I WAS RAISED BY THESE GIRLS (and Lucky Star girls) and I'm still so obsessed with gyaru style

I found this anime on the back shelf of the anime section when I was a kid. And let me tell you, I was obsessed! The fashion, the cursing, the energy, it was so fun. Obviously watching as an adult, the problematic parts were glaring. Even though the show is nostalgic, it has it's issues. As always I love your videos. You always give an insightful view on the different shows that you cover. I always enjoy the thoughtfulness you put into your videos 💕

WOW. I used to be so obsessed with these girls!! I grew up on them along with all the early 2000s magical girl anime (Tokyo Mew Mew, Mermaid Melody, Pretty Cure, etc.) & Lucky Star. "Girly" anime was truly the shit back then

SOOOOOO excited you are talking about this anime! I thought it had been forgotten! I still love this anime and watched it again a couple of months ago. I enjoy the sense of freedom the girls have, the fashion, the fun of having a ride-or-die group of friends. Something that my teenage self did not have, and now that I am an adult is hard to find. But the issues are obviously there: the racism, the problematic age-gap relationship between teenage Miyu and 23-year-old Yamato, the girls supporting Aya pursuing Otohata when he doesn't treat her properly, ....

Gal was the first manga I read in seventh grade and It launched my manga nerd Era lol. I watched the show when some kind soul uploaded it illegally on KZbin. Those were the days

I watched GALS for the first time back in 2004 on a free DVD from OtakaUSA. I loved it so much. But man now as an adult I see the problematic parts of it. I always cringed when Aya was headed to her subsidized date. I was SO glad they showed real and hard subjects without ANY characters actually being hurt. I feared grape would pop up. When I read Peach Girl for the first time I'd I originally thought Momo was black. I was like you know what yeah where are the tan Asian main characters at after seeing her. More have come up over the years but for me Momo and Sailor Pluto were my personal favorites. Shout-out to Tokyopop!

The momoiro pic literally had my jaw drop. I’m such an idol fan I can’t believe I never knew that 😭Like, I’m willing to give a bit of leeway to pale ppl raised in antiblack cultures when they, say, tan to a blackfishing level and don’t think about it. But MCZ seriously rolled up in full minstrel gear to a TV show 😭 there’s no way they didn’t have a reference image !! never listening to them again

17:20 only way I could’ve understood his mindset is if he knew of red lining or the no tolerance policy schools that are around most poc communities in the US but I doubt he knew

They're tanning themselves to stand out. I'm from dark skinned country. Dark skin means you have to work out under the sun which means you're poor. Light skinned is prized. I don't see the white people being offended about it.

Because darkening your skin was used as a way to mock darker skinned people.

@@Ellie-bj2uw but ganguro don't. It's a fashion that stems from the desire to boldly stand out and not look like the cookie cutter japanese asthenic. The show mocked the characters being dumbasses. They just so happened to have dark skin. The light skinned characters also have whacky faces when they do dumbass things and get mocked for it. Just because something happens because of one reason doesn't mean that's the only reason something can stem from.
