greg gave us a super deal. Prices have gone up a bit since then. To further stabilize our M1 in the early-model Mantus bow roller we have a 1/4' line tied to the base of the bow pulpit that we run around the roll bar and then back to a small cleat I installed next to the anchor locker door. That really holds the anchor securely and is easy to loop through the rollbar and back when are raising anchor.

Mantus anchors are really nice. FYI when you are anchoring stop completely (which it looks like you did) deploy they anchor until you think it has hit bottom, then back up very slowly just enough to lay your chain out a bit, otherwise it will be in a big pile. It didn’t look like you were moving when you were rolling out the chain (but maybe you were.) Then back down slowly, then after it grabs more pressure. Congratulations on the new anchor!

Thanks Rebecca! I don't think we did that in this video but I've been making it a point since then - thanks for the tips! We've had 3 weeks of anchoring and it has been fantastic so far - really a huge change in cruising QOL!

We have a 41’ trawler and just discovered your channel and really enjoy your videos. One comment I have is your MT is 17k pounds and 34’, both Rocna and Mantus selection guides seem to indicate you would be good with a 44 lb anchor. Many people upsize but I think one upsize for you would’ve been to a 55 lb anchor so your choice of a 65 is likely overkill. One drawback of upsizing too far is significant extra stress on the windlass motor. Just my two cents…

Love Mantus products! We have a 32’ day boat. Replaced the factory stainless plow anchor (jewelry). It was beautiful but useless - flopped on its side continuously. 25lb M1 on the windlass & an 8lb M1 stern anchor when needed at the sandbar. Perfect setup.

Glad you upgraded to a better anchor! It should solve your anchoring problems. Heads up though - that rubber strap on your bridle can eventually break. You might want to have a spare on board or better yet, switch to soft shackles (make sure they are sized for boats). Here’s to sound sleeping! :)

You may have learned this by now, but we are just now watching your videos. Up to this point you have scared us to death with your anchoring techniques. Once the anchor is set, slowly back the boat until the anchor chain is taught, then increase the RPMs on the boat until you hit 2000. Hold it there until you are sure the boat is not moving and the anchor is not dragging. If its dragging, you will see the chain chattering. It it holds tight, you and everyone around you will sleep good for the night.
@SchoandJo Жыл бұрын
Thanks Sandy! Yes, and that's good advice. The only piece that I'd add is that 2000 RPMs is boat-specific. We typically went a few hundred over idle, which was around 1100, if we max RPM'd we'd put undo stress on our ground tackle and engine. We did increase RPM further though if a storm was forecasted. Cheers!

Adding a marker to the chain so you know when the anchor is at the surface is helpful. I like to start the mark when the shackle is at the surface. The visual is helpful for whoever is on deck and whoever is on flybridge. You may need to add a bail to hold the anchor in place. Happy travels.

Remember that in very soft mud that the Mantus likes to dive DEEP. We have had ours dive over 10-feet below the bottom which will seriously effect your scope. In soft mud we never go less than 7:1 and that is including adding plenty of burial depth to the depth of the water + maximum tides expected + your freeboard. Even when the Mantus dives DEEP it comes up well straight up after it trips. Just go slow and let the boat's boyancy slowly chug it up. Snug it, let it rise a bit, snug it, rise, repeat. You did well tossing out that old swivel. The Mantus swivel is one of the few that are not a weak link or subject to dangerous side-loading. The Mantus bridle is great. The longer the bridle the better and the closer the bow chocks are to the cleats the better to minimize movement due to stretch.
@SchoandJo3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, Barry, regarding soft mud - we will keep an eye on it! You're actually the second person to tell us about the engineering of the swivel, its awesome! So far we've been anchoring out for roughly 1 month and it has been fantastic. Tomorrow we have ~30kts gusting in Charleston so it will be another solid test - but we have been building solid anchor faith!
@svbarryduckworth6283 жыл бұрын
Be careful in Charleston. The anchorage across from the mega dock is infamous for eating anchors the bottom is so foul. We've stayed there a couple of times and never had an issue but we know people who lost their anchor there.

AGNiS = A Good Nights Sleep! Did you purchase the Mantus, or are you guys now getting sponsorships? I think I saw you using both a bridle and a chain snubber, what's the thought process there?
@SchoandJo3 жыл бұрын
Amen on AGNIS! Mantus is amazing and helped us with the purchase but it was still significantly our dough. We would love to work with them in the future because this anchor set up has been AMAZING. Yep - that's our set up with the snubber and bridle mainly for two reasons. The snubber allows us to quickly take pressure off our windlass when we are underway or setting the anchor by backing down. It isn't that giving though, so before we used our bridle it didn't really soften any yanks on our anchor at night. That's where the bridle comes in, it really softens any pulls or yanks after we've set the anchor - keeping our "Good Nights Sleep" set. Then we just through the snubber on afterwards because why not 😁

Half your problem is you dont seem to know how to drop and set an anchor like most Loopers I see in Florida. You dont just drop it, dish out a bunch of rode and hope for the best. That explains why your CQR was dragging in perfect low wind conditions. Loopers should be required to take an anchoring class before coming to Florida. Im tired of the clueless Loopers dragging into me.
@SchoandJo2 жыл бұрын
You’ll have to watch our evolution of learning how to anchor. It’s over multiple videos - but even with the process now the CQR still drug. It’s just not as good in as many bottom conditions as the Mantus. While anchoring strategy is important, the anchor and size is also important. Since getting this anchor and bridle set up, we haven’t drug once in almost a year using it. Compared to our CQR it’s night and day. You shouldn’t loop all loopers together, everyone is on their own boating journey and support and kindness are what we all need!
