Showrunner: “We didn’t feel like being faithful.” Dan Slott: “It’s the most faithful MCU show yet!” Only one of these are true and it isn’t the second one.

First of all, I hate Jessica Gao's admission of laziness that She-Hulk is an unfaithful adaptation, a tv show on Disney+ that is meant to be a Marvel superhero product and a procedural legal comedy, yet insists on being neither. Second of all, I feel very bad for this paradox in which Dan Slott has been boxed. Either he takes the risk of being falsely accused of being a misogynist for telling her she was in the wrong and she is false to the character, or she is the real misogynist here against herself because of how badly she messed up in adapting She-Hulk, and thinks that being a woman of color gives her a free pass to insult white men in her show as many times as she wants, and base most of She-Hulk's attempts at comedy around that! Anyone who questions her methods or corrects her mistakes is supposedly the greater misogynist. Well, guess what? It does not excuse the obvious bad job she did because Jessica Gao and other She-Hulk writers are still going to be chastised by Marvel fans for self-centered writing about a self-centered main character, and more importantly, insulting the audience for whom they were hired to write and entertain by writing a completely different product for a completely different audience, or else no audience at all. The world and the events of She-Hulk are all about She-Hulk even though we know why it should not be all about her. So they should not have made the show all about them and their minor self-loathing problems if they wanted anyone who still cares about the MCU to like their adaptation of She-Hulk.

Even if we take his word for it, that doesn't make anything better. In fact, it makes matters worse because if we give him the benefit of the doubt, he's technically dissing his own set of comics because of the show's extremely poor quality. Also, to go on a small tangent, it astounds me that nobody is pointing out how misogynistic the show writers for She-Hulk are. They keep going with these expectations that people hate She-Karen 'cause she's a woman and then go on to project their misogyny with things like Intelligencia or simply how unlikable they made She-Karen. "People hate her 'cause she's a woman!" No, people hate her 'cause you created a misogynistic depiction of a female superhero to represent all female superheroes, and that's honestly disgusting.

So many creatives assume that the last adaptation of these origins is always the starting template, without considering the "why" of those choices. The why on Incredible Hulk 1996, the only prior attempt at an origin adaptation for her, is that was a 22 minute show that couldn't waste an episode on something NOT about a supervillain or other superhero fight. Having her origin be, ultimately, caused by non-superhero stuff that she wants to prosecute but is being distracted by this super-law junk? That gives it a bit more of an angle.

Titania sounds so cool in the Comics and I was really hoping she was faithfully adapted in the show, but of course she wasn't. It's so frustrating that the show was only made to "Own the Trolls" and it's having a negative effect on the character because people will think that's how she is in her Comics and appearances in cartoons. The biggest travesty of this show is the fact that they made complete fallacies of these originally awesome and interesting characters. This show could've brought so many of them to the limelight and showed off to the general public how cool the comic world can be. Instead it just reinforced stereotypes, fed trolls (which we all know you shouldn't do. Trolls literally won because of this), weakened Marvel as a whole, and pushed away people invested in Marvel and anyone potentially interested in comics in general. And to add: You two deserve far more subs and views. Been following for a little while now and so far I've agreed with everything stated. I'm sure other people have said this but I genuinely think the main writer (I still can't remember her name) was an outcast who never got to sit with the cool kids which why She-Hulk is treated like a self-insert and Titania is the stereotypical Mean Girl trying to foil her plans. Also, something tells me that Dan's tweet about her bring "comic accurate" is a ploy so people won't read the comics and thus they won't get a warhead sized backlash, as if that'll stop fans.

The writers crippled their own story, when they made the main villains "internet trolls." Don't they remember ANYTHING from the stories they enjoyed reading, watching, and playing (in the case of video games)? A hero or heroine is measured against the villain he or she fights. By making the villain so pathetic, the writers make She-Hulk pathetic in turn!

4:20 - frankly, the fact that it IS true, is why it stings. Because for the fans, for the built in audience that these shows and movies were originally TRULY made for - it pulls back the curtain. Way too harshly. It breaks the veil, and rips apart suspension of disbelief. You kill the magic, and then the show runner can be free to wonder why she's not getting a second season. We want to see these characters, actually comic accurate. We want to root for them, and we'll happily pay for the privilege. When it's done well, and right. To the tune of having made Marvel Studio's literal ungodly profit thus far. The key point in that formula, the contract if you want to apply Tort Law, is DO NOT break the magic. They can't call us "trolls" if they've actively hired someone who admitted openly she IS one. The thing is, Jen's POWERS were derivitive. And it took a LOT of work for skilled writers to create the reasons, within suspended disbelief that Jen WAS her own character and could stand on her own merit. There's a reason she's "not as strong" as The Hulk. That she's actively more articulate in most cases (barring Joe Fixit - or when Bruce has Hulk's body - or Professor Hulk) They went out of their way to explain it. To take apart the science, and the difference in their environment. To me, that's what they disrespect when they write her off as derivitive.

