Is the 2024 Limited still a Viable Option Next to the New Road Glide and Street Glide?

All KZbinrs have or are getting the new bikes..cause they make content (Matt Laidlaw excluded cause he owns a dealership). The Limiteds are set up from the factory to tour, and comes with GPS. The new ones can tour, but with an upcharge for the GPS and no tour pack, and from what I have heard, a little less comfortable. Even with the tech upgrades with the new ones (I like the huge display), I am content with my 2022 CVO Roadglide Limited.

Another note, that the lowers on Limited do not only help block cold wind...they also help deflect rain

I bought a new 24 roadglide few months ago, got about 7000 miles on it now (11000 km since I am in canada). So the limited comes with lowers and mine doesn't, but on the 24 the way the rain deflects off the cooler cover it completely soaks the inside of your shoes and legs. Just a wet hwy is enough to soak your boots. My display completely quit on it. Just a black screen. Have to use my phone now as a speedometer, and nobody know how far the infotainment screen is away. My front brake rotors are completely warped on it since I am not a slow rider. Not impressed with brakes on it. But supposed to be covered under warranty. Got tons of power that's not a issue what so ever. So maybe people should wait a year with buying the new model and go with the old model. Not impressed really.

The lowers, for me, are THE factor. I love them, don't ever want to be without them again. And I live in Southwest Florida. I like the wind protection, I like the look. I ride a 2022 RGL and have no intention of switching. That being said, if the new ones had lowers, or when they come out with the Limited's in the new style, I'd consider it, I guess. I really like the bike I have, and there's nothing I can't do with it. I've owned most of them (softail, dyna, sportster), and I still have a 2003 Road King, but this version of the Limited is, in my opinion, the best motorcycle they've ever made.

I'm still rocking a '14 Ultra Limited with no plans to upgrade anytime soon so my input is based on that...the king tour pack may give off geezer glide vibes but 100% once you have one, you'll never want to go without again. Lol! That thing is so damn handy even when you're not touring. I love it. ✌

I dont like the lowers look but in the winter I use the zip on lowers so I understand why people like them. I always hated the tour pack but decided to try it out got one from amazon TCMT have to say uts very useful I really love I can go to a restaurant bring my leftovers home and what I really like is that I can lock my helmet and my pack don’t have to carry it. I can take it off my sissy bar when I don’t need it, which is great.

Another well done video Matt. You're comparison between these choices is spot on. Lower fairings are probably one of the biggest factors because they're specific to each model. I had an '05 Electra Glide Standard that I installed soft lowers and fork mounted deflectors on to keep the wind off my legs for cooler weather. My '17 Ultra Limited is much more efficient in managing that wind. You can open the doors down there with your feet if it's too warm, I also think heated grips are a game changer and I'll never go without a King Tour Pack with the power port inside again. Even though I'm vertically challenged (compared to you) I also prefer the taller shocks for ride quality. Stock shocks suit me fine since I'm not trying to race it in the King of the Baggers Series. The only reason I would consider trading for the newer Gen would be for the weight as I get older. Maybe the new body style will grow on me over time but I prefer the Rushmore look on these bikes over any other era. As for the stereo, comm. system, nav. and gauge cluster layouts, I could care less, usually don't pay them much attention anyway. I ride to get away and clear my head. An open road and the sound of my pipes is all I need and I've always managed to find my way home. Keep up the superior content!

Test rode a ‘24 117 with the new electronics.. wasn’t blown away and I like long distance riding so I’ll keep my ‘23 limited. It’s tried and true and I’m sure most if not all of the kinks have been exposed and addressed by now. As with any new launch, I’m sure there are things that still need to be worked out and addressed with future upgrades.

I have the 24 Tobacco Fade Limited. People constantly want to see the bike. The new bikes are missing very important items for 2024 - no tour pack and no lower fairings. Shocks also have an extra inch on the limited. When you add the tour pack to actually match the limited it’s expensive to actually match the limited correctly. Lower leg fairings also make a big difference.
@TH3G0ODGUY
@TH3G0ODGUY 6 ай бұрын
Glad you are enjoying the tobacco fade, it’s a beauty! Just to clarify though the new 24 models have the same length and travel as the old limited, with slightly better quality as they both shocks on the 24 have emulsion tech. I’d say the limiteds seat though makes up for that very marginal difference so it’s still more comfortable, but just can’t help myself when it comes to clarifications hahah! Enjoy your bike man!
@MattLaidlaw

Solid points man. Yes, to get that kind of a paint match especially on the Tobacco fade is very difficult if you can't get it from the factory plus it's even more expensive. Congrats on the bike. Those are absolutely stunning bikes.

