Yes I recently was fitted for a DF3 armlock putter from LAB. I have used it for several rounds and find that I am much more consistent with getting the ball rolling on my line. My putts per hole have dropped from 1.8 to just under 1.7. I started with left hand low because that felt natural.

I have a leftie arm lock from L.A.B since last summer and I love this putter! I have speed control down cold... 3 putts are almost never... and most of my 1 putts outside of 10 feet are burning the edges for a tap-in at worst. Last week I picked up my old Odyssey mallet to see how the stroke felt.... and I can't even make a decent stroke with it....so there will be no turning back.

I’ve just been fitted for an Sik armlock putter. Its taking some getting use to. Much easier on short putts but struggling on long putts, at the moment. Think it’s because I’m not use to just rocking the shoulders, I was a little handsy. The long putts are coming up short, but I’ve only had it out on the course for 2 rounds

That's one of the most impressive things about the LAB putter we were sent. It is built and drilled specifically for the arm lock style vs just taking a regular head and bending the shaft. What type of improvements have you noticed since arm locking?

Devise a study similar to what Pelz did many years ago. Putts of all length and break. I personally think the armlock technique improves puts of 3 - 8 feet more than longer ones. Those are the ones most of us think we SHOULD make and tend to mis-read or miss-hit. I think there is a learning curve, like most athletic activities, but it is much steeper because of fewer variables. Probably after about 100 putts, most experienced golfers will have figured it out and further improvement in technique will be incremental. This leaves "only" reading greens for the golfer to master. This may be easier also since fewer things to worry about.

I tried the arm-lock putter last year. For 2 weeks playing with the arm-lock about 3x/week, I putted "lights-out" and made way more putts than my normal. But then in the 3rd week I began having a real problem with knowing whether my putter face was actually on the correct line to the hole. And it got worse. I gave up the arm-lock in week four and have not returned to the arm-lock. Male, age 75, hcp about 10.

Dave Pelz says that putting is mostly face angle (and a little path). The tendency to "roll" the hands by twisting the wrists is the major cause of face angle change during the stroke. All methods strive to limit face angle change but if you can hold your putter behind the ball and "roll" your hands (wrists) then you can change the face angle at impact. I use a large grip (stroke saver) face balanced putter with the trail hand low. Rotate the lead (top) hand as far closed as it can go and grip the putter. Rotate the trail (bottom) hand as far closed as it can go and grip the putter. From above, you will see all the knuckles and the backs of both hands. Basically, both hands are trying to open and close the putter face at the same time. Try as you might, you cannot get that putter face to budge off of the face angle that is square to the target. Putting on your selected line becomes really easy as the putter face cannot change its face angle during the stroke. Give it a try, it works for me. :)

Even if this is "anchoring" it should have never been banned from golf. Putting is very different from all other aspects of the game. The USGA got this rule wrong. They only changed it because Tiger came out against anchoring. The only thing they can do is limit grip length at this point.

If you are using a Standard putter that is not designed necessarily for wrist lock, do you have to adjust where you hit the ball? It would seem like you would de loft the club a bit and hit the ball into the ground if you positioned the ball in the middle of your stance

I had not seen your video in advance and was experimenting on course practice with my Odyssey Works Putter (traditional length). I’ve been struggling with face control and subsequently missing too many 3 to 6 foot putts. Experimenting with the armlock approach and a placing ball in stance approx 2-balls forward produced immediate improvement in both the roll of the putt and staying on line. Felt a noticeable feel and control of club face. I realize I was self teaching and I’m curious to see using a manufactured arm- lock will be even better. For me, even if the arm lock is banned in competition the principles still can be used with other putters. I’d look for a longer shaft if that is the case. Thanks guys for this info!,

I have been using arm lock since the Belly Putters were banned. I was very inconsistent with std putters....... 3 and 4 putts if outside 12 feet and switched to the Broom style, with ASAP results. With that style banned, I fortunately read a Dave Peltz article indicating not to throw them away, just cut them to be below the elbow joint and they would be legal. Also, he indicated that 1 in 10 who have speed control issues need to look at the hole and putt to the hole, factoring in needed break vs. looking at the ball. This blew my putting up ASAP again ( for the better). Also leaving in the pin added even more success. There is no way I can call this anchoring. It is different from the belly putter creating a "traped pendulum" at my chest. In the last few weeks, I have won the longest putt on 3 different holes (1 was 46 feet). The game plays faster and is more fun when your putting better. Life is about change, no one is stopping anyone from trying this......let the general population keep enjoying better golf. A perfect example is the high jump.......we would still all be doing the"Texas Roll" instead of the "FosburyFlop" if we would not embrace the change. Rich S. PS Thanks AMG for all the great work and bring down science to the application level.

I'm a RH'd golfer/putter and putt 'left hand down' which enables a 'wrist lock' style of grip. I find is has a similar effect to an arm-lock in that my left wrist angles do not (noticeably) change throughout the stroke. Granted, I don't have gears to measure it but I can clearly see movement in the angles when I putt with a classic reverse overlap grip compared to the left hand down. Since the butt end of the putter is 'locked' against my wrist, one would have to think it has the same advantage as locking against the arm. Will that too be banned then? Anchoring should not have been banned in any case. It is neither contrary to the spirit of the game nor is it an 'unfair advantage' as all players had access to the equipment. Arm-lock putters/putting should definitely NOT be banned. I don't believe it is even 'anchoring' as the butt end of the putter is moving back and forth. And just like the 'broom stick' putters, all players have access to arm-lock putters so there is no unfair advantage either. Maybe it would be simpler if the USGA made a rule that all putts had to be made with a "wobbly stroke", or a "block of wood at the end of a string".

