Sounds awesome, how does it compare to your 2010 explorer? Also I feel the need to say how much I hate that Gibson have decided to give explorer's and v's a huge price jump in recent years, I would never pay that kinda money for one today. Especially when the 70's + 80's inspired models, as you mentioned, fail miserably at being accurate to their respective eras, and command a price premium for that.

It’s more the 70s V that doesn’t follow suit. 70s Vs has Valutes, Thinner Bodies, Smaller Headstocks, Pickup Rings, etc… and the new ones don’t. The 70s series I can understand the price jump for the binding, which is an expensive process, The 80s series has a silkscreened logo and no binding. The pricing for those is just because people have asked them to make them for YEARS. As far as the comparison between this and my 2010… they are very similar. The 2010 has 500t in the bridge, which is a rather hot pickup. I’m at the point now where I prefer less heat in my pickups as I get a better feel from them. But feel wise… very similar. Cheers -Ryan

@@Crypticmaskguitar Thanks for the comparison, glad to hear the new explorer’s still hold their weight! Also, don’t forget that a lot of the 80’s explorers came with alder bodies or maple necks, it’s very likely James Hetfield’s “So What” explorer had those woods and not any mahogany. I was expecting the 80’s series to see these changes in timbers and what was released was really disappointing in that respect. Still good guitars though I’m sure

That is absolutely true. Once James switched to ESP he went with Mahogany, though... The 80s series was requested so highly because of James... and most of the small run reissues were with Mahogany, rather than Alder/Maple. It's a really odd situation. Mahogany is easier for Gibson to source and it would be an "Extra Step" for them to keep a new stock of wood for just two models. At the same time... Maple Necks have mainly been used (In recent years) with the more "Budget Friendly" Guitars. So releasing those guitars with a different stock of wood and a neck that *might* be received as "Budget Friendly"... in their eyes could make the guitars unfavourable. The stupid thing is that they released them in Black and not White (USA Gibson Website Only for the White). The Black 80s Explorers are just sitting on shelves, unfortunately. Hopefully they change that and release the white along with the black. Cheers -Ryan

I 100% agree, the whole approach to these era tribute guitars' has been odd. Especially since they've been hellbent on embracing the company's heritage, going as far as to release the seriously ugly Theodore. If alder maple is the historic notable feature why not include it, at least they don't have to do any extra sourcing for the maple. I will say this, the best les paul I have ever played far and away was a Zakk Wylde les paul custom, with a maple neck! Thanks for the replies, Amal. @@Crypticmaskguitar

Haha! I liked the idea of the Theodore. I didn’t really want one until I saw the USA model with a tune-o-matic and stop bar with Humbuckers. It’s almost like a double cut. That’s sad, I know. Cheers -Ryan

I have one of the early 2019 models and IMO it's one of the best damn guitars I've ever played . I own a 2016 R9 & a 2019 60th Anny 59 LP and I have to be 100% , my Explorer is just as great or even better . I think it's better than my 2016 R9 . The PAF's are BurstBuckers from Nov of 2023 . I bought the matching Flying V and it is also incredible . I know JC & Ceaser really wanted to right the ship at Gibson and had to release great guitars in order to get players back from Gibson's bad QC issues under Henry .

I love the look of the Explorer but I’m only short (5.”’1) so I’m not sure if it’ll be too big

I'm a "Fighting" 5' 6" (5' 5 7/8"). It's not too big. I swear James Hetfield plays crouched because he's too tall! haha! Cheers -Ryan