Matt, here's a thought to ponder. Harley could easily take the Road Glide and Street Glide and build each in, let's say, 10 different color offerings. Then they could offer a Limited Tour Package, with the King Tour Pack with the deluxe Tour Pack passenger's back rest and passenger speakers, front lower fairing, the spot lamps for the Street Glide model, and an upgraded touring saddle. At that point, Harley could discontinue the Ultra Limited and the Road Glide Limited altogether. Everybody wins here, Harley gets to eliminate 2 models, Limited customers can still get what they want via a complete color matched kit, and there would be more color options for all customers to choose from, at the time of purchase. Heated grips would either have to be added to the Limited package or be added to all the Road Glides and Street Glides from the factory. Harley could also offer Limited customers the option to order the Limited Package directly from the factory when they order their bikes, to help keep the price competitive. Harley has already begun offering Long Haul Package (in my example, this would be kicked to the curb), a Day Tripper Package, a Special Package, and an ST Package. Harley has to some degree, already embraced this type of concept. So why not make it a clean sweep and accommodate everybody with 2 models and 4 packages???

One thing you didn't mention is the painted inner fairing on the Ultra Limited. After owning one for 4 years, I can't go back to the flat black plastic look of the new road/street glides. It just looks cheap to me. I would have to go to a new CVO which is way out of the budget to make it like my Ultra.

Great video. Much explanation as usual . I like the looks of the new bikes. I ride a 2019 ultra limited if I was to change it would be to another limited. I like the lowers and the larger tour pack. I ride primarily in Arizona and the southwest part of the states and frankly the way I see it the lowers keep the heat from the road of my lower legs as well as the cold in winter. And I like my hydraulic clutch . That’s what sold me on my bike . As for the cooling of the heads good idea to cool the back cylinder first .

I had a 2000 ultra classic. Loved that bike but it was starting to have issues. I got rid of it and I ended up buying a new 2019 street glide special. Bought the detachable king tour pack. Tall Klock Werks windshield and a solo seat. It's like having two bikes. When I want to go on a long distance trip I put the tour pack on. Load my tent and all my gear up and go. When I want to rip down the back roads when I am home I take the tour pack off and put my solo seat on. To me it's the best of both worlds. My bike now has 105,600 miles on it. Been looking at the new street glides. There sure are alot of switches, buttons and knobs. Kinda intimidating. I wish they had the cigarette lighter adaptor.

Matt, this is a GREAT in-depth analysis. Great job, man! I try to get out of the big city as quickly as possible and into the foothills, mountains, and country, so I really appreciate what you did here. I ride a 2015 Rushmore Ultra Ltd, and a 2015 Indian Roadmaster and I tour long distance. I think that the Goldwing, Chieftain and Roadmaster having all LED hi-vis lighting, heated grips and seats, high-end suspensions, the audio and seating battles, etc, pushed HD to evolve forward in an amazing way. I do see the majority of guys wanting a Road/Street Glide because it's more practical for them to ride a bagger to their favorite local spot for food/ drinks in town. Is the frame on the Road/Street Glide the exact same frame as the Ultra, and are the fork rakes the same? That would be important for someone who actually wants to get away from 4-wheelers to grand tour (minority of guys) and not just stay local (majority of weekend warriors). I don't understand why HD is pushing the Road/Street Glide on city riders when the Road King is a phenomenal bagger. Why did the Road King get shoved to the back?????

