Go Woke, Go Broke
What can I say guys. What can I say. This movie went woke so it then went broke. Go Woke Go broke. Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse is woke
Guys but seriously. Don't ever use the word woke, agenda, or anything like that. You talk about the quality. Motivation does not matter. It can be discussed if you want for sure. But motivation by itself means nothing. Maybe someone's agenda could better the quality of something. We'll see.
Thanks guys for watching, I love all of you. I planned to make 3 videos for thanksgiving week. I almost did. I'm writing this on sunday. But yeah thank you.
This is the last spider verse video for a year, seriously. Thank you.

It would of been cool to see Peter B Parker like drop his baby off and jacket off and just start knocking spider-men out while trying to catch up to miles. I'ont think it's fair to call Miles shallow for not wanting his parents to hate him, I think it goes without saying if he were to tell them he's spiderman they would be just as worried for him as Aunt May would be for Peter. We've also seen how being Spider-Man has affected his relationship with his parents and what his dad actively thinks about him, if anything it's more selfish to not tell his parents his identity.

5:29 Of course he's not going to act like spiderman, he was never meant to be spiderman in the first place. That's the whole motivation of the movie, it's not that anyone can be spiderman but rather that anyone can put on the mask. In fact if you look at the movies story arc, he's doing something that every one in the spider community was against because he thinks different from everyone else on that community.

Still makes Miles motivation to not let his parents know pretty hollow "I don't want my parents to know because they'll hate me" like bruh what parent would hate his own son because he's saving lifes? it's like a Firefighter's parents are going to hate him because he does his best to keep people save. It's also bad because Spiderman represents selflessness, he should be worried about his family and friends being in danger, not because they'll hate him if they find out.

Hm honestly I don't really agree with a lot of your points. To me, the fact that Peter never opens up to his friends and family about being Spiderman doesn't seem like a "selfless" thing, and more like a character flaw if anything. You see this best in the Insomniac game, but Peter clearly has work/life balance issues and his relationships suffer as a result. He doesn't believe he can or morally should lean on the people who care about him, and that's a feeling that someone obviously should overcome. You can clearly see it in the Insomniac clip you showed: despite Peter "selflessly" hiding his secret from Aunt May, she still worried, and probably worried a lot more than she would have if he was honest. I assume that the beginning part of the video was a joke to make fun of the Ben Shapiro-type of KZbinrs who get offended by "woke" stuff, but I feel like it's still worth it to point out that representation and acknowledgement is still pretty important. LGBT people and other minorities that receive disproportionately large amounts of hate really benefit in the long run from little things like trans flags and gay characters. Stuff like that is exactly what turned me away from the Alt-right and made me stop being homophobic and transphobic everywhere on the Internet. I simply saw enough pro-lgbt stuff, or "woke" stuff, and my defenses got weaker and weaker and I eventually just accepted that it's perfectly normal to be LGBT and that I was being a bigot. You could say that that's literally an agenda, but I'd argue that it's an agenda that we should absolutely have. If you have a platform, I feel like you are obligated to use it for good. With great power comes great responsibility and all that. How much you want that representation to go into your piece of art depends on you, and Spiderverse did the usual thing of just some little references or character representation, and no real plot significance. This to me is just fine and isn't really an example of bad writing. And honestly yeah that ending of Into the Spiderverse when Fisk just stands there lagging is goofy as hell I wish they wrote a reason why he wasn't moving lmao, but overall I thought both movies were better than "meh" simply because of their underlying character messages

I think across suffers from being too long, and not being able to pay off its metaphors. It's a bad movie I think without into. Nobdoy's motivation makes sense without watching into first. The Gwen stuff just seems shallow even with the context of Into. The miles stuff imo is great, and I disagree that the coming out stuff is bad writing. But the problem is if you just watch across it is bad, but with into its mediocre. But again that's across' s biggest issue. I love Into, but its main weakness is its ending. It just kind of happens, which is fine, endings in comic books happen, and you have to wrap it up somehow. But the kingpin fight blows from a writing perspective, he is defeated by lagging by trying to find his family? Bros too smart to lag out like that.

I didn’t expect to agree with so much criticism of two of my favorite movies of all time! Looking back, yeah, the ending of that first movie is pretty forced. Gwen’s reaction to Miguel is pretty ridiculous. Doesn’t stop me from loving these movies, though! I will disagree with you a bit on the “coming out as Spider-Man is an allegory for coming out as gay” thing. I don’t think that was meant to be a parallel, and if it was, I think there’s a bit more to it than that. I can definitely see where you’re coming from, these movies didn’t really address the whole “no one can know your identity because you need to protect them” aspect. But I think these movies explored a different aspect of the whole secret identity thing in a new way that doesn’t really need to connect with coming out in order to be relatable and understandable. Great video! Even though we disagree on a few things, i’m so glad there are people out there who disagree with me that can express their views in a reasonable, nuanced way. Hopefully I’ve done the same.

