Thank you Keith for taking us along your ODB2 quest. Part of MBenz complexity is rooted on all these coded CAN bus modules built by 3rd party suppliers for a range of models. Software issues come from lack of real compatibility between modules for untested chassis combinations. Front and Rear $1,500 SAM's love to burn up once the china relay contacts fail and blow internal links... some internet shops can fix 'em on the cheap for diy'ers. This way no replacement coding is necessary. Happy new year for 2020! 😊

Thanks illwills! Yes, these SAMs store a lot of data that can steer us away from buying vehicles that should be avoided. Keep in mind that cars free of DTCs are also suspect and should be driven a bit to see if any dtcs appear. Run all the lights, HVAC, cruise control, and the other devices to see if dtc codes appear. 2009 W164 ML63. Headlight washer pump is fine. Zero volt on connector to pump when activating it. Where is the SAM/Fuse/Relay controlling the pump, please?

Keith!!! I have a 2008 ML320 CDI, I got the red battery light while driving and was able to get it home. I replaced the voltage regulator (alternator brushes) and fixed my problem. Issue now is my front wipers do not work. Any suggestions would be of so much help. Thank you.

Hi Keith. My mercedes c240 s203 is having an issue with a driver side low beam head lamp is out but the high beam works. I recently tried to install h7 leds and noticed the led low beam wasn't working. Any help would be appreciated 🙏🏽

Hello from jakarta indonesia. I drive 2009 ML350 W164. Suddenly my lowbeam only lights up at leftside only, the highbeam only lights up at right side only, and the foglamp only lights up at right side only. Is it possible that my front sam broken?

Upon my experience I recommend to clean front SAM with alcohol every 5 years , you will find salt from moisture which disturb It's normal functioning

Correct, especially if the vehicle is in very humid salty areas (near the ocean)

You can remove the SAM and clean it with electrical contact cleaner. Then reinstall.

Hi , I’m having issues with my car 2002 c230 kompressor runs and drives but got water in the Sam when washing the car and now the windshield washers and headlights are on constantly like power is being distributed and bypassing relays , wiper arms stopped working and brake lights are on after starting the car along with the radiator fan , I dried out the front Sam thoroughly and inspected it for corrosion and reinstalled and issue persists any ideas??? Or do you have access to the epc to cross reference my vin and Sam module so I know if my second cars Sam is compatible ???

Great video, Got 9006 fault code for a/c compressor problem. I was told that mb bulletin suggests checking front Sam! I don't have a icarsoft scanner. Have you seen anything relating to a/c shorts on circuit a9?

I’m having issues with my ML 63AMG. I get a check engine light only in the summer months when its hot. During the winter months it goes out and I never see it until its warm again. Ran the diagnostic tool on it and it always gives a faulty fuel rail sensor replaced it and that did not fix the issue. After having the car for some years now I realized that the engine coolant fan has never come on in the car. After doing some research there were some solutions I think are contributing factors. Either the module for the fan is bad or there is a faulty connection from the relay to the fan or the SAM module may have a blown fuse. I am seeing that the SAM is supposed to be a non- serviceable part but I saw.a video for which you can take it apart and replace the fuse if it is blown. Other options are remove and replace the SAM or remove and replace the fan and the motor that runs it. Would you have any other suggestions?

If you had a front headlight out, would it tell you in the scan tool and would you have to reset it after you replaced the bulb?

Yes it would tell you in the scan tool. Dtc codes don't trigger check engine lights. But you can still and you should clear the dtc code.

Would the new bulb work without clearing the code in the SAM? I tried 2 new bulbs and both didn't work. A trip to the dealer and 10 minutes later it was fixed, they said a new bulb was installed. I'm thinking that it has to be reset somehow.

I just stsrted the car, got the headlight message, turned the headlight switch off then the car off, replaced the bulb and stsrted the car and turned the headlights back on. Voila! I have gone through 3 passenger side bulbs and 1 drivers bulb in 1 year though. Kinda leary about putting expensive bulbs in there. The light outputnus pretty terrible too, have been wondering about LED upgrade but would the computer see those? Just another MB question lol

I purchased this i980 after watching this video. I can't get my wipers to work. I've changed all the little inexpensive parts. Trying not to change the SAM. Any suggestions?

Any faults coming up in the front SAM? The motor is controlled by a relay, there is also a fuse. Check that they are good and that the motor is receiving voltage. You may need a volt meter to measure the voltage.

I've changed fuse, relay and the wiper switch. The current is good. However, the code reads: 902A. The component or the signal line to the component F58KB ( wiper on / off relay) has short circuit to ground. Any further assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You have a short in the electrical connection between the wiper motor and the relay/fuse/switch. The motor itself could be shorted out to ground. Can you remove the wiper motor and apply 12 volts to it to test it?

My i980 that I received only goes to 20 not 26 so I can't get to the area to scan the SAM. The codes that I sent you came from a ETHOS TECH SCANNER. And yes the wiper motor has been tested. I replaced it along with fuse and relay.
