I read some comments supporting Hyundai, but my experience with a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe is not good at all. Hyundai issued an "interim" recall on the engine. They don't have a fix for it. I took it to a dealer to check on a noise coming from the engine and it stalled when they were doing a test ride. Avoid any Hyundai or Kia with the Theta engine. The NHTSA forced a recall of hundreds of thousands of these cars because the engines were locking up in traffic and causing accidents. A fine of $210 million was part of the recall. The NHTSA was not concerned with the engine problems, the recall was a safety recall because so many of the cars stalled in traffic. 400,000 vehicles with the Gamma, Nu, Theta II, and Lambda engines from 2012 to 2016 were recalled. The engine design seems to be okay, but manufacturing defects caused the failures.

I was a little skeptical at first but got a good deal on one of these from Hertz car sales. It now has 112K miles and a clicking half shaft cost me $250 dollars to replace at a friend's shop. No others repairs!!! No squeaks, no rattles. Great gas mileage. I would buy another in a heart-beat. My mechanic buddy says he has found Hyundai cars made after 2006 to be robust and very reliable... AND cheap and easy to repair.

2008 Sonata with 215k and counting. Nothing major fixed, just basic maintenance so far. Great vehicle.

I had an 09 Sonata. I wrecked it with 170k on it but it was still running and driving great at the time.

Happy to hear this from Scotty. I just bought a 2022 Tucson, and trading my 2020 Cadillac XT6 for a 2021 Highlander Platinum tomorrow. We should be all set for a little while.

I’ve had more than five Elantras, two of them were over 295k, one was sent to a junker because it had been leaking fluid out over time, and the other went into a rear end accident. Both of them, the transmissions were solid, both the 4-speed auto, and the five speed manual! Solidly build, the beta II engine is, but the Theta-II 2.4L engines are the ones to watch out for...
