Guys ... I have recently changed jobs and I'm training myself to become a VFX artist so me and a friend can start a business and I have to say these videos are incredible. I have learned so much from following your page I can't even believe it myself! Maya is such a beast of a program and any videos you can post about anything that you can do in it are an absolute godsend! I think ... what I would really love to see ... is something similar to your video on zBrush about painting a model from start to finish, where you painted a blokes head and went through every detail. It's because of you that I know how to use zBrush! If you could do that with Maya as well, and I'm aware it'll be a bigger job, that would be amazing, just so I have a video to reference whilst I'm doing my own painting, texturing and uv mapping. I'm sure a lot of people who are also starting out will appreciate it too. Keep up the great work! Honestly, this page is invaluable!

Hey, guys! I liked this video a lot, because you are explaining with simple objects what happens when you are UV mapping an object, but i feel like it could have been a bit better, in regards of explaining why things work they way they do and also just go more in depth with the terminology and the concepts themselves you touch on here. Especially since UV mapping is one of the hardest concepts most people have trouble understanding, since it's the hardest thing to explain from scratch. You do kind of say what some terms are, but more like a glance over, as in already knowing all the words and terms you use to describe the actions and things happening in the video, instead of finishing describing them, especially since is intended for beginners. For example, what is a projection, what streatching means, what overlapping of UV's are and why they are happening, etc, etc... It took me a little while to understand the terms and what correlates the UV's with the object, but since learning what it is, I love making good UV layouts for my models everytime. This could also turn into a video of "Are good UV's Overated?" 😉 Still enjoyed the video very much!

Can you make an advanced tutorial for UVs? I get that i should cut seams to make as much of the model as flat as possible. But what about further information; should i cut seams along edges/ridges or depressive areas? When should i cut the model into many flat pieces as opposed to large parts of the model being cut as one piece? I have good software for it (Unfold3D) but i don't understand UV mapping in detail. Good to know i don't have to cut seams in a way to avoid the seams being visible when texturing!

YES! That's exactly the video I've been waiting for!!! My questions are all about UVing Clothes. The thing that grinds my head the most is about how to unfold it. I have a model and the clothes are kinda thick and all. So, what I've been told is that it's better to delete the inside faces of the clothes so it works like simple fabric. Is that true? Because if that is true, I just don't have any idea on how to make thick clothes, because in the end they'll be just a layer carefully modeled to look like they are thick, but they are just a thin layer with folds or something like that. I'll be waiting for more on this, cuz UVs are just a pain for me and I would love to master it!!

I have a question how do you uv map a massive object for first person shooter? I have a spaceship I built that is 1 kilometer long. And I cut up the mesh into 7 uv maps. But in game the textures at 4k still look super blurry and undetailed. Is the answer to make more uv maps? But how do I deal with the memory requirements for each uv map has diff, normal, spec, and glow textures. How should I go about fixing my model so in first person the ship isn't blurry? Thank you!

How do you efficiently use your time to UV something that may be simple...or complicated but also very tedious. I'm currently UVing a tree and I don't know if I'm approaching or UVing it in the most efficient way.
@FlippedNormals6 жыл бұрын
The way I UV map is heavily dependent on how I'll texture it. I dont just unfold it and call it a day, really helps to keep texturing in mind. Sometimes you can keep the UVs very simple if the texture is mostly procedural, like a piece of glass, or very advanced if you need full control

@FlippedNormals6 жыл бұрын
You dont technically need UVs on your high poly if you're baking. For film, you wouldnt really have a high and a low poly per se, but just one model with subdivision levels. You want UVs on your low poly regardless :)
@Mirakuruuu5 жыл бұрын
I know that all your maps must be kept inside the value of 1 UV mapping but i really didnt bother to know what will it affect to your texture if it goes beyond the value of 1. What will happen to them?
@Crimelord5 жыл бұрын
You mean the box? What if the UVs go beyond the UV space? If that's the question then quite simply, you'd get an error and you can't really just paint with half the UV in one space and the other half in the other. You could however pack specific parts of the model in different UV spaces and that's what UDIMs are essentially.

There's probably a slight generation gap here, but in my childhood I used to buld plane models, either out of plastic kits or paper. The papercraft version was harder to assemble, but that's the closest thing to unwrapping I can imagine, i.e. you had to cut out already "unwrapped plane parts", and then bend and glue them together. Good times. www.mojehobby.pl/zdjecia/3/6/5/24376_2_ang-126_8.jpg As for actual unwrapping, I work mostly with realtime models, but even now I feel like unwrapping is some kind of atonement for all the joy I had making the medium and low poly model. Such a tedious and boring process.
@izvarzone6 жыл бұрын
There are some differences in unwrapping 3d models though. I remember old tuts that said unwrap like paper models, but later learned it's not correct way. So for example cube with 6 sides, in paper it would be 1 part that looks like cross, but for normal maps it should be 6 different squares (because they all 6 different smoothing groups), NM's can be baked on 1 smoothing groups, some people even advocated that. It gives normal map with lot of gradients. But it looked bad in Unreal Engine 4 after texture got compressed, there was clearly seen gradient on flat surface where its not needed to be. It's even get worse when blending baked normal map with detail normal or parallax. UV's should be split on each hard edge, if you're baking normal map. The could be unsplit if you're not baking anything. For lightmap UV sometimes they need to be connected (even though it's baking too) but again not the same way as paper models.
@peterspy88676 жыл бұрын
That's why it's "like" paper models (kind of in reverse), but it's not the same thing, obviously. There is nothing else like that, but this is probably the easiest comparison. You immediately focus on details and intricacies that go later, and they're out of scope of this tutorial.