Diversity and representation don't bother me at all; they honestly contribute to making things more visually interesting most of the time and can (not always) make things feel more real. However, none of that helps this movie not suck. Spot was entertaining, but everything else was just so stupid. I won't spoil it, but I rolled my eyes pretty hard at the meta plot point towards the end. Can we just get a good story surrounding like 3 or 4 characters? Why do we need like 15 characters that all get similar screen time? It just feels like a mess. Normally, "diversity" doesn't bother me, but it does take me out of it at times. The pregnant spider-person was one of those moments. There's like 500 other spider-people just chilling in a giant spider HQ... like... take a vacation... there are other people that can replace you... why are you risking your child's life?

"Can we just get a good story surrounding like 3 or 4 characters? Why do we need like 15 characters that all get similar screen time? Also it a movie about teenagers already doing dangerous things like fighting super villains or traveling across dimensions and solving tears in reality so your grievance seems shallow.

@@idontknowanymore2515 I don't understand why you're focusing so hard on a few lines in my original comment, but I'll do my best to explain why dividing focus between so many different characters is bad and takes away from the story. You say it's all integral to the plot, but it really isn't. The story is actually very simple. Spoilers: Miles wants to be with the girl he likes, but she's from another dimension. He wants to hop between dimensions too so he can be with her. He's an anomaly and screws up the meta narrative of another dimension on top of already screwing up his own. He finds out his dad is going to die because of the meta. There is conflict because he wants to stop the meta, but the spider people want the meta to continue as normal. The end of the movie has nothing to do with the rest of it, and it's a cliffhanger where he's stuck in another dimension. Spot is the villain that causes a lot of the plot to progress. Spider-Man 2099 is the leader of the spider people and progresses the plot there. I saw it a while ago, but that's pretty much it. At no point do you need to focus on any other characters for the story to work. Any time we get backstory for a character that isn't mentioned above, it doesn't matter. Any time we get screen time for a character that isn't mentioned above, it doesn't matter. They're taking away crucial development time for characters that are actually part of the story. You can have 1500 spider people chilling in the background and taking part in chase scenes, but focusing on them is a waste; it doesn't progress the story. This is different from an event that directly affects Miles, like when he saves the police chief in another dimension. I know you're just going to comment again saying what an idiot I am and not pay attention to anything I've said, but I tried.

@unrighteous8745 Dude, the whole point in your original comment was that the story essentially wasn't for you. You said it yourself, you wanted a smaller minded story with a smaller cast. At no point was I saying you were stupid for wanting this. It's what I presume you usually like and you were disappointed with what you saw. All I'm saying is that just because it's what you wanted And it's not what you got. it does not mean that the story itself or the writers are at fault, nor does it make it a flaw.

The discrimination is so high that many trans* people are driven to suicide unfortunately. Representation in media and normalizing their existence saves lives. Sure, mexican people can face discrimination as well and representation of them in media is important as well, but I don't think the comparison in the video works. Anyway, still a good video. At this point, I'm genuinely interested in hearing about your favorite movies, so that I can meticulously scrutinize each minute detail, potentially labeling a film as subpar, all without delving into the underlying character nuances. Moreover, it's worth noting that Gwen isn't necessarily portrayed as transgender. The narrative of self-discovery and embracing one's identity isn't an exclusive theme for transgender individuals. Disclosing personal struggles to parents is not confined to the LGBTQ+ community; it's a universal character trope that manifests more frequently within this group. A valid point of critique could revolve around Miles effortlessly evading every incarnation of Spider-Man, or perhaps scrutinizing the pacing. It's essential to focus on substantial critique rather than succumb to the opinions of certain individuals on platforms like Twitter or the likes of Ben Shapiro, who might exploit the opportunity to disparage what they consider a 'woke' movie, in this case, merely because Gwen is speculated to be transgender. Trans individuals undoubtedly face discrimination and misinformation, as do members of the LGBTQ+ community. However, it's crucial to recognize that younger generations are generally more accepting of these themes. Your fixation on the controversy surrounding Gwen's alleged transgender identity seems disproportionate. Instead, consider acknowledging that even if Gwen were transgender, it would have minimal impact on the story, except for providing representation for those in the trans community. Constructive criticism is valid, and there are certainly aspects of the movie that warrant scrutiny, such as Miles effortlessly navigating challenges. Yet you just sound like a tiktok hog complaining about something your messiah Ben Shapiro pointed out.

