We were allowed beards in the Navy in the late 60's-early 70's (Adm Zumalt era). You had to get it approved (you needed a new ID card) as long as your job did not need a clean shave (mask seal). Neat was required. Mine was under 2" . My shipmates called it an 'Abe Lincoln' style.
@FinalLugiaGuardian Жыл бұрын
Some Sub mariners are allowed longer hair and beards, at the captians' discretion, while the sub is underway and no media is on board. But they must have a clean shave and a hair cut before pulling into port. One of my friends was a sub mariner and he would look like a full mountain man by the time their sub was pulling in to port. At that point though, he would just take out his clippers and buzz everything off his head and face.

Sure will save you money on shaving equipment, stuff has gotten ridiculously expensive to shave 🪒. As long as the Airmen keep it well groomed and trimmed then growing a beard shouldn’t be an issue. Personally I think it does help lift one’s self esteem due to the fact that most men do get really bad skin irritation and having a nice groomed and trimmed beard does help you hide it better in order to give it time to clear up. Yeah, absolutely grow a decent regulation allowed beard.

Don’t mind the hands and pockets and phone thing, (we all know certain people still do it 👀) but I need…my beard…it’s honestly a waste of time trying to get ready and having to shave all over and checking to make sure there’s no strays, and the moment I saw females could have pony tails ??? I knew there needed to be a change. I’m pretty sure I heard SF keeps beards in the field, it’s all been proven there’s a number of times that having long hair can get caught in stuff, nobody is really trying to use chemical WF anymore anyway, I think we should just have it. Next to good pay, that’s all I want.😂

I served in the Israeli military at a time when everyone was allowed to grow beards, not the case anymore. Aside from the actual freedom of choice grated, it was a huge benefit during the early stages of basic because shaving for inspection each morning was one less thing to worry about. The drawback kicked in with chemical warfare training later on , notably a long-standing issue where facial hair obstructs a gas mask's seal. According to my personal experience, even if you can get beyond this. facial hair will still cause your vision to be obscured in combat circumstances , or even training , due to the excessive steam produced by a common standard issue gas mask. This can be detrimental in such scenarios.

I don't care if beards are never ever allowed in the military. It really doesn't effect me. Because, in the end, we should all look similar in uniform. THAT said, I find it offensive that only specific people(not including the shaving profile holders) are allowed to have beards when other groups aren't because of some exemption. Make it across the board or enforce the regulation as it is written with no exception.

When I think about us military and beards...I think about GWOT and SOF... mainly SF, CAG, CIA ground branch/SAC etc...then the rest of SOF. Now the why...why did they do it during gwot? Well the CIA guys were doing it first in Afghanistan because they were embedded with their Islamic assets, they did it to fit in and make it more comfortable because in that culture/religion...men grow beards, the best they can... doesn't matter if it's a patchy beard or super bushy beard. That's where all the photos started coming out of the SF guys with their ODA and indigenous forces, and having beards. Then the rest of SOF started poping up in photos with them...SEAL etc, it became less about fitting in with indigenous friendly forces and more about "hey we are cool guys, unconventional warriors, we have relaxed grooming standards" people gotta be honest, that's what it became about even in SF, because these guys would do it even when they'd deploy to places that didn't have a lot of Islamic influence like the guys who go to south America and partner with them, or the ones who would go to southeast Asia where most of them Asian men there can hardly grow facial hair. I think it should be a field/Garrison thing like you brought up. And that's how it usually is in SF.... Special Forces guys can grow their sht out when they are In the field and or deployments...but in garrison they shave it all off and come back to standards. I'm really not sure man. I knew one guy who had a chit for shaving because shaving caused him really bad ingrown hairs, and I mean terrible...this guy has a problem, he'd still get hair bumps because he had to keep it trimmed pretty low still and that in of itself would give him bumps. And I remember sitting and talking to him one day just kicking the shit and a company gunny walked past who didn't know us and he looked once, then twice and he was on both of our asses in a couple seconds had us both at attention my guy was trying to tell him he had a chit and he just kept yelling then he yelled at me and tried to accuse me of having a bad shave...which was impossible because at 19 I literally couldn't grow any facial hair and I'd still shave lol. Anyways he finally was able to pull his no shave chit out and show him...and it's the first time he'd ever actually seen one...this is a gunnery sergeant with a lot of time in...and of course he didn't apologize to either of us, he just got pissed off and walked away and said something about speaking to my friends leadership about it. Dumbest bs ever but it was funny. What ended up happening is they put him on some meds, like some cream stuff or whatever to lessen the bumps, so he had to start shaving again but the stuff worked fairly well... he'd still get some bumps but not as bad.

Firefighters definitely can't have beards, people who work in oil and gas mainly on the rigs can't have them either...why? Because facial hair breaks that seal and those people definitely need those masks. I agree, I hope they don't change it. Those standards are good for the military. I'm out, been out for a little bit (2016) . And I have a beard like you as well, but nothing I do in civilian life requires me to not have one. I wouldn't want the seal on my gas mask broken because of facial hair though in an emergency. I'm surprised SOF was able to do it, getting missions so close to the enemy in places where these people are known to use nerve gas.

@derricklockett99652 жыл бұрын
Respectfully, and this is just my opinion, what's going on? If you wanted to be an airman, sailor or now a guardian, I feel thats the branch you should have joined. This is why when comparing soldiers and marines, some people think there's no comparing the two. I envy the marines, they actually feel that they are an elite fighting force because they buy in to their traditions and they don't care what other branches are doing, they feel you should be honored to be in their beloved service and you earn the right to call yourself a marine. That being said, I'm a proud Army veteran from way back in the 80s. Back then standards were strict, but you complied with the rules and traditions, or you suffered consequences, and you learned discipline and hopefully you carried these life tools with you the remainder of your life as a person. I can recall while I was in, I was one of those very people who wished they could have a beard, but I'm glad I didn't. I'm also guilty of complaining about almost everything. It's easy to lose sight of that you're part of something bigger than yourself, you are supposed to be different than civilians, you're a soldier. I completed my active service and when I was on duty, I shaved. I became a law enforcement deputy of over twenty years with an agency with a strict shaving and uniform policy, and when on duty, I shaved. I've since retired and now I don't shave. I look back now and personally, I respect the structure, uniformity and the discipline in my life. I can appreciate that squared away look when a solider is in uniform. Also, you choose to serve in a volunteer organization with over two hundred years of traditions, some good, some not so good. To all my American army brother and sister soliders. Buy into the mission and SUCK IT UP.
@MaximusMongoose Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your service, sir. Traditions are only decisions that were made along time ago... You can always make new traditions. Fighting with muskets was a tradition of the continental US Army. We're not fighting with muskets any longer. So, if dress and appearance standards can be upheld with a beard, and still complete our mission to our highest capabilities, why can a soldier have a beard. As a former soldier yourself, you know that a lot of these calls are going to be made at the commanders discretion. There's still a bunch of diehard first sergeants, Command sergeant majors that are not going to let their units grow their beards. It's the same way that the army allows you to roll up your sleeves but there's some units that don't allow you to roll up your sleeves.
