This is my last planned video from Ipswich in Suffolk. Come with me as I take another walking tour through the town looking at the town's history and heritage. In this video I’ll discover the ruins of Blackfriars Priory, a building to a former Ipswich business, some interesting pubs and an old gatehouse. I’ll discover some blue plaques, one of which is linked to Kett’s Rebellion of 1549. I then walk into Christchurch Park, visit the old Tudor mansion and discover the Martyr’s Memorial. This was one of my more enjoyable walks around the town of Ipswich.
There is an exclusive extra clip on my Patreon page for members. This is the clip that never made the final edit.
My thanks to Jackamans Solicitors for allowing me into their building.

I have really enjoyed this history tour of Ipswich. I look forward to watching the rest of your tours. Thanks so much for sharing your interest in history. I wish I could fly across the pond to see all the interesting places in Great Britain. I found through DNA that I have British, Scot, Wales and Irish roots.

Hi Alice, never been to Ipswich so it was so nice to look around. Interesting to hear about the remains of the 1273 Blackfriars Priory and how the first friar there went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury. Loved the Christchurch Park Pond, it was so beautiful and it was a shame that the Edwardian lady and her dancing children didn't come out and dance for you 😄 Enjoyed that, thank you ~ Anna

Another interesting history stroll, Alice. We loved it! Enjoyed seeing the old priory and haunted pubs but we really enjoyed seeing Pykenhams Gatehouse. Lovely photos. St Martins Church is stunning on such a beautiful day! Lovely Christchurch walk through and it would have been nice to witness the ghostly lady of the past. It was great to see the Martyrs Memorial honoring some of the very tragic past. Thanks so much for bringing us along.

I have followed and enjoyed your history walks for quite some time, you have taken me to many towns and cities that I failed to comment on, so its time for me to add something on this visit to my home town. I am very proud of Ipswich Town and feel it is worth City statest. The house where I was born in 1937 is still there, although you came very close I was particularly pleased when you walked to St Mary at the Elms Church. I was choireboy and learnt much of its history, sadly because of the towers structure it was/is only possible to have one bell rung at service time. Just a short distance from the church there is a flint wall that is part of the old Vicarage. Our house at 14 Curriers Lane faced that wall, I was researching this area and receaved confirmation from Ipswich Records Office that the flint wall was listed as being built at the time as St Mary at the Elms church. The wall is still there and can be seen in Civic Drive, the 1960s rebuilding changed much of the old town, that particular road prior to the big change was Tanners Lane.

Thank you for your fascinating comment. This is why I make these videos so that everyone can travel with me, learning more of these locations. I was in A Coruña, Spain the other day and discovered a little piece of Ipswich in one of the parks. The opening sequence from my Netherlands series, previewing in January, also shows Ipswich from the air. I really like Ipswich, such an interesting town historically, and receiving your comment shows just how people value where they grew up.

To be honest, by Ipswich standards Christ Church in Tacket Street is relatively modern, having been built in the mid 1800s. Depending where you draw the lines, Ipswich has a dozen mediæval churches. If you visit Ipswich again, take the opportunity to go upstairs in Caffè Nero on the corner of Buttermarket and Upper Brook Street (you passed by it on your way through) - at the far back you'll find a coat of arms attributed to Queen Elizabeth I. It has apparently had the Welsh dragon supported removed as it was replaced by the Scottish Unicorn.

Thank you for your comment Frank. Indeed, there are many old churches as well as more modern ones. I do periodically visit Ipswich and will go upstairs in Café Nero. Always interested in discovering something new. Old churches fascenate me, as they tend to House incredible relics from history, as well as playing a part in a town's history, as I found out whilst exploring Drogheda last year.

It's interesting to read your thoughts on Christchurch Mansion. In making these videos, I can only go by all known reviews from local historians. However, I don't believe in ghosts, so I would lean to your views.
