Saying the submariner is an equavalent of an Audi A3 or BMW 3 series is gross understatement. Audi A3 is an average Joe car. You will see dime in a dozen A3’s driving around everywhere you go. you aint gonna see a submariner on the wrist of an average Joe. The average wristwatch is something like a Seiko or apple watch. If anything a submariner is base model Porsche 911 or BMW M series. Audi S5. A submariner will still turn heads in an average setting. People are going to notice it. No one is gonna notice an Audi A3.

depends on the country you live in, due to the extreme tax rate on vehicles in my country an Audi A3 is not for the average Joe. It's the same price as an A5 in another country. But the Rolex Submariner is quite common here, lots of people wear them. Could be fake ones too so maybe I'm wrong

I would disagree, the submariner isn’t as common as an A3 yes, but it’s pretty close and definitely worn by the average Joe. I wouldn’t look twice at someone wearing a sub, it’s extremely common and basic compared to the other models.

But you aint gonna see many average Joes Driving it except some fools who are desperate to flex and spend everything they got on monthly bills. İf it’s damn common where you live, like you see a submariner all over the place, you either live in a dream world of Super rich environment, and completely detached from reality, or you live in a country where everyone has access to 100 dollar fakes. I live in Los Angeles. I bet You will hardly see a person with a submariner walking through Whole foods. But you gonna see multiple A3’s and BMW 3’s at the parking lot.

Rolex makes around 1.2m watches a year. Audi makes around 1.6m cars. The scale is very comparable. Porsche production is around 300k of which only around 40k are 911's. Rolex is far more ubiquitous than Porsche 911's.

I will never understand the Rolex-BMW/Audi analogy... say the cheapest car is 10k and the cheapest Audi 30k (they perform the same function for 3 or 4x the price). With Rolex and luxury timepieces in general we are talking about a completely obsolete tech, unnecessary toy that is at least 100x the price of a very decent, more accurate watch

Steel Rolex is definitely high end Audi or 911 IMO. Exactly the same design and quality standards. I have had loads of Audis and zero problems with reliability. Any issues got fixed ASAP. Absolutely no messing around. Have never had a Rolex issue.

I wear my LV sub green bezel . I’ve noticed So many people just looking at it - it’s a classic and a stand out one that’s just class . I have never seen the steel Daytona get noticed - it just doesn’t stand out like the Starbucks I suppose but that’s my experience of wearing the LV and people see it and stare at it and sometimes comment a bit too . I’ve never seen people react the same way to an Audi A3 but to be fair I don’t drive one

I just went to an AD today, I never bought a watch before, so my silly self thought there was a list for a daytona. The sales advisor was super kind, he had me try on several different models, including the daytona and I was surprised that I actually liked the look and feel of the submariner more. It was heavier and the bezel thickness made a difference on my wrist. Are these worth buying from the AD or would it be okay to get from "grey market"?

I've owned my 16610 since 1998 but frankly I pretty much stopped wearing it around 5 years ago when this f-in hype started. Now I wear my Glashütte Sports Evolution from 2001 instead which is a watch only the truly initiated know about and "understand".

I travel the World with my job, and I can’t take that much with me. I do love nice things, and being only a “few things,” it allowed me to splurge a bit, and these iconic heirlooms are taken care, and will be passed down to next generation. Of each thing, like a camera, watch, or bag- I have a daily driver, and something for special occasions😂. A Leica M6(SO), Rollei 35S(DD), Paillard Bolex H16(SO), iPhone 13 Pro Max (DD), Rolex Submariner in Black and Hulk (SO), Omega Speedmaster (Weekender), and a Tissot V8 Swissmatic (DD), and Automatic III (DD+), but my favorite time piece crazy enough is a Cartier 8-Day Travel Clock from Tiffany & Co. that I restored. I have my eyes on a Carl F. Bucherer lately, but discipline has held me off as I’ve already let the Gun Collection get way out of control!!! Plus, running film cameras is anything but cheap, but I am trying to slowly transition to a Sony NEX 7 (that allows using vintage Zeiss Film Lenses), and Modern Touit Zeiss Autofocus Lenses, and funny, as he said, when home a BMW M3 in Triple Black. Since I am barely home, the mileage stays very low. So, if you want great things, pick a Travel Career. Watch Stores in Europe and International Airports don’t have the BS long waiting lists. Also, the best kept secret in Luxury watches? They are really free. Keep it 3-5 years, love and enjoy it! Get bored with it? Sell it and get your dream watch, it could be free, to very cheap, to you get some money back on multi year ownership. Same with fine cameras.

It’s the only Rolex model I don’t own. I really have no appetite for it. I think because I have the deep sea James Cameron. I can get all the technology for £12k and it’s a more enticing beautiful piece to the eye I have bypassed the sub. However the GMT is a different story. I guess it comes down to personal preferences at the end of the day

Glashutte is almost a boutique watchmaker with lots of hand finishing. Rolex are mass produced. Rolex makes around 1.2million watches which is similar to Audi making 1.6 million cars.

Seeing a datejust on someones wrist isn't that common either. It is still a $6,000-$10,000 watch. It is not easy to pull the trigger on a Rolex. I wear a Rolex everyday. 1 out of 100 people will mention it, usually because they are also a timepiece fan.

Exactly. More proper comparison would have to be something like a Porsche for rolex. And submariner would be a base model 911. Audi A3 is a Tissot PRX at best.

Unfortunately a Submariner out of watches really is just the start of the luxury watch market. There are so many more expensive watches and even dive watches out there there. The Sub and Datejust are about the same price at retail, 41mm datejust 10,500 and Submariner date steel 10,250 black bezel or 10,800 with green bezel. An oyster perpetual start at 6,400 so maybe that’s what you meant. The Sub is a dime a dozen in the Boston metro area and NYC/westchester area. There’s even my kids friends parent who drives a Toyota Sienna wearing one. If you want to compare to an exotic car definitely needs to be much more rare like an AP or Patek. Or even rarer like a Lange or RM. Rolex makes great watches they just aren’t limited production or inaccessible to the average upper middle class. Taking my daughter and her horses to one week long horse show costs more then a Sub, unless it’s full gold.

@@AhmetAtalayOfficial average upper middle class in the US is 150-300k a year. Middle class in the US as of 2021 was just over 70k. 50k is not even considered middle class anymore and probably shouldn’t be leasing or buying an a3.

No watch thief will stop me for my Casio Duro. Also, Rolex Sub is a great watch, would be an important part of any collection. But not for $15-16k. For this money I could get at least five fantastic watches. And there will come a time, that waiting lists will be gone and people at Rolex will again be grateful for us wanting to buy their watches.

Oftentime, people who ask if the Rolex is ‘real’ are people who just want to confirm to themselves that they’ve actually SEEN or know someone who has a Rolex. Most people don’t know anyone who wears a luxury watch. They may know someone who drives a ‘flash car’ but seeing an actual authentic Rolex on the wrist of a person you know is not common for the ordinary person. Is it real is not a question wealthy people ask.

If you are in the watch community then you see nice watches everywhere but if you are not then it simply doesn't register. The average person could not tell a Rolex from an Omega from a Cartier. In the firm I work at people walk around with Daytona's and Datejusts and other high end watches regularly but most people don't really know that it is anything special because most people aren't watch enthusiasts. It is like an average guy noticing a Hermes handbag.

Most don't have running water. In the developed world they are common. Rolex produces almost as many cars as Audi produces cars. It is about 1.2m watches to 1 6m cars. Rolex is a huge company that mass produces watches on an industrial scare. This isn't a small manufacturer like Lange that is largely hand finishing all their watches.