I bought a Lab putter however it’s the traditional style, I wonder how the numbers would stack up against your spider vs. lap putter? I tried one arm putting and for reason I couldn’t get it to work for me, I could never get the shaft to rest conformably against my lead arm! Now I see Phil and Matt Kutcher having there one arm putter shaft lean against their back arm. To me I didn’t see a issues with the long putter being anchored against your upper chest, so I don’t an issue with this either. If these two styles are no legal then isn’t the other legal, e.g. Claw, left arm low, or another style that eliminate the use of both hands? The only time this became an issue is when someone won starting winning with these anchoring styles.

It's not anchoring imo because its not attached to the body the arms are still freely moving. I came to the decision a long time ago that it is the best putting method for removing error in the stroke. Exactly why imo Bryson uses it and is probably the best putter on the planet right now!

It's an interesting subject. If anchoring a long putters is banned, I think arm locking is just as questionable . A putter should be the shortest club in the bag held with 2 hands, no anchoring.

I love all your videos. And, as a specialist putting coach even more this 'investigation'. What I don't get, why didn't you calibrate the SAM before the arm lock strokes? It affects static aim, which, affects tendency. So you're not able to compare the two styles of putting now. About the angles. I agree an armlock putter eliminates flexion and extension, but what about feel? By throwing a ball your wrist is hinging as well. It's a subconsciousness part of your stroke. Maybe you should run a test at longer putts. See what happens with distance control. Looking forward to your comments, and of course, the next videos. As well swing.

I have a standard putter and don't use armlock...BUT...I could never understand why anchoring was banned. Did it help? Well obviously for some, but I could never make it work. And what if it did...did they ban Gene Sarazen's sand wedge...or big-headed drivers...or Bryson's one-size clubs?! Did it 'take the skill away'? Well, see answer to the first question - imho anchoring requires its own skill set. Of all the technology and technique improvements over the last 30 years, anchoring is one of the least obviously potent (how many pros ever used it - surely the acid test?), yet that's the one they ban. Strange.

I’m trying to determine if it was the arm lock putter itself that caused the improvement or was it because it allowed a more structured “V” of the arms? Could one use a traditional putter while maintaining a structured “V” and achieve similar results? Thanks for the great content.
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 3 жыл бұрын
We had the same same thought too. We did the same test trying to maintain the V. While it felt the same to me during the stroke, the measured numbers showed it to be much closer to the traditional style than the arm lock. The feel was very similar, but the data wasn't.

@@ChuckEvansGolf we’ve been able to test 4 different manufacturers so far with arm locking. The same mechanical as has been there with all. The biggest variable has been aim. I’ve personally found the LAB to be the easiest to aim so far, and it does have a very “moving on rails” feel.

This is a Big Deal!!! I have always been a below average putter My direction and green reading is has been good. Some times when it gets crazy way long or short. I putt conventionally right had low. On my back stroke wrist break back. On the forward stroke the wrist break forward. I don't feel it but everyone sees it. Way to wristy. I have had the some problem for years. I average 33-34 putts per round with two 3 putts. I still shoot in the low 80's. I think the arm lock will be the answer. Thank you.

Whatever works I always say, I think holding or bracing the putter against the arm is just fine, the arms are both moving together in the stroke so to me the grip is not anchored to your body, so to speak. The USGA should backoff, has nothing to do with overpowering the courses.

As for Arm-Lock - YES! I’d love to try it/use it but it IS anchoring and a ban will soon follow. As your video demonstrates conclusively, it does in fact give you a mechanical advantage. Sure, it’s available for everybody to use but it’s not the method of putting intended in the tradition sense of the game ( holding the grip in your hands, and slapping it in the hole ).

Well still not banned nor should be. The putter is clearly not anchored as the grip moves with the lead arm. This is not dissimilar to a conventional putter. This method really only takes out the wrist movement. I've just converted to a Sik putter now in 2023 and it seems to help me with my otherwise bad putting. It does not make me a better putter than the good putters at my club. I can't see why all these testers talk about anchoring and banning. The game is hard enough. What about banning graphite shafts, titanium driver heads and move back to hickory shafts. It is just part of a natural progression. If it is such an advantage there is nothing stopping all golfers using them.

love the channel and most of your analysis but i think this one has missed the mark. you need to compare a traditional LAB putter to an arm lock lAB putter before you credit all the improvement seen here to simply arm locking-- there is a lot of technology in all LAB putters that will help you square the face and you cannot attribute all the gains here to arm locking. two variables changed in this comparison. scientifically you cannot say this os due to arm lock putting or LAB putter -- this experimant does NOT actually give an answer to the question because you did not control all variables except arm locking. if you tested it against a traditional length LAB putter - the arm lock could be better or worse- or the same-- you still do not know. please do another to see whether or not arm locking matters-- i firmly believe the LAB putter beats the spider arm lock or no arm lock.

@@AthleticMotionGolf yes I watched the whole video. It's only the wrist hinge you can really take from this experiment. The technology on the lab putter significantly outweighs the spider so the data on the putting machine can't be compared. Nonetheless, great video, would have loved to seen it with the same type of putter being compared.