Another great vid, Matt! Very informative and comprehensive. Initially, I thought H-D screwed the dealers by introducing only SG/RG models with the new updates. I thought that would make the remaining models a tough sell in comparison. As a former Ultra Ltd owner (and a current CVO Ultra owner), you’re preaching to the choir. Up until the intro of the new CVO RG & RG ST models, I would never have considered anything less than a loaded tourpack-equipped model. I’m psyched to hear that you’re getting a CVO RG ST and am very interested in your take as a long-term owner! I still don’t know if I can go without a tour pack (even my RKC has a detachable leather TP which I rarely take off), but one can be added to the CVO so we shall see! Rubber-side-down, Enjoy and Cheers!

My main concern is that they may ditch the Road King, the model I own, altogether, it’s the 30th Anniversary and not a peep from TMC yet about it! But I for sure think like the Road King, the Limiteds have very much slipped into a certain niche. Hardcore tourer who takes multiple trips a year or lives where weather is cold/can change on a dime, or always needs that extra storage and always has that tour pack on there. I think the Glides will be the best choice for about 85-90 percent. Great thing about Harley, just like the Dynas, stuff gets discontinued but never really goes away. Some riders just like their analog gauges also! But yeah especially this year the Limiteds are for sure a niche bike at this point!
@MattLaidlaw
@MattLaidlaw 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Well the Road King (Standard) is gone at this point but we still have the Road King Special. Yes, I agree the Limited are a Niche bike at this point where less riders are choosing that bike. I think there are less "Road trip minded" riders out there which kinda surprises me. Or maybe it's just that since the baggers like Street Glide and Road Glides got "cooler" most riders just prefer to build-out one of those. After all it's the same frame and if people can get the best of both worlds they will!

@@MattLaidlawI think it’s the brand new toy that everybody just has to have because it’s new. So for the people that would normally go for the Limited, they’re gonna just eat that extra cash to add all the touring gear after the initial purchase so they can have the new bike. I’m sure they’ll drop a limited version of the new style soon. I would assume that this is probably the last year the Limiteds will have the older style setups.

The styling of the new fairings are not for me. Too futuristic for my tastes. But understand why that happens from time to time and theres no doubt the tech improvements have some worth to them. I felt similar when the Rushmores came out and I own an 18 Ultra LTD. So eventually, it grew on me enuf to get one. And future HD riders will get on board eventually as they almost always do. Ultimately, this review covered just about everything one could consider for these bikes. As an older rider, I’d probably grab a LTD if I had to buy one now based on my needs and known exhaust and tuner upgrade capabilities. Otherwise, I’d probably wait a couple years when some of the LTD goodies are available on the newer models with larger radio screens. Hopefully by then the new fairing and tank/bag lines have grown on me. Nice work Matt as usual!

Let me say up front that I'm a lifetime Honda guy, and I ride a 2016 Gold Wing with 100,000 miles on it. THAT SAID... I've had the opportunity over the last year and a half to put some significant miles (many hundreds, if not close to 1000) on a 2011 CVO Road Glide Ultra. I *get* it. It's a nice ride. It makes a nice sound going down the road, it has a charming mechanical presence at speed, and it's not even that hot as long as you're moving. But there's still 3 significant things that are obstacles to me owning a Harley-Davidson touring bike. 1) The vibration. Why, in the name of Willie G., does the Motor Company not employ dual counterbalancers on the touring models? 2) Reliability. The internet is filled with example after example of people needing to rebuild their engines at 50-80K miles, and this is seen as acceptable. I can't wrap my head around that; I EXPECT my Gold Wing to go 300,000 miles on that engine with nothing but regularly scheduled maintenance (which I follow), and if it doesn't I'll be sorely upset. I can't understand why the faithful accept the need for rebuilds. 3) The Price. My god, Harley bikes are expensive. It's a real challenge to justify $30K+ for a new Harley-Davidson touring model. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not slagging on Harleys. I'm saying that I actually enjoy riding the Road Glide that I have access to (even if it's pre-Rushmore), but these are the three issues that keep me from switching teams. I bought my '16 Wing new in crate in June of 2020 for $15K, and have put 25,000 miles a year on it since I bought it. It's a paragon of reliability, and while I think Harley makes beautiful and enviable machines, those 3 obstacles are there, and I don't understand why they aren't addressed. (No doubt the faithful are going to react emotionally to what I said, rather than respond objectively.)

