The Seventy 80 sounded better to me in all of the different tones. The Vintage 30 sounded like it was muffled when on the higher gain settings. I wonder if that's because its a lower wattage speaker and it was starting to distort. I'm listening through mid-focused headphones as well. Maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know.

From Leo: I have heard trash talk about Seventy/80 speakers for years. I am generally a very clean player I think Seventy/80 are fine and actually like them better for the clean and slightly over driven tones. My favorite speakers for jazz are still the Eminence Cannabis Rex. Very warm and smooth.

The seventy eighty is very flat speaker, it really gives a very “uncolored” sound, just reproducing what the amp sends to it. Perfect for glassy cleans and slight, cutting crunch. The problem I have with it is that I usually play stuff with tons of distortion, and the seventy eighty just has too much high end and it begins to sound a bit thin and fizzy. It’s for cranked-plexi and heavier tones that I prefer a greenback/t75 combo, to emphasize the mids for some more contoured tones.

The v30 and the dsl 40 both c and cr models are are not the best combo . In a silver jubilee the v30 would crush the 70/80..the original dsl circuit was designed with the 70/80 in mind. It had very crisp highs like you can also hear in this video and it also sounded a little scooped to my ears. Especially with higher gain settings it really didn't sound pleasant to me. Something about the tone seemed boring and lifeless and it somehow was missing any smoothness or warmth in the treble frequencies. For cleans and slightly overdriven sounds it seemed usable though. It's funny because in comparison videos like this here it sounded fine to me and like it could be, what I was looking for. For the over-drive sounds, the Vintage 30 all the way: softer (more luxurious) response characteristics to the complex overtones of the sound. However, Celestion markets the Seventy 80 speakers as ideal for modeling amps, and the higher frequency response and clarity is obvious in every example. I conclude, the different speakers require different EQ and saturation settings to achieve similar sounds. I have a Traynor YCV80 - tube pre-amp, solid state rectifier, tube power amp - with two Seventy 80s that is very much like a Fender Twin, and I love the clean and and powerful response, perfect for jazz and effects pedals (the drive channel is nasally and I don't use it). I use 70/80`s & like them very well. At the time I bought them it was a mere matter of watts & ohms & these were available priced right. There`s a lot of hype about speakers, but most important is durability. Beyond that a lot of timbre & color can be added or varied based on other things such as the cab it`s in, how it`s mic'd up, as well as your guitar, your amp, settings & FX. For what it`s worth I use 4@4x12" cabs & they`re old wood & heavy cabs powered by 2 stereo modeling amps & i`m usually using hi gain pickups & hi gain amp settings with some pitch shift. Not a lot of ballads going on here...pretty loud, dark & distorted. Nice to hear your test.

Great comp Shane. I think seventy 80s have been unfairly maligned, most likely by people who haven't tried them. They are quite transparent and don't seem to colour the sound in comparison with some of the other speakers. I have one in a Blackstar Studio 10 KT88 combo and it sounds huge. I also run my Origin 20H through an MX 2x12 (the vertical one). With the original seventy 80s I was pretty happy with the sound. In the name of experimentation I swapped them out for V30s, but wasn't really happy with the result - it sounded kind of thick and didn't break up as early so swapped one of the 70/80s back in. I felt that was an improvement, but ended up replacing that with a G12T75. The V30/G12T75 is a great mix of speakers. One day I'll swap the Seventy 80s back in and see how they compare again. One thing, the Seventy 80s are very light in comparison with the V30's so the cab is now noticibly heavier to huck around.

I want to hear them both in a 2x12. As in one Vintage 30 and a Seventy 80 together.

Just bought a cheap battered Marshall cab with 4x12 G12p80 (seventy80s) and I also have a really old 1970s Powercell 12-120 watt designed and used for keyboards that I put in the cheapest Pulse 120m watt Wedge cab (I use with my NI Smart midi S49 keyboard). I have another wedge with a Vintage30 in it, bought a pair of Pulse cabs cos I had the Celestions kicking about for many years boxed new. I also put some plywood around the inside of the Pulse cabs just to help control the bass better. Without pushing them, using same amps instruments etc , the Powercell is so much brighter and cleaner the Vintage30/seventy80 are smooth DULL and needs pushing SIGNIFICANTLY harder before they decide to wake up withouth ever getting that bright top end on the Powercell. The seventy 80 are renowned for modelling which was why I bought them and are only slightly different to Vintage30s, again a difference you can only really tell once the speakers are pushed hard. The issue with the Vintage and G12T is there a one instrument only speaker, they do not like you pushing bass/mid/high all at once so hence a true Guitar speaker not PA or for keyboards. Whilst the Powercell is a wonderful speaker since it can handle what ever you through at them. especially high/lead parts at the cost of some bass response it would be a little too bright for some, especially rhythm darker metal. Again seventy80s are great for darker Heavy Metal, I think better even than the Vintage30s due to the added bass response/bottom end. a more full deeper darker bass What I want to say is it all depends on your source, your amp, your speakers and what volume you are running them all at. For recording I usually always run the amps high gain but with lower input levels, I also find mixing more than 2 speakers can be a great benefit, in fact I will mic up the cabs (wet) and also take a line in from DI so have a dry track or two for any extra effects and modelling. I have found no speaker is perfect for every scenario, you need to carefully pick and choose and it is very much down to personal preference and the specific need at the time (studio live room etc). Mixing different speakers in a cab is certainly one way round it, especially if you can wire them in stereo - split two channel. But for recording live you would probably find you use different speakers, and as many will say for live if you have a modelling amp get the seventy80s the Vintage30 are the once for the true guitarist who use effects without the modelling. as for the difference in cabs, I dont think it really makes any significant difference SO LONG as the cab has plywood surround inside and not any form of MDF that will just soak up and muffle the bass or maybe not cos some might like that deeper darker tone without the tight bass.