Like, dude, the fact that he's the one who read the She-Hulk comics and even wrote them himself means that he knows She-Hulk in the show ISN'T comic accurate; but yet, he has the gall to go on record to say that it is. For him to do that in a Tweet is very dishonest, misleading, and inauthentic. It frankly sounds to me like he was never a fan of the original She-Hulk comics he worked on, and that he wanted to write the character in the way he truly wanted her to be like. Honestly? I would've been ok with a superhero slice of life detective show, a simple little series that shows Jen learning to control her powers and helping her cousin find his sons. I know I said this in the other video but seriously, the show could start with Jen going off to take down this criminal organization. Bruce begs her not to go since he believes that it's a trap meant to kill her to get to him, to let him or one of the other Avengers handle it. Jen is revealed to not be on great terms with her cousin due to his previous disappearance but she still promises to be careful. Jen goes and there's an ambush, she gets badly hurt so Bruce gives her a blood transfusion, turning her into She-Hulk. The rest of the series could then be about her juggling her powers, the investigation, and her everyday life. Jen is at first unwilling to work with her cousin or her powers but, over time, she reconciles with her cousin, finds that she's actually really comfortable in her She-Hulk form, and they find the criminals that are holding Bruce's sons, leading to an epic Hulk and She-Hulk team up as they fight the villains.

Byrne's run on Sensational She-Hulk is one of my favorite comic series ever. I was hoping beyond hope that the show would do at least *SOME* amount of justice to the character and what makes her so fun and interesting. Every episode was like descending ever deeper into the bowels of Hell, from which no semblance of the original character or idea could possibly ever recover. To say I was disappointed would be a hilariously tragic understatement. What an absolute waste of such an incredible property.

"There's a lot of people who never read the comics, will never read the comics, and this is the only She-Hulk they know." That is so sad. Marvel doesn't even seem to _know_ really what they've done by ruining their own brand, or worse, they think they know and are happy having "fixed" such a "sexist" character.

Your videos on the show are hands down the best I've seen, since you're clearly very knowledgeable about the character and are criticizing from the point of view of someone who actually cares, and you're not using any of the the more...er...questionable takes coming from people who are just have a vitriolic ax to grind in general. This show is another example of a piece of media that was created more with the people they anticipated not liking it in mind than the people who wanted the show in the first place, which almost always leads to the haters feeling vindicated by a product that isn't designed for anyone to actually like on its own merits. The idea that She-Hulk owned the trolls is fucking ludicrous...what it actually did was give a huge fucking income boost to the anti-woke content creators those trolls rally around. They may as well have shipped a case of whiskey to Critical Drinker's house for all they ruined the day of people who were never going to like the show in the first place. Meanwhile they ignore the existence of actual fans of the character who just wanted the series to be something that lived up to what we feel the character deserves. Jessica Jones proved you can have a show about a female superhero that is loved by critics and fans alike and is a success by every measure. She-Hulk could have had that too, but instead what is the show's legacy actually going to be? What does it have to really be proud of if you don't think feeding trolls is an accomplishment?

I don't remember She-Hulk being this misandristic (and ironically misogynistic) in the comics/cartoons. The guy's doing an appeal to authority fallacy too, considering that iirc Into the Spiderverse isn't comic-book accurate but still delivered on Miles Morales as a unique character like in the comics (the initial disdain aside)

The "problem" with comic book characters is they have so many people working on them, so many different continuities that it is so open to interpretation. Even among fans, fun discussions can quickly devolve into pointless arguments over who is "right" about a character. So, even though I totally get what you are saying and I agree, it is really pointless to try to criticise this show's "accuracy" because it's too easy to get dragged into the weeds splitting hairs and such. Slott is just standing up for his professional colleagues, but he's not really wrong, just maybe not being open to a lot of true fans' opinions.

It really says a lot when even the show's defenders mainly argued that She-Hulk would probably either be proven to be in wrong or admit she made a mistake in her outburst towards Banner. Turns out that no, we really were supposed to think everyday problems like getting catcalled was as bad as everything Bruce went through.

I’ve read John Byrne, Dan Slott, and even Mariko Tamaki’s run on She-Hulk. At no point in any of the books was she a twerking troll feeder. The Intelligencia weren’t a bunch of frat boy dude bros. Titania wasn’t an airhead. Pugg wasn’t Malibu’s most wanted.

Hearing Slott puke out garbage like this really bums me out. I used to be something of a fan of his. I loved the 'Avengers: The Initiative' comic series he made in the late 2000s (Among other things, it introduced Komodo, who quickly became one of my favorite female superheroes). I personally met him at a convention in the mid- 2010s, and he seemed to be a pleasant enough fellow as we interacted. For him to have then so completely turned to the Dark Side in so many ways (As a writer, AND as a human being in general) over the last 3-4 years or so has made me so sad. It really is a shame.

