A lot of it is the man who a father gives his daughter to must face him. Shake his hand and look him in the eye. Man stuff. Y’all wouldn’t understand. You know that date that pulls up and honks twice. She runs out and hops in the car. A father will never approve to that. Come to the door, knock, dad opens, he’s sees his shotgun, he gasps, Mr so and so I’m here to take your daughter out on a date. Start to finish. Dads know. Even moms. But sometimes you need a respect or fear factor into play. Someone can be legally done wrong. How do you prevent this and protect her. But if she grown she grown. She gonna do what she wants

Sometimes your family can see something isn’t going to work out and warn you, but an adult should make their own decision and whether they want to take the parents advice or not is up to them and I feel the parents should respect that at the end of the day.

I think you can listen to their opinions, but at the end of the day, they can't stop you from being with that person if you are an adult. I also think there are certain personalities that clash. It doesn't mean they don't like your partner. There is a difference between them being wrong like abuse and your parents just having slight annoyances with them. I think there are certain parts of everyone's personalities that you don't necessarily like.

Once again this is one of those topics where you damned if you do , you damned if you don’t... my life decisions should not be up to my parents if I’m here to love on you and only you your parents should respect... like the old school mentality is cool and all but there are some parents that intentionally push their child’s partner away and that person ends up heartbroken if the child of said parent says no and then if you cut off your parents for doing you then you’re in the wrong... it’s so crazy to me
@luwamalem95373 жыл бұрын
Exactly! It really is that old mentality that some parents try to force on you. They just need to accept that it's your life & there's only so much that they can force you to do or dictate! Who you date should not be one of them
@cat567893 жыл бұрын
Exactly and I also feel like it’s so dangerous because parents can potentially have their child’s relationship ruined just because of what they think and they have that old school mentality of “no one will ever be good enough for you” like what Ryan said no matter who your with your parents won’t ever be satisfied but to that I say who cares what your parents think about your relationship if your child loves someone and they love them and treat them with decency, respect, etc. parents shouldn’t deminish that because if the child breaks up with their partner they may not be able to find that love ever again, your parents do not control your relationship or what goes on in it you and your partner do that’s just my opinion, I also think your man doesn’t need to ask the parents or the girls dad permission to marry their daughter

So i told her that, i stopped confesing my problems with her in regards with my relationship and she had nothing else to do than to accept it. But i have a friend who's mother can't stay out of her relationships , always making a fuss out of nothing , always complaining about her boyfriend's apearance (because her bf doesn't look the way her mom wants) and all of this weights a lot on her relationships even to the point that she breaks up with them because she can't take any more bs from her mom... I agree with what Adrienne said. It's your life you're the one sleeping with the person not your parents. BUT I cannot be in a relationship with a man if his family doesn't like me. Maybe because I've never had that problem before, thankfully my in laws are like family to me and every guy I've dated his family loved me, but that's just it if I don't have that kind of relationship with the man's family then I don't want a relationship with him! I'm saying do you want to go to his family house, and they all give you the cold shoulder or the stank eye or worse, not even be invited at all Cuz I sure as hell don't! yeah, it's easy to say idgaf what they say I'm not dating them I'm dating him that's my man this that and a third, but it's going to get to you eventually and there goes your relationship. So, in a way I would have to say, yes if the parents don't approve relationship is over. Unless you have a mom like Ryan who always had high standards then you can ignore lol.

I agree with Adrienne. However, let’s be real. When you bring home a partner or go to their house, you want their family to like you. Even though a lot of people say they don’t care about what other people think of them, in reality, every human cares in a way. I don’t think it should be up to your parents to decide who you should love. But you should definitely listen to their opinion. Sometimes they can end up being right. Personally me, if I go to a guy’s house and their parents don’t like me, I wouldn’t really feel comfortable being around and vice versa. This topic is complicated, but at the end, we all care in a way to be liked and want our partner to be liked as well.

@Sk88p3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what the parents see that could be a problem, as to why they do not approve. Sterling not asking Ryan's mother for her hand being the reason she is still salty, is just silly. Ryan knows why it did not occur to him to ask, and that is all that matters. But if your parent knows what you want and need in a partner, and sees that that person is lacking and sees that her son/daughter does not look really happy, that is something more serious.

I'm not American, I'm South African so yes if my parents don't agree to me marrying this man then I cannot marry him. This is because in my culture it doesn't just stop at asking for my hand in marriage. His parents will ask for my hand on his behalf and once my parents agree then a date is set where my aunts and uncles will negotiate magadi(a bride price, bride wealth or dowry) with his aunts and uncles, our parents will always be present throughout. Once an agreement is reached which can be a mix of live cows and a monetary equivalent to cows e.g 1 cow= $100/ R10000 meaning if 6 cows is the agreed upon amount then $600/ R60000 is the amount of money my family must receive as well as gifts for the whole family, a list is written. A date is the set when he and his family will bring all this to my family. Once that is done then I will be presented to my husband and in-laws. A cow will be slaughtered and the meat cooked. Then it's a celebration, all this happens at my home. This is the day my parents officially release me to my husband and in-laws. We can then proceed to plan and have a what we in South Africa call a white wedding where I will wear a white bridal gown, have bridesmaids and the whole nine yards. Then we sign the marriage papers. Then have another cultural celebration at my husband's home where I will be welcomed into my new family. In my culture as well as many others in South Africa marriage isn't just a joining of 2 people it's a joining of 2 families as well.

Hm, I feel like this is always going to be a controversial topic no matter what. As parents, they have the right to input their opinion and even go as far as to say that they don't want you dating them. That's their opinion. However, at the end of the day, it's your life & they can't dictate everything that you do or don't do when it comes to who you date. I will never understand arranged marriges or forced marriages because, how is someone (parent or not), going to tell who I'm going to spend the rest of my life with, have kids & tolerate!