The way I always define woke is like this: Progressive (in the context of story-telling) = including progressive talking points, dealing with issues progressives deal with, dealing with political and social stuff that progressives irl deal with, and, SUPER IMPORTANTLY, doing so with sincerity, nuance, understanding of the topic, and while offering something interesting about it to the viewer/reader/whatever you call the consumer of your story. Woke = dealing with the same issues but in an insincere, lazy way that lacks nuance and is basically either just a platform for an ideological message or, even worse, just an attempt to appear progressive and virtuous - virtue signalling. A great example of this: the recent Doctor Who stuff. Russel T. Davies, the showrunner, changed a wheelchair-bound villain, Davros, to no longer be in a wheelchair because, and I quote: "He's a wheelchair user who is evil. And I have problems with it. There is a long history with associating disability with evil! So, this is how we see Davros now, it's 2023." Russel is not disabled in any way. Actual, real-life, disabled people who have to use a wheelchair chewed him out for this on X and in the KZbin comments under the officially published behind the scenes. Or how the same show had a trans woman and a cis woman tell a gender-fluid alien who was literally a woman just a few hours, maybe days prior: "Shame you're not a woman anymore. A male-presenting Timelord could never understand this!" Given who they're talking to, the line even becomes friendly fire against trans people, specifically trans men. Even if it weren't, this is not progressive, this is just an ideological moment of misandry that, by the virtue of its idiotic writing, attacks trans men as well.

Good video. But I think it's a bit of both. "Woke" is shorthand for "insertion of liberal or left-leaning political talking points," and usually comes in a post-modern, subversive form meant to challenge the tropes we've had for a while. Problem is, storytelling and mythology have been the way they've been for thousands of years, so changes to it, on the basis on wanting to be "new" doesn't work. It's why films like Last Jedi feel so unfulfilling. They still adhere to the Monomyth Structure (mostly), but have lost the plot on a lot of heroic archetypes because the storytellers don't know what makes heroes heroes anymore. It's a complicated idea, which is why "woke" is used to encapsulate it, but misappropriated. It's not woke to have a black character in a movie, but it IS woke to have a black replacement of a white character when the reverse would almost never happen. Double standards like that are a byproduct of wokeness. If anyone is still confused by "woke," think about what a reverse-woke film would be: a story about blond Aryan people, all completely noble and virtuous, living in a crime-ridden city where every single non-white person is depicted in some kind of negative light. The villain is a minority who seems animalistic and cruel to the bone, by his nature. And when he hurts the perfect white family, and the law does nothing to stop him, the males of the family resort to vigilantism to hunt him and his gang down. Now whether or not that sounds like a kickass movie, it would be called "problematic" very quickly. But -- white families exist. Black criminals exist. This is a story that could happen in real life (and sometimes does) but that's not the point. The point is that some audiences may not like how their group is represented. In the case of Spider-Verse, the only prominent white character that plays an active role in the story, Peter B. Parker, is mostly absent from the second film. And when he's around, he's dressed in pink and takes on a motherly role, babysitting his daughter and weirdly opting to take her into a dangerous situation. In a vacuum, that's just fun and silly. But given our cultural landscape today, where white heroes, especially our legacy ones, are routinely humiliated, deconstructed and retired (Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones, Doctor Who) this isn't a good look. It feels deliberate. Consider also the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. White men were a prominent part of the whole saga up until the Sequels, where the only main white men are villains or old/useless (to be killed off). We can argue endlessly about this topic, especially with how minorities were nearly absent in the other trilogies, but that always depicted the demographics of the audiences. Audiences for nerd franchises in the countries in which they were made are majority white. And still, these franchises had international appeal. Lord of the Rings, the whitest and manliest work of fiction from the last century, had international appeal with a cast of only white people, before the movies were even made. The pushback of "woke" to cure "problematic" is always going to be uphill because these were stories and characters that people liked ALREADY. Changing some elements to deliberately tear down and deconstruct and subvert what we used to love is rarely applauded except by those who weren't diehard fans to begin with, who welcome inserting their ideas into places it doesn't belong. Consider anime. A mostly Asian cast in the vast majority of cases, with an international appeal. I need hardly tell you of the huge Latino fanbases for anime which hardly ever depicts Latino characters anyway. Most of these hobbies and franchises never needed to depict "everyone" on screen. Doing so feels forced in many cases. This is why the term "forced diversity" was coined and has yet to be disproven. Sorry for the wall of text. Good review of the film. I was let down by it after liking the first movie (watched it before I caught onto the subversive messaging in media, generally). It was much too long to be only a first part with no real climax.

