Is drifting on Assetto Corsa realistic? What challenges does a real drifter have to overcome to enjoy sim drifting, and the big question: is it worth it?

Follow along as I try some of my first sim drifting on Assetto Corsa using my new Fanatec CSW gear (Wheel, Ebrake, 7-speed H-pattern shifter, Gas/Brake/Clutch Pedals) and my $40 DIY racing cockpit. In this video I talk about whether or not Assetto feels realistic compared to my basic but well-sorted 300whp grassroots car with its Parts Shop Max limit break steering angle kit.
In this video I use the Tando Buddies 180SX with completely stock settings on the Assetto "Drift" track included with the basic game. While I've been drifting real cars for over 15 years, I'm a total beginner at sim drifting and without VR or a rig that simulates G-forces I can only evaluate the realism to a certain degree...but for a first attempt it's not too bad!
In future sim drifting videos I'll challenge myself to drift new tracks and new cars, including your requests so drop me a comment on something to try!

I went the other way, about a year with Assetto, G25, going from single monitor all the way to a Rift DK2. Went to a drift event a friend was running, asked if he'd let me do one session having never even actually driven a RWD car, just to see. After the only run I did he was convinced I had some experience from somewhere else. Didn't believe I'd gathered all that in a sim. Well, it's kinda what it's for. Hardware and setup is very important.

@@dumyjobby same here. I have slipped on dust withy my car a few years ago. The the car started to turn out of the road (right side). And suddenly i pulled the E-break with counter turned wheels, when i starded to turn back, then i foored the pedal (fwd). So I've fixed my fault in seconds without any thinking. Maybe this wasn't the proper way to get back in control, but saved my car, because i had no more chances there. This is what sims give us. We don't need to experiment so much with our cars. And it is much cheaper in sims

I'm not even much of a drifting focused driver, but I will tell you that when I do it VR makes it amazing. It's interesting to hear the opposite perspective of mine. I learned to drift in sims, and then took my experience from sims into the real world. For me, it was nearly a seamless transition. I found that all of the techniques I'd taught myself in sims could be applied in the real world to achieve the same result. The only problem I had in real cars was that I was a little bit too twitchy when approaching full lock. This "technique" actually did help me keep the car unsettled and sideways for longer, but it is also a great way to make your passenger feel nauseous lol. I think my twitchiness came from the fact that it doesn't matter how good your sim racing setup is, there's going to be a little less granularity in your inputs versus real life, simply because they're digital devices which must return specific values. Whereas a cars steering wheel is entirely analog, there's no latency or granularity to worry about in your inputs, and of course you get the feedback from g-forces. IMO I think moving from sims to the real world is probably an easier transition than moving from the real world to sims.

@KameTrick 3 жыл бұрын
K31TH3R cool to hear about your perspective, that’s about how I imagined it would be👍🏻 I agree completely, moving from having that analog input and gforces and REAL head motion 😂 to going in sim is unnatural and takes a while to acclimate to😅

Was super cool to hear your perspective. I had very little drifting experience before I got into sims, mostly drove FWD cars for most of my life. I learned how to drift in various sims (Assetto Corsa being one of them), and then got a Mustang shortly after. When I first took it for some drift sessions (mostly in the snow, but a few times on rainy days), I am sure it definitely came much more naturally to me than it would have had I not had the sim experience. I was half decent at it, one of my very first times ever trying! With that said, I'm nowhere near as good as you, IRL or in sim, but I loved seeing how easily it translated for you!

I think Assetto Corsa does work as a Drifting Simulator. I started doing it with the same Fanatec wheel, hand brake and shifter as you. I own a 350z with LSD and straight pipes, manual gear. I am not a pro as you are, not even close but, I sure can drift thanks to this simulator. The weight shifting and the force feedback that comes from the game were very similar to real life drifting.

Thanks, yeah it would have been cool to connect more at NCDP2018, I have a drift vlog from that event 😆 This video is old and I have some updated opinions (I need to make a new video on this) but sim is definite a way to stay sharp between events. I was already a great solo driver and able to do semi-acceptable “party event tandem” (not super close but you also rarely crash type stuff) and sim has helped me become even more skilled and confident, so it’s not just for beginners IMO

I can't thank you enought! I allways wondered if there were any chance to make a proper drift gaming. But the problem was that neither my friends or I were drifter, so we never would were going to know if the game was realistic or not, and suddenly from God's know where I find your video where you explain that Assetto Corsa is close enought to the real behaviour of a drift car. So, thanks one more time.

