The dialogue wheel was a flaw in F4 but at least each line was well written(including the sarcastic lines), and at least you can be aggressive with a lot of lines throughout the game. Actually a lot were completely cold. DA4 sounds like it was written by a college freshman with a lot of issues.

I was going to say "I understand that not every hostile dialogue option needs to exist", but this is the same game series with Dragon Age: Origins, a game where you could literally kill off every one of your companions, insult all of them in different ways, KILL A CHILD, or sleep with his paralyses demon if you go the mage route. Normally you let one of your mage companions or allies enter into his dream to free him, but if you are a mage you can volunteer the bootleg exorcism yourself. And instead of banishing the demon you can make a deal with it to give you power or literally fuck the demoness in exchange for being allowed to possess the child and just pretending to be banished.

The biggest difference between them is that in Origins, thanks to persuasion, it is possible to finish quests in different ways without fighting and shape the story, while in Veilguard and the previous 2 and 3 games, all we did was kill creatures. Origins is the only Dragon Age game that really allows you to role-play.

I wouldn't say that's entirely true. For all its faults, DA2 got a lot right. I remember there being quite a number of ways for some questlines and cumulative quest chains to play out across multiple acts. It was smaller in scope, lots of recycled locations, sure, but was probs the most complex in terms of stories and narrative in some ways I think.

Characters like Shepherd and Geralt basically have 75% of their personalities pre-established, so the choices you DO get are just fine tuning them to your liking and pushing them in a certain direction in the story. However, you NEED plenty of options when the protagonist is a blank slate (DAO, BG3, etc). That's the key difference that Western AAA devs are beginning to forget.

The reason why is because they replaced what would have been the Aggressive choice on the dialogue wheel in previous Dragon Age titles with the Stoic choice in Veilguard. Why? Well it was made by basically two different companies since the old Bioware has basically been completely replaced at this point, Origins was made with passion and the goal to make a great game and veilguard has been made due to greed and the desire to preach and talk down to people.

If you never played Dragon Age : Origin, try it. It's one of the best crpg i've ever played, it has compelling story and deeply written characters. And its expension awakening is the icing on the cake.

This is so funny. "Rook" sounds like that squire from Game of Thrones. Also, OG Dragon Age wasn't messing around. I love how you can basically be an evil bastard throughout that entire game and still end up a hero at the end. The writing perfectly encapsulates this. That's the thing, the game is deceptively well made where someone new to the series or fairly new to RPGs won't find too much wrong with it. From a technical and gameplay standpoint it's solid enough for an ARPG, however from a writing standpoint it is quite lacking compared to other games. Unfortunately good writing tends be subjective at times and isn't really something that everyone can agree upon.

In Dragon Age:Origins you could do some really deplorable stuff like: selling your cousin to creepy noble who kidnapped her, your own bride and other elven women to assault. Leaving entire village to be killed by army of undead until it became a ghost town. Force a mother to kill her own child/kill said child yourself while she is begging you not to only so you knock her out/sell said kid's soul to a literal demon for some demon punpun. Slaughter entire Dalish clan with the pack of werewolves. I could go on and on about all the messed up things you are allowed to do in this game because this game allowed you to truly ROLEPLAY. Meanwhile, the most evil thing you can do in this 9/10 masterpiece rated by IGN is misgender someone.

​@@Keira_Blackstonethat's a 3 week old comment, but dei did have an influence on why the game came bad to begin with: bad corporate practices, including hiring people on the basis of their "identity"/color, rather than talent. It's not technically a nepotism, but the effect is the same. That's the reason why the writing is so bad, the rest of the factors - corporate censorship to make the game bland and safe for a wider audience, blind trend chasing with gameplay and presentation, toxic atmosphere at workplace - all of that was present in Inquisition days and even earlier, but they were still able to keep the quality as high as possible because people working on it clearly had higher standards and some experience to work with certain constraints. At least that's how I see it. I think, if it wasn't for dei, we'd get another Inquisition.
