Now, it’s becoming complimentary to desktop computing instead of replacing it, which is extremely frustrating for futurists who thought the mouse and keyboard would be a thing of the past… a lot of them looked to Apple for clues on what the future would look like. This is partially because the industry found out over the past decade that a touchscreen couldn’t truly replace some tactile input methods of controlling electronics. A LOT of tech nerds thought Apple was going to replace the Mac with the iPad. This was the year that almost everyone thought it was going to happen with the introduction of the M1 SoC inside the iPad Pro.

I’ve used my IPad Pro for the last 3 years as my only PC it the experience for me has been fantastic. My job is as Marketing Manager where I spent my day answering to emails, visiting customers, reviewing art work with the team and check the business intelligence tools. For all of this work I think the IPad Pro with magic keyboard is a fantastic tool. Every time I see this reviews everyone focuses more on the capabilities in terms of video and photo edition. But for office work the IPad can be your main pc. I only use my Mac when i have to build marketing budgets on excel or really important presentations. But for my daily work the IPad is a fantastic tool.

It's kinda annoying that basically only some tech KZbinrs are always saying the iPad is not a Laptop replacement etc. just because it doesn't fit their super specific (video editing) needs. for Millions and millions of people, the iPad has replaced their laptops and even Desktops years ago. If Apple had a slightly better Monitor support (instead of just mirroring the screen) I could even replace my desktop for like 99% of the stuff I'm doing, the only real exception being gaming.

I don't think they will neglect the lower end models like the new iPad Airs or the entry point new iPad. expecting a new experience for only one of the iPads was stretching expectations far. maybe next year when more models catch up to m1 chips they can start phasing out the A series and focus on a newer experience.

They’re not all coming out at the same time - they have 3 different updates scheduled to come out by the end of the year - but these (and some of the other new things coming) are pushing it ever closer to FCP for iPad.

What people don't realize is that Apple had to use the M1 chip in this iPad Pro, it's way cheaper to mass produce one chip for multiple product lines instead of different ones, and it also makes for good marketing. I won't be surprised if there is an M1 iPhone in the near future, since the production cost of both the A14 and the M1 is the same (around $40-$50).

The m1 uses way too much power though for an iPhone. The battery life would be much worse, not to mention they'd have to fit a rather large motherboard into the iPhone since the m1 is larger than their A series SoCs

@@Bluecolty can’t be using THAT much battery when looking at how good the battery life is on the MacBooks. The extra battery capacity increase also help endurance for the new soon to be released iPhones. They’ll reduce the number of cores and reduce clock speeds and it’ll still be more than enough to beat Android phones and A series chips.

Not to mention even if they cut clock speed and reduce the number of cores you're still dealing with an iPhone footprint, not a 13" macbook or an 11" iPad. I too have tried to make the most usage from my iPad over a laptop, and while it's nice for traveling on planes, I'm still having to do more of my day to day work on a laptop, either my personal Macbook Pro or on my company issued HP Elitebook. I am excited to have widgets anywhere on the screen with iPadOS 15. I also think the new Note Features are going to be nice to have as well.

I think the biggest issue with high expectations here was just how close the release of the M1 iPad Pro was to iPadOS 15's. The biggest takeaway I got from your own review on the iPad Pro was that they're clearly setting up for the future...I just don't think it was gonna be this near of a future. Purely from a Profit/ Revenue per device - Consumers are more inclined to buy an iPad compared to an iPod. More money for apple in this category. plus until apple figures out to stream apple music on the Shuffle line up or the least featured iPod line up they wont be re-introducing it. It's beautiful and nice to use, until you want to do anything creative or productive. The hoops you have to jump through to do everything is just a waste of time. I’m not a content creator but I bought a Pro for pro-level apps. Otherwise the new Air would have been enough. I don’t want a hobbled MS Office Suite and I need better file management… I bought a 1TB and I need a comprehensive way to organize all that space. I’m a student. I fully understand what you’re saying but as a college student for the last year or more I have been strictly using the iPad Pro. My MacBook only comes out in the very rare event that something just won’t open on the iPad for some reason and even then the thing seems to be built for a windows pc instead of a Mac anyways. Serious work can be done on the iPad but it’s not every kind of work like a laptop can handle.

A thought I had was that perhaps Apple couldn't get whatever iPad-specific chips they designed produced in the quantities needed to launch the new IPPs with the "A14Z" or whatever, so they just bit the bullet and went with what was on hand, i.e. the M1. That would help explain why it feels so knee-capped software-wise, because it was meant to have a less OP chip in there. Like you've noted, the A12Z was already top dog in tablet-land, so the idea that Apple could hold out and still be king obviously has some product stack benefits -- you know, unless there's a global chip shortage going on...

I think Apple released iPadOS 15 as a foundation for iPadOS 16. Better window management, widgets on the homescreen, App Library, its pretty much a way to balance iOS and iPadOS. This gives time for Apple to develop (well technically, they are already developing) iPadOS 16, which will, in my opinion/theory, be the “big update” we were looking for.

Big respect for Marques and his amazing work. I just can‘t help but think that most KZbin Apple product reviewers are slightly biased towards expecting the products to be designed for their own work. The „Pro“ in iPad Pro is not the same as the „Pro“ in MacBook Pro. Only a tiny fraction of users requires apps like Final Cut.