Real Head Motion is very helpful when on a single monitor, as I am also. I had to focus on steering with the foot a lot, throttle control was a big one when I started. It certainly seems easier transitioning from sim drifting to IRL, then IRL to sim. They are a great practicing tool!
@KameTrick
@KameTrick 5 жыл бұрын
JmanBZ Thanks for the tip! I completely agree about the transition. Going from sim to real, you do have to account for the gforces and get used to them, but ultimately you are adding additional information and feedback to the driver, whereas going from real to sim you take it away. Less info is always harder...trying sim or IRL with ear plugs or heavy winter gloves makes it more difficult as you get less feedback than you’re used to.

Before i sold all of my equipment ( i had a brand new 30nm Direct Drive Wheel) i thought "hey, you have 1 week left with this wheel before i will sell it, so lets so something what i never did before - drifting". I drifted sometimes but my main focus was racing .. But then when trying it out with the DD Wheel, i fell in love with it. Especially with the "Drift M3", it was awesome. There was a double apex fast right hander, drive in, give it a bit of steer input Or change the balance of the car with throttle/brake and there you go. The feel in the wheel was ridiculous, especially when slowing down a bit for the 2nd apex, you could literally feel how the weight shifts, how light the wheel gets etc... Its of course not like real, and it will never be, but that 1 week drifting with my DD was really nice (maybe its as nice with other wheels swell, aim definitely not making ads for DD wheels, in fact, in my opinion they are not worth it, you will be as fast and have as much fun with "normal" wheels aswell..)
@KameTrick
@KameTrick 5 жыл бұрын
ICEMANZIDANE decelerating in drift and decreasing radius corners are super fun to slide through and catch the perfect line IMHO, I’d like to try a DD wheel at some point...but I agree they probably aren’t worth the extra cost for drifting at least, because a lot of the time you aren’t even holding the wheel in drift 😅

I find that when you can adjust the ingame camera to move according to G-forces (some games are better with this than others, I can't actually remember how it is in AC) it makes things a lot easier. Even though you can't feel the G-forces, you can more instinctively pick up the weight transfers from seeing the slight camera movement and the vehicle tilting on screen.
@KameTrick

Audiojack I would agree with that in general, so view shift in heavy braking, axel and cornering. Now that I have more experience with it, I’m pretty sure AC can do that in the first person view👍🏻

Great video! I got myself a sim before I went to try it in real life, well I sort of tried it before but I was super shitty as any beginner. I have to say that trying to learn as much as you can on the sim before going out on the streets is the way to go. The small things in drifting, like when to steer and where to steer, you can learn them while crashing a hundred times in sim so that you don't have to crahs in real life. Please don't get me wrong I am by no means a drifter, far from it. But I drive an SLK 320 (the old one) and I can get a little sideways if the corner is right, without dying or breaking my car. Going from sim to real life made things so much easier, cause I actually had a feeling for the accelerations and also I just used my ordinary office chair, which constantly rolled away on me.
@KameTrick
@KameTrick 5 жыл бұрын
Peter Griffin for sure dude! I totally agree, if you could choose between investing $2000 in a beat up drift missile or a super nice sim rig, you’ll always be better off getting the sim until you’re super good. And you won’t spend all your time breaking and fixing the car which can be a constant struggle even without crashing haha Thanks for watching!🙌🏻

Clockwork621 I didn’t know over a year ago when I made this vid, it I’ve realized that the unrealistic slow transition speed suit the unrealistic slow wheel self steer of everyone using Logitech it TMX wheels pretty well...so it’s “wrong” but most people’s hardware is too 🤷🏻‍♂️ I was slow even on a Fanatec setup because I was brand new to sim drifting and my IRL experience had me waiting for weight shift that would never come to do any of my inputs. I’m still making sim drift videos but over been using WDTS almost exclusively for close to a year now. I think what’s interesting about sim racing vs drifting in real life is that I’ve only really done heavy sim drifting. It actually translates really well in real life but I feel like I have no understanding of how much throttle to apply in real life. I’m almost always underpowered in big slides. It’s interesting that you use more feeling from g-force than steering wheel where I do exactly the opposite from doing more sim drifting. Thanks for the video.
@KameTrick
@KameTrick 4 жыл бұрын
Christian Gotsch awesome comment, it’s been cool talking with heavy simmers about what’s challenging for them when adapting to IRL. I do pay attention to the wheel too, but IRL it’s maybe 1/3 of where I get key info from, tops. There’s also feeling rear tire traction through the vibrations coming up into the seat, and the whole attitude of the car as it gains angle which you can feel in a whole-body sense (weight shift)

