It's actually crazy how far rugby has come in Ireland. I was 13 years of age in 2003 when I met someone that actually watched it and another that played it. Albeit was always popular in Munster and the private schools of Dublin.

Dominant display by the Young Shamrocks. To beat the Baby Boks in a semi final in South Africa with such style is impressive. They have been a class act for a while now and will be worthy finalists in this U20 World Championships. Not the best Junior Springboks side they've ever had, but they prevailed in an extremely competitive pool and made the semi finals. They have some exiting backs. Ireland 2nd South Africa 3rd

Prendergast is definitely not a Sexton regen in terms of play style in my opinion, he reminds me more of Beauden Barrett the way he plays. Doesn't have then same kind of pacey running game, although there is a willingness to run in him, but it's more the supreme confidence and unpredictable risk taking aspect to his game overall, the little dinks through or a dummy and burst here and there. One aspect that it is similar to Sexton though is the bravery to take the ball right to the line before passing. He's also huge for a 10 at 6"4. Really does look born to that Irish 10 jersey, very exciting prospect, but early days yet. Coincidentely the SA 10 Smith although it wasnt his best day yesterday looks a really good player aswell and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him in a Bok test jersey. This could be the first of many battles between these two for the next 15 years or so.

I have been quite surprised at how slow of a runner Prendergast is. He is good to tackle but poor to track. His game management is definitely improving with each game in this tournament

The difference in coaching competence is clearly showing, best school boy rugby in the world, yet we can't perform at U20 level. Stop the politics in sport and let the best players and coaches get the roles. Well done Ireland, your coaches and players clearly took this game more seriously.

That's a good point. Seems strange that South Africa Rugby does not focus on development of the U 20 player pool (if indeed that is the case). Is it assumed that the Club Teams are handling that stage of development of those young players? What is obvious is the need for the SH to establish an annual U 20 Championship like the U 20 Six Nations.

South Africa is trying to tackle its deep routed equality/divide issues, which in turn is arguably leading to selection not based on merit, resulting in underperformance at test level despite an excelling schools system.

There are not only quotas for entire squads but also for run-on teams and coaching staff. There is also a quota within a quota in that a certain number of the non-white players have to be black rather than mixed race. It's racism in its purest form.

Johnny Saxton said no 1 in the world means nothing if you can't win the world cup..In 2018 SA was ranked 7 below Scotland lost heavily to the All blacks and 2019 was a turn around where everyone lost hope for the Boks that's when they become winners and again a force to be reckoned with...Southern hemisphere teams are still the best teams...North only have 1 world cup and that team was England..South has 8 world cups All blacks 3, South Africa 3,Australia 2...Ireland,France they will struggle when it comes to play offs this year....So rankings means nothing at all

Watching the game live it seemed like SA were asking creativity n their attack so were able to bend but not break the Irish defensive system. In particular, the SA 10 looked average at best and unable to realise what looked like a lethal backline

its the daft quota system they implemented several years ago where 50% of the players must be black….So whether the player is black or white they wont get selected if the quota is met….the best 30 players could be black but only half can be picked. This is why there was a such a large exodus of players into European rugby as they knew they would never get picked, no matter how good they were…..

This is just an opinion.....I'd imagine that 55 million of the SA people have no real interest in rugby (Generally Soccer, i'd say), except for a few...! So the pool to pick from is about the same as Ireland, about 5 million...!

the ^ looked one of your best players to me over their games I've seen - combatative and intelligent - not that tall but good upper body strength and nice swerve/low centre of gravity. I'd like to see how he develops, it's only U20. Ireland's young men are typically later to mature than our Southern [European] and English competition - we can't afford to jettison talent like this before they are fully developed.