When he says its "the most comic accurate," he just means it's comedic with 4th wall breaks that's it. Which is only a part of the character and her comics, its like saying MCU's Spider-man is the most comic accurate cause he got his powers while in high school and needs web shooters, while ignoring everything else the MCU changes.

To dissect his quote even more, "the most comic accurate MCU show" is a meaningless statement on Dan's part. To give Dan the benefit of the doubt, let's say She-Hulk is comically accurate to her series. How does Dan know She-Hulk is more accurate than Falcon and the Winter Soldier or WandaVision? He could say those shows change elements, but I could throw back that Intelligencia only shares the name with their comic counterpart and nothing more. I get that She-Hulk is the newest member of the over-hated female show/movie, but to play apologia like this is embarrassing.

I'd maybe take her claims that her life was more horrible than his because of cat calls more serious if she wasn't talking to Bruce frikkin' Banner. You know, the guy who got experimented on by his father, had the same father murder his mother and try to murder him while he was a child and tried to murder him again when he was an adult, who spent years and years running away from everyone who he knew and loved because he was terrified he'd flip out and hurt them or the people hunting him would hurt them instead? Who ate his gun when he just couldn't take it anymore and the Hulk wouldn't allow him to die?

I actually really like your She-Hulk takes and it's always a delight seeing you have posted something whether here or on twitter. It's the highlight of the discussion on this show, a discussion I can't seem to get enough of. I generally agree and you are very good at making your points concisely while hitting your major points without waffling. Excellent stuff. I think there are some things I'd argue are accurate in the sense that the idea is rooted in She Hulks history and for the MCU shows She-Hulk draws most heavily from the source material. With that said yeah a lot of it is reworked into something unrecognisable. My issue was always Jen and the things immediately surrounding her like her family outside Bruce. There are other characters who I came to learn are inaccurate through videos like yours though and I realised how badly the show did I actually think Titania's inferiority complex is a consistent idea across the show and comics. She definitely isn't as layered as in the comics but I think her need to one up Jen in the show seemed like something a woman who has been made to feel small before would do. She gets easily beaten in public in their first encounter and then she tries to claim her identity. Maybe a bit of a stretch but I can see it as a take on " there's only room for one strongest woman and it ain't you". Like if anyone should be regarded as the powerful "She-Hulk" it's her. Now a lot of this has to be inferred as subtext but I appreciate that unlike Jen Titania's core seems to at least get the basics of the character right. She isn't with Creel and doesn't seem to know Marsha. She isn't a supervillain and didn't get her powers from Doom. She also hasn't struggled with trying to leave villainy or battled cancer. She is far less compelling for not experiencing all this but a woman who was bullied all her life gaining superpowers and constantly trying to assert herself as no longer a victim? Trying to prove she is the strongest? I think that idea is echoed in Jameela's performance

The sad part is that the show could've been good id they actually use the source material and made her the fun slightly sarcastic but lovable, caring for both male and female fans by immersing us into her story while being aware of us even having an antagonistic but simplistic rival in Titania, constantly poking fun at the writer when getting into situations that is a little gratuitous but turns out to be a positive aspect to the situation at hand. And it could've introduced the Fantastic Four and Dr. Doom in flawless fashion. But nope.

I don't think Thanos motivation was good. The Snap was a stupid way to deal with overpopulation. He only does it once then gets rid of the Infinity Stones, the population of the universe would just double again in few decades, making what he did little more than a bandaid. At least trying to impress Death is an impressively psychotic reason for doing something psychotic like killing half of the universe.

I'm thankful for what you said about valid criticisms being lumped in with internet trolls and misogynists. It hurts when you genuinely are fascinated with good storytelling only to be told you are in the same crowd as the pricks who dump on a story just for having a prevalent woman in it. It's honestly kinda brilliant in its own twisted way, because you force your audience to either pick their criticisms VERY carefully or suffer the wrath of a thousand angry She-Hulk stans. Heck, I've even got lumped into that and I just deconstructed the person.

All they had to do was follow the she-hulk comics and the series would have been a hit. That being a strong woman, that respected people, trying to live her life while also being a hulk, set as a comedy. Instead, they could not stop themselves. The irony is if they wanted a "woke" court case, they could have copied the Starfox (not the fox pilot, but the Marvel Comic character) court case and they could have gone full woke and still been in canon for the storyline.

Your videos on She-Hulk are always clear and concise, and your passion for the comics shows through. To pick out one thing to comment on, one piece I believe the show itself touched on was "people don't/won't like a female lead superhero show/movie" or something close to that. At least from my perspective and experience, I don't think this is true. My reasoning for not really liking Jen/She-Hulk is because of who she is as a Person. She's clearly written to /be/ liked, but... they kinda failed on that for me. You've mentioned in each of your She-Hulk videos why Jen isn't particularly likable already. On a similar note, I never found She-Hulk to even be heroic the entire time, no matter how things were framed to make her seem so. Especially by the end I felt the show was telling me "she's a superhero now!" but again, it really didn't come through to me.