Let me just tell you the first time you are in game and blasting through a corner and turn your head to look out your window and see another car right there and use that feeling of depth to know exactly how close you can get, not to mention just in general turning your head to look in the direction you actually want to go, complete game changer to any monitor based setup. You'll someone to introduce you to the game though since the like 3 drift cars that the game has, dont drift on the default setup. + the standard tracks are pretty boring and you should probably stick to custom layouts. Btw, the most used car for drifting has like 250hp which cant be changed on most servers, this makes for some good tandeming once you find some good people. @@KameTrick I still have a gear-driven G27. In my opinion, it's not as much the wheel's as it is LFS' fault. Drifting in rFactor 2 and BeamNG feels more natural. In fact, I stopped using anything but BeamNG.drive for drifting. Oh, and I think that AC is even worse for drifting than LFS (which is moderately decent).
@KameTrick
@KameTrick 5 жыл бұрын
Get Sideways maybe I’ll make a comparison video at some point...I think AC probably has an equal or larger audience/player base than LFS these days, no idea how big Beamng is (or how new/old) 🤔
@getsideways7257
@getsideways7257 5 жыл бұрын
@@KameTrick Well, the AC's audience is simply huge, far outnumbering pretty much anything else, and if you are going for the numbers, sure that's the way to go. The problem with BeamNG's audience is not even the numbers, but the percentage of those who use it as a "crash simulator" and expect to see crashes instead of proper driving or drifting. You could, however, make AC videos for the crowd while enjoying BeamNG time for yourself (if you'd make a video, that would be great though). One thing I've noticed about this sim is that it pretty much requires framerates in excess of 80 or even 90 fps for the steering to be immediate enough. Even at the "standard" 60 fps drifting gets more difficult than it needs to be thanks to the steering wheel reacting quarter to third of a second behind your actual input. Here is a test video I recorded after bringing the graphics down significantly for the run: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGitkptpdspseNU I felt much more in control at higher fps there (the video is at much lower fps, because I switched to the highest graphics prior to recording the video off the replay). The devs did post, however, that it's best to switch the Windows' Game Mode off for it to function properly. I'll try that later. Will also try other tweaks too. While I also hide the car's steering wheel from my view when I drive, switching it on for a bit can be useful to determine your input lag in a particular sim: just start turning the steering wheel left and right quickly and take note of how far behind the virtual wheel gets. You can even record both the controller wheel and the virtual wheel with a camera while doing that and calculate the actual input lag between you turning your wheel in the opposite direction and the virtual wheel changing it's direction also. Like, if your camera recorded everything at 60 fps, every frame lasts around 0.0167 seconds. If it takes eight frames for the virtual wheel to start turning in the same direction as the controller wheel, your input lag is 0.0167 times 8, equals around 133 milliseconds (0.133 s).

It changes the cars drastically, not to mention you can use semi slicks which fixes all the complaints he had. Then again, he said that he used default set ups for all mods and cars so you can't blame him for not liking them, I wouldn't either. Hopefully he remakes the vid sometime with some changes to the setups ^^

I loved the concept of the video. and as other people in the comments have mentioned, there are alot of extra tools like RealHeadMotion etc. to give that extra bit of immersion. Something i however didnt see posted yet is that you can manually adjust the forcefeedback settings of your wheel within Assetto Corsa, this is also known as a "Lut". When i first started to learn drifting on assetto, the wheel settings felt fine for me. but as i started to get more experience under my belt, i felt the wheel was restricting me to learn more. i changed my Lut from a guide on Racedepartment, and this completely made me rediscover the abilities of my wheel, please consider making this adjustment for a more realistic feel and for an even more comprehensive review. Thanks! (Guide to LUT: www.racedepartment.com/downloads/rasmusps-lut-guide-for-g27-29-and-dfgt.16799/ Make sure to use the 50% Gain Lut.)

Tobias van T. Hey, sorry for the slow reply, we had an IRL drift event Saturday and I’m usually not very active on social the day after one (tired and unpacking the car, etc)😅 That’s an awesome tip, I had no idea about those setting options! I’ll probably split the difference and focus on getting a little bit more experience driving while adjusting FFB settings in the wheel itself, and then once I feel like I have a solid baseline I’ll start experimenting with the LUT settings. I appreciate it!🙌🏻

Would drifting in a sim translate to real life? Seriously though, good drifts! I spent about 2 hours on that track with the BMW E30 drift when I got my wheel.
