Great battle. I remember one interesting 2v2 battle where me and my ally had only archers and our opponents had a few legionaries. They decided to go into testudo formation but instead of minimising their casualties it did the complete opposite and it cost them the battle.

Hey Oak, would you ever consider doing a sorta military debate with either your subs on a live-stream while playing Total War or with other KZbinrs. I think it would be awesome to here some discussions between you and (either Subs or KZbinrs). Also, would anyone else think of this as a cool little idea?

A discussion of tactics might be interesting but I find that in general you want to strike where the enemy is weakest. All the details of how to do that revolve around the specifics. So I guess you could say a discussion is taking place every battle in the moves of each general. Talking about it in a livestream could be useful for spur of the moment thinking but in replays you can pause and dissect all the little details so I feel its a better approach

idk i think he might have meant like a debate on the military leaders and/or tactics themselves in real life or from what we know historically about them and compare, but while you play the game. Don't know if you've done it already but you do seem to have quite a bit of knowledge on a lot of ancient warfare in this time period and I think it'd be interesting as hell, can't get enough of this history.

you would have won easily if you went with less ships and more units. preatorians can easily be killed off by a few jav units, especially if you got pikes are your meat shield.

Nice siege, however i don't understand why you did not really try to keep the romans out of the city in the first place, you could've placed pikes at the bottom of the wall exits and archers behind the pikes to pick them off

Umm, I was wondering when I was watching, what was the reason for not defending the walls? If you could have held them from the walls for a longer time, you might have been able to hold out longer. Granted, if the walls started to get pounded, you could just pull back you range troops. Plus you didn't seem to try & hold the gates too.

+DrakeMarvell Sometimes, it is much better to let the walls fall. This allows the enemy to tire themselves out, and saves reserve troops. By defending the wall Oakley would have been pounded significantly by long range siege engines.

+DrakeMarvell well with the amount of siege there all troops on the wall would have been serious cannon fodder. This would have left his troops free to pick off by siege, and if the enemy wanted to (sometimes it is worth it) ranged I gantry could have picked them off as well from the outside. its better to just let the walls fall in some cases as it would not be worth to protect. However, as you will see in later videos players have started placing pikes/hoplites at stairs to hold units on the wall, allowing friendly ranged units to pick apart the enemy exposed on the wall.

Why did you have almost no troops on the walls? You also had no troops to defend the gate and you should have had all those archers on the walls where they would have done way more damage. If you had put the pikemen by the gate very little of the romans would have made it in, pikemen are very good at defending small spaces like roads between buildings and gates. You should have also had melee troops on the walls to kill the romans that came up the siege towers. The artillery ships should have been firing at the ballistas and siege towers, not the troops that had already made it on top of the walls. With the amount of troops you had this should have been a very easy battle.
