I twist my dreads twice a year and wash them barely style idk less then 10 a year without twisting for the past 4 years and my dreads grew thicker and longer and healthier. So different hair different situations

I know this is old but i feel its not that retwisting every 2-3 weeks is the problem but how tight they are being retwisted. Too much of anything is bad even when it comes to our hair 💁

if your going long periods of time without resisting . all u have to do is keep it clean seperate and if your hair grows away from the loc just wrap that loose hair around your loc and keep it moving I semi freeform and that's my routine

The more nappy and kinky the hair the better.. I don't twist anymore but I will gather loose hair and put them with existing locks to keep the locks growing strong and thick..twisting for me thinned my locks. Great video and advice

Six weeks was certainly too long to go in between maintenance. My new growth grows outside my Locs. My hair would grow out into an Afro by my next appointment. I thought I was protecting my hair but it started to become thinner and thinner. I didn’t know why. You have confirmed what I have learned the hard way. Thank you for sharing.

Did you palm roll in between hair washing? That's usually how you keep the hairs within the locs
@thanattyone876 жыл бұрын
I started my locs with a comb coil twist. I've been growing them for four yrs and haven't retwisted. Before your locs start to marry you might want to determine how thick you want your locs. If they get thicker than what you want, you can pop loc them but make sure your hair is wet or your going to be in a lot of pain. Also keep in mind when you freeform your roots become a lot thicker so it will be harder to retwist.
@theemoryquince7 жыл бұрын
Super informative! Thanks so much! I have a couple locs around my head that thinned when I was trying to go two and three months without retwisting, and now it makes sense as to HOW they did that. They aren't too thin, but they didn't keep the same thickness as the rest of the loc. I've been retwisting at least once per month lately, and I feel they've gotten thicker. I believe diet change brought some of the strength, but undoubtedly the shorter times between retwists helps! Great knowledge to have!

OH MY GOODNESS!!! This makes perfect sense! I two strand twisted my hair on March 14 of this year. I have yet to retwist my hair 😳😳😳 I called myself semi freeforming (I keep the locs separated) but I have noticed thinning at the roots. Not drastic thinning, but enough to get my attention. I think it's time to switch up my hair regimen. Thank you so much for this video...you saved my locs!
@adilyahbatelohim14174 жыл бұрын
When I started semi freeforming my locs totally thinned out as the new growth was not going around the loc by itself, so instinct had me wrap that growth around the thin part and start retwisting again. Freeforming wasn't for my hair.
@jalex44877 жыл бұрын
My locs constantly grow together. Going more than 3 or 4 weeks between retwisting and I will have to separate and pop my locs so much. Even when wet it feels like they are tearing and breaking my hair strands too much. I've found my own routine of retwisting every 2nd or 3rd wash is best for me.

I had the same issue. Shampooing every 4 to 7 days has made a huge difference. My locs are easier to maintain, remaining ‘unmarried’ for the most part and are sufficiently hydrated without any daily spritzing. Also in between shampoos I do root checks for loose hairs and gently wrap any around the parent loc…this helps to prevent marrying especially during the times I exceed my 4-7 day shampoo schedule. After every shampoo I oil my scalp and check for loose hairs gently wrapping any to the parent…then under the dryer for 45 minutes. Every 4 to 6 weeks I’ll do a full blown retwist. This routine has helped my locs and roots to become much much stronger/sturdy. 5:16

I know this is an old video but sooooo needed! My locs are only a year and 6 months old and I was getting scared because I can't seem to keep a retwist. Come to find out my hair doesn't grow with my locs so I have to constantly reincorporate the hair at my roots back into my locs so the base remains strong.
@missnicole1096 жыл бұрын
My hair grows a little out of the loc. I simply wrap the hair around the loc, so that it doesn't migrate into another one. I'm attempting to go at least two months with no retwist, so far so good. Just wash, oil, and separate.
@Ang.1437 жыл бұрын
I can go no longer than 8 weeks... I learned the hard way with thinner locs after 8 months of free forming. If I retwist every 4 weeks my locs do appear thinner and more compact. It really is a balance that's unique for everyone.

lord where was this video soon when I needed it. Lol I was trying to give my roots a “break” from retwisting so my on the verge of thinning locs could get stronger but I realize that I may be doing more harm than good. My husband was looking at me all crazy lol but trying to be supportive. He’s just happy I retwisted again. I mean I know some would grow out their hair by not retwisting but my hair gets tight and matted real quick and it sucks up oil like crazy... Normally I would wash my hair every month but I may have to split up my washing schedule in between visiting my stylist.

My daughter's hair grows away from her locs. Thought also if I didn't retwist so often it would thicken up. Yesterday one of her back locs looked as if it was going to fall off. I'm thinking now to retwist on a better schedule. Right now she's every 2 or 3 months. I want to help them flourish not fall out. So 6 to 8 wks should help. She actually likes a shabby scalp like me..😉. Thanks

Yes👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 style less and your hair will get thicker. If you leave tight styles in your hair too often and you extend your retwists more than a month you’re asking for trouble. Even if you extend your retwist you still have to maintain your locs. Retwisting monthly should not thin out your hair unless you’re styling too often throughout the month already. Great video!

Thank you and this is incredibly true and informative. I've been following you for from your sisterlocks days into your thicker locs and i wish this video was out a year ago. I was of that belief to let it go and it will strengthen and obviously that was not the case. While i tried on my own, i did go to different loctitions and it was never explained to be that my texture hair needed a stricter regiment. With my moving coast to coast and stress, my hair was showing all signs of needing help, and i asked the last loctition, can my hair recover, sadly, she said no and i big chopped that they and have been since. My goal was and always is healthy hair. My scalp and hair stronger and i would love to start my locs again, but i need help. I'm thankful for this video and just looking for a professional to help me along the way achieve healthy, happy locs.

Gemini_Magik did you notice after your retwist your roots were thinner? I think mines grow the same way because I went months without retwisting and some of my roots were a lot thinner once I finally retwisted my hair.

Olivia P I haven't experienced that. The longest I went is 3 months. I think that's too long at this stage for my hair. I embrace frizz but I do feel better after a retwist because I feel like the hairs are going where they are supposed to.

I use to Palm roll then noticed the interlocking lasted longer. So if I'm going to try a set schedule I don't want to be interlocking it that often.