I didn’t read all your comment, so apologies if you addressed this, but a line that stuck out to me was that minorities were mostly absent from the first two Star Wars trilogies, when I’d disagree. Pretty sure all the clones are minority characters. You also had Mace, jango, boba, and lando. Though for background characters you could be right, haven’t watched it in a long time. Like sure the majority of the main cast that were human were white, but that’s kinda to be expected to some extent for the era they were made in. There were, however, quite a few minority characters who played decent sized roles in the first two trilogies.

@samk7400 You're not wrong at all. My point is more that you don't NEED a huge helping of minorities for any movies made by white people for a majority-white audience. European myths feature European characters. Lack of foreigners isn't racism; it's just the nature of stories since we first started telling them. When it's forced in a manner that is unrealistic for what the story is meant to be (like a historical drama about indigenous Europeans, or an adaptation of a fictional work written by Europeans), then it's an automatic distraction because the decision is almost never made for organic, in-universe reasons. It's done because someone in the production pipeline demanded it be so. You ever ask for their reasoning, at worst they skirt around DEI and say something like "we hired the best actor for the role" which is doubtful in some cases. Depending on the role, it shouldn't be open to certain people. Much like how I wouldn't cast a wheelchair-bound dwarf with facial tattoos as Superman, I also wouldn't cast an African as Doctor Who. And yet, the latter case occurs and objection is treated as illegitimate criticism.

What are talking about? Honest to god it feel like your speaking out of your ass. First of all where are you getting your information from, random people, online scholars or general knowledge. Woke can't really be defined , its a term made up on the internet used to insult pieces of media that a person disagrees with on a political level. Also what are you talking about with " storytelling and mythology have been the way they've been for thousands of years, so changes to it, on the basis on wanting to be "new" doesn't work." Are you like a fucking alien or something? You speak so authoritatively on subjects you can't possibly have experience with outside of third party KZbin videos, like how can you believe that for thousands of years stories in the western world have had a similar story structure and all it took to bring it down was the creation of a shitty star wars story about a women fighting a galactic empire to destroy that thousand year tradition? Also another point what do you mean by modern writers can't write heroes? There are hundreds of thousands of writers and storytellers there not a monolith just because there's a bunch of shitty superhero movies now doesn't mean the whole industry is dead. "It's a complicated idea, which is why "woke" is used to encapsulate it, but misappropriated. It's not woke to have a black character in a movie, but it IS woke to have a black replacement of a white character when the reverse would almost never happen. Double standards like that are a byproduct of wokeness." First of all what about the people who do attribute having black, gay or trans characters in a piece of media as woke? Do they just not exist or do you disavow them? Also replacement of characters actors have always have happened in media and always will which is not entirely due to politics. "In the case of Spider-Verse, the only prominent white character that plays an active role in the story, Peter B. It feels deliberate" What is your point here? It makes you feel uncomfortable so it's bad writing? also heroes and stories have always been deconstructed that will always happen with a popular story trope or general component. Wow your amazing! You made an actual point that can be argued about. I agree stories can have appeal no matter the demographics of the cast but that's not common nor needed for a good story. The changing of a characters race is has been a generally non-existent issue for year that has been happening probably since the beginning of storytelling and isn't necessarily bad for the story. In reality your points make no sense , you come off as ignorant on issues you have no understanding of and seemingly uncomfortable with change in general as shown with your weird comment on peter being shown as a dad.

When I watched the movie I couldn't understand the hype, yeah the animation was great,a few jokes here and there were great but mostly the entire movie was badly written. These so called interaction scenes that were supposed to be emtional were cringe asfuck and the characters this time were just straight up terrible. The pregnant afro spider woman riding around in a bike? I mean who came up with that shit? And the indian spiderman was worse coupled with the spider punk. Most jokes were recycled from internet memes. It's a mediocre film with terrible writing, characters amd plot. Into the spiderverse was much much better than this.

Diversity and Representation works when it has purpose and the character’s personality and story goes beyond what they represent, Pav and Hobie for example. On the other hand Spider Woman only exists in this film to be the representation for strong and empowered diverse women. Most of her screen time showed her to be bossy, mean, and cold. When really they could’ve really played into the motherly aspect of the character and had her be a maternal figure to Gwen. Hell maybe they could’ve even revealed her to be Miguel’s love interest and had her more involved with his backstory which would’ve created a more intimate and interesting dynamic between the two characters.