I have both speakers and had a similar experience. The 70/80's sounded fine clean or at lower volumes. But when you added some crunch or distortion, the more you turned the sound up the thinner and more fizzy they got. I have the V30 in a DSL5c and some Greenback clones in a 2x12 with DSL20HR. Thinking of trying to mix them both and put a 70/80 in the 5c. Wondering if the 30 will overpower the Greenbacks with their higher decibels and not let the greenback smooth out some of that V30 spike.

That’s what I was thinking...they might balance one another...but (in my opinion) it easier to bring out the treble from a set of v30 than to bring the low end from the 70/80...

70/80 seems to have better highs and cleaner mids. V30 is more colored for that metal sound

I think the V30's sounded best but the 70-80 sounded dang good to me when doing the clean demo....Overall tho for a Strat player like me I'd do the V-30's. I had a Mesa Recto 2x12 cab I bought back in 90-ish and it sounded wonderful but I'm 63 now and am considering an upright 2x12. The Mesa cab was too heavy-ish and awkward for me to carry easily.

Love watching Shane smash out his demos always gives a realistic demo with a great vibe that’s enjoyable to watch. Question 🙋♂️ for Shane off this video, I use a Fender custom 68 princeton reverb as my recording and gig amp. I am looking in to the celestion 70/80 speakers 2x12 to pair it with. What’s your thoughts please or is there something else you would suggest with my amp? Thanks Ben 💯💙🎸

The thing i noticed most of all on my Marshall dsl40c was the neck pick ups on LP's and strats suddenly sound amazing with the v30. (They used to sound dull and lifeless with seventy/80's whatever tone settings I used, so I only ever used to play with the bridge pickups).
@georgefromgreece41193 жыл бұрын
Because neck pickups need mids to sound good and v30s have them

Still don't know why V30's are the 'go to' rock or metal speaker.. A/B'd both my Mesa cab with V30's vs and old Blue Voodoo with Seventy 80's with the same head (JSX), and I pick the Seventy 80's every time for recording for clarity. I think people just hear things on forums and never actually try things for themselves. Keep in mind, if your amp is very 'dark', V30's might sound better. But not all amps are so dark with EL34s!
@lightninginmyhands48782 жыл бұрын
"dark" is an interesting term: as in playing in a low-lit speak-easy? then it would click that you'd want this sound to fill that place up with the big low-end of those 30s

I'm bowled over about how spot on this video turned out to be for my individual needs. I'm modding my Vox AC15 and was torn between which speaker to use when I replace the Wharfedale that it has now. The current speaker just can't deliver the full spectrum of sound that the Vox is capable of creating. I have a separate cab which is home to the Vintage 30 and frankly it does improve the sound of the amp enormously but I think I'll have to install the Seventy 80 after hearing what it can do. If anyone has any suggestions for additional mods for the AC15 lay 'em on me, please.

70/80s win here at face value Shane. I think you've got to be in the room and feel em though. I know the V30 is a premium midsy speaker that works great with the right amp. It's like KZbin compressor demos - unless you're playing the guitar you don't know how it feels. Top geezer Shane 🌴

I had Marshall cab with seventy 80 s to me with crunch up to metal the best way l can describe them is a cross between a can of nail's been shaked to a jar of blowflies So l tried a mixture of 3greenbacks and 1 seventy 80 and it sounded pretty good

I much prefer the vintage 30's and they sound so much fuller but I can see the Seventy 80 being great if you are fighting with Drums, Bass and at least one other guitarist in a band and not wanting to add competition to their frequencies. The Seventy 80's are almost like listening to a TV through the thin built in speakers whilst the Vintage 30's are like using a soundbar by comparison... My 2x12 Marshall has a Vintage 30 and a Heritage 30

