I've seen Mariah Carey sing with plenty of people that she can't out sing. Whitney Houston back in her heyday when they sang "when you believe" live at the Oscars before Whitney Houston completely lost her voice from drugs and smoking. Jennifer Hudson when she sang with Mariah Carey last year on Mariah's remake of her Christmas song, "oh santa" . And Patti LaBelle when she sang "got to be real" at the 1998 Hammerstein Ballroom special. When Patti LaBelle and Mariah Carey hit those high notes, you couldn't even hear Mariah Carey. 😳.. It's a whole different ballgame when you have to sing live and you don't have special sound enhancements to help strengthen the volume of your voice. 🤷🏿‍♂️ look up her last performance at the Oscars with Whitney Houston when they sang When You Believe ,and her live performance with Patti LaBelle singing got to be real and you'll see what I mean.

@@fazzyvlogs3650 Exactly! In that grammys performance Mariah had problems with her mic. It was way lower than Whitney. The Oprah performance we can see that they don't overpower each other. Their voices just have different weights. JHud and Patti are very powerful singers. Their voices will always overpower other singers 😂. That doesn't mean one is better than the other. Just different voices, different techniques. They were giving their best to deliver a great duet for all of us. They all respect each other. It was never a competition.

Mariah is really underrated for throwing harmonies and vocal layers in her songs.. Most of the time in the studio she will do the layers and harmonies by herself so she got all the parts in her head during live performance the backup vocals will take over the harmonies.. The backup vocal guy is trey lorenz mariah's bestie since before she became a star

Right? I have no doubt she has a temper and has had run ins with people in the industry. She has off days where she might not want to entertain fans. But she must be a fundamentally decent person to have people on her team stand by her for decades. Even people who didn’t personally gel with her like Kelly Price have immense respect for her.

I've always said that Mariah sounds "weaker" than Celine and Whitney because she makes it sound so easy compared to them. In reality, her belts are just as strong. Moreover, she plays around with her voice so much before, during and after a belt.

Whitneys and Celines voices are stronger and Mariahs voice is softer but like you said she can do so much with it. Her vocals runs and belting not forget the whistle register. She is also a songwriter and does mostly everything herself and acutally you can hear it when she sings.

@@ladymay30 I don't agree that their voices are stronger. Mariah has more range so unless they can be compared in range she has the overall strength in her vocals. When you speak about strength you contradict yourself when you mention all the aspects of her voice that the other two don't have but we won't get into it. Mariah can belt easier than they can so in my opinion her voice is just as strong and much more effortless sounding. We can agree that Mariah is a BEAST compared to them in terms of musicality. Mariah is the only artist out of that trio based on everything you said and we all know. Artistically, it's undeniable.

Mariah’s tone remains mostly consistent as the note rises, which makes her songs sound deceptively easy. She can go up up and up without much change in audible tension. Whitney on the other hand, had a tone that exploded dramatically in the 5th octave, which made her going up there sound much more physical and strong. Celine’s tone gets nasal as she goes higher. Mariah does have the “smallest” voice out of the three, but that’s like talking about the shortest mountain in the Himalayas. It’s still damn tall, and Mariah’s voice is still pretty damn big and powerful.

My original comment simply stated that Mariah can belt and make it sound like honey so it doesn't even sound like a belt. Compared to Whitney and Celine who sounds like they're belting and it's obvious and it sounds great because you can hear the power and the tone in theirs. Why are you hurt? They just sound different. I said that I always thought that Mariah was weaker in belting or didn't belt as much as them and I realized I was wrong and hearing it differently now. This is a critique on how I heard Mariah sing. Those singers are her amazing backup crew. They’ve been together for decades now especially Trey Lorenz (the pose guy). He’s been with her since her debut album (he’s the middle one in that all in your mind whistle rehearsal). She did the I’ll be there cover with him and also wrote stuff with him for his debut independent album in the 90s.

You absolutely have to see Mariah’s reflections (care enough) live at home for the holidays 2001. This was in the glitter era right after her mental breakdown (2001), a very traumatic time in her life. In the years leading up to this 1997-2000, Mariah’s voice sounded tired and she was struggling the most in her career to sing during these years due to stress in her life. Howeverr, a lot of us lambs will agree that her tone improved and in the rainbow era (1999-2000) was one her best tones ever ! This mental breakdown caused mariah to take a break and rest her voice, and with the resting of her voice, it literally boomed. This performance is filled with effortlessly powerful and resonant belts. A lot of us lambs will also say this this was a new prime for Mariah ! You have to see it !

I'm confused as to how when she sings acapella her voice sounds so much more round and full than when her newer songs are recorded and mixed. It almost makes her sound more muted and I like being punched in the face with the sound when she's belting 😂

These people are crazy. She was literally singing in '98 onward but with more rasp. And live whistles have been served her entire career. She has nodules, Some days the voice will.fall short. That's all. Even in her "prime" when the whistles weren't there in a given day she'd just use chest voice or something & improvise.