This is a decision from HD that I have a hard time understanding. Sure, the CVO needs more items to make it stand out.. But previous gen specials had the gloss inner, and the plastic on the new bikes makes it look cheap as all get out. That inner is part of the reason I won’t be changing from my ‘22 Ultra to the ‘24 SG. Absolutely crazy they made the piece of the bike you look at the most appear to be the cheapest trash on the thing.

Not having lowers was the biggest thing I missed going from a road glide ultra to the new road glide (Like whoa its cold in the winter LOL) , but the lightness, power, and big digital screen more then makes up for it. So many dealers service writers are uneducated on the new ones and simplicity of so much Harley did, such as a bar change like Thrashin's bars are easily a 1-2 hours job, a stretch at a 3 hour job. But every single dealer I called is quoting 7-10 hour job which is literally insane.

Matt is this new technology coming to the tri glides, cvo . I have a 2020 tri glide and I love the ride.I couldn't go with cvo because of lower wheels and not a smoother ride. I have a serious back injury and lot hardware in my lumbar and pelvis but I love my tri glide and the lowers work great in New England area colder weather. Love Harley and the brand. I started on a 84 shovel head FXEF 1340. Matt keep up the videos and information. All the best to your dad too.

I went to a CVO Street glide from a ultra limited and bought all the stuff to tour two up. Taller windscreen, put Harley Davidson lights on the lowers, got a paint match trunk put the rack on it. Bought the hammock seat. Put a windshield bag on. I also got the small back rest that matches the stock seat and the rack. I can switch the bike up like a swiss army knife 😊 but the ultra limited is still imho the best touring motorcycle ever built... the wife and I have our own bikes for days we just want to run around so now the cvo stays in full dress mode most of the time and we use it to go out of town together. long story short for two up riding and mostly traveling go with the limited imho...

The king tour pack on my ‘13 ultra gives m the space I need to use it to commute to work. I work at different sites and have items I need to bring with me. It’s definitely a bonus and something I would look for in a new bike. Additionally, in my opinion, the tour pack is easier to just throw items into than the saddlebags

The big factor that wasn’t covered is the resale values of both bikes. The limiteds are going to be even harder to sell next year if and when Harley updates these bikes to the Gen 3. I brought a 120th anniversary ultra and it was hard to sell to move to a 24 CVO.
@Lasnoe
@Lasnoe 6 ай бұрын
Obviously you get the new gen and build it out. Unless the old gen limited is discounted. If I was the dealer I wouldn’t want to get stuck with all the old gen inventory so I’d probably discount them. Though some customers don’t care about the gen they have so those people might pay full price for an old gen but I’d assume not many customers are like that. If you’re not worried about moving old gen bikes and aren’t willing to discount then I guess it’s a no brainer to build out a new gen or wait for a new gen limited

This is almost exactly what I'm going through right now. I've been making the same comparison. I do wish someone would do a video comparing the Road Glide to the Road Glide CVO. What does the CVO have that the regular Road Glide does not have. Would like a new bike this year but I'm considering waiting for the 2025 models.
@dariuswentz8726

Fit and finish and the size of the motor are two key features when looking at the differences between a regular road glide and a CVO. The regular rogue glide comes with a 117 CVO 121. You also get a better Sound system with a CVO. Not to mention better paint and rims. I hope that helps.
@rontaylor2094
@rontaylor2094 5 ай бұрын
@@dariuswentz8726 Thanks for you response. The things you mentioned are the obvious differences and to me the 2023 1/2 CVO in Whiskey Neat was the best paint job I've seen yet from the factory. It's the smaller items that go unnoticed until you get the bike home, the accessories. Does it have the same software and adjustments as the regular Road Glide? Does it have heated grips, cruise control, places to plug in your heated vest, hill control, all the creature comforts of the CVO minus the paint, gloss finish inside the fairing and engine size.

One major difference between the old and the new styles is you cannot put a 135 crate motor or even a 131 stage four kit on the new generation bikes (yet). So if one is looking for a little more performance, all of the 23 models that are still available and three models for the 24 year, those being the road king, special, ultra and limited can be fitted with the performance kits, where as the new bikes only have stage 2 compatibility. Of course those living in CA are s.o.l. either way.