How come on the clean tones they sounded almost exactly the same, but distorted they sounded massively different? Is it the wattage?
@spentron14 жыл бұрын
Treble content. There is some ultra-high frequency in the clean sound but the dirt makes it almost constant. Both are still better than the classic clean Fender speakers for distortion, which lack any real bite, leading to too piercing treble trying to compensate.
@ricklanders2 жыл бұрын
I must be the only one who preferred the V30 in the stormy Monday/clean section. The better mids of the V30 make it sound more articulate to my ears, while the 70/80 was too soft in the mids and too heavy in the lows, making it sound almost muddy in comparison. Do blues players really need all those lows? I don't think so. Give me the mids to cut through. I'll take the V30.
@Schlumpf.Meister5 жыл бұрын
The 70/80 sounds fizzy. But Shane, this is not a fair comparison, the cabinet has huge impact on the overall tone, you would have to measure in the same cabinet, one after another, and for doing so, I would recommend to play into a looper and use the loop for both runs. Even the v30 sounds fizzy compared to the original design manufactured through the early 90s.

Beyond the Mesa n Orange 412s, you've got a long search for a pleasing V30 tone. Fought with their tiring shriek for years. The only amps of mine i still use V30s with are my supersonic 100 or its twin 2x12 combo (yeah I did buy em both). 70/80 crushed all tones in Shane's demo.

My old DSL40 came with a 70/80. Hated it then, hate it now. I can't believe they still put those in some cabs. They sound so much better with a proper Celestion like a V30 or Creamback. They must've known because I think now the new version of the DSL40 comes with a different speaker now and before then Sweetwater sold a limited ed. one with a Creamback

It may well be the cab/amp but the 70/80 in the monoprice 15 watt I have has never done it for me. (Feel free to tell me if its actually the fault of the amp) I'm considering building a cabinet for the 70/80 and putting a vintage 30 in the 15 watt combo. I'm open to thoughts and opinions.

hey buddy. just a little tip. get a di box and just reamp the track. that way you dont have to play it twice and there is no human error invloved. you can use the track for 1000 different speakers and always have a solid baseline

I have the same 212 cabinet with 70-80 speakers in it. I've had it for 25 years. I don't have the means to demo speakers. So these are good enough. They are well broken in. As far as this video I didn't hear a big enough difference for me to panic.
@peterschmidt99425 жыл бұрын
It's amazing the sounds you can get just by tweaking the amp to suit the speaker box! I'm sure the cheaper Harley Benton cabs have a similar speaker in them. Works for me once I dial in the amp.
@guitarocd99845 жыл бұрын
I agree with that. They sound a lot better after they get broken in. I went through a turn it up to 10 Marshall phase and these speakers took a licking and kept on ticking. A lot of people rip them out before they get broken in.

I got a 2x12" Marshall cabinet with the Seventy 80s some years ago and... while not bad, I do think they probably make the sound lack something. - I mean, yea, maybe my amplifier is a little questionable, but even when I try to set it the best I can, it seems to lack something nice, especially trying to get a guitar to "sing" or "shine". - It's like the "goodness" caps out at 75-80% of what one would like and it just can't get any further than that. - Maybe it's because I'm not driving the speakers hard enough, but... yea, I don't know, even at like 80-something dBs it should probably sound good. - That said, I might get another cab with say your regular V30s or the V-Type that also seem interesting. I basically got that Marshall-cabinet because of its shape, being one of those vertical ones where the top half is slanted, to both have a nice size but a smaller footprint, as well as some spread for the sound, but also because it was like 300-something Euros. - Oh, and I believe it's one of the lighter ones at 23KG, while others of even similar size can be over 30KG for some reason. That's probably because the construction or wood is different, which in turn might change the sound as well, but I need to drag it up two flights of stairs.

I've owned the Seventy 80 in both open back Blackstar and closed Marshall tube amps. My open-back Blackstar has more prominent (but not overpowering) midrange, whereas the closed-back Marshall only produces more thumpy bass and high-end shimmer. The open-back Blackstar HT Club 40 Mk II 1x12 combo sits more nicely in the band mix than my Marshall DSL20HR with MX212AR cab. I think the V30 would improve the MX212 cabinet, but probably too much upper midrange in an open-back cabinet.
@TheInfiniteFret Жыл бұрын
You might want to try greenbacks or redbacks. I have a Blackstar HT Stage 60 2x12 open back with seventy 80s. I ran it through a closed cab with greenbacks, and it was a totally different amp. Huge improvement. 2x12 greenbacks can't handle 60 watts though, so I want to try the redbacks. I think it would sound good. IMO, the seventy 80 speakers are not the best match for this line of amps at all. Of course, they are cheaper, so that helps them keep the price down. I agree with you on the V30. I have a pair, but I don't plan on putting them in the Blackstar combo.
