Honest question; Why are auctions the place to determine the state of the vintage watch market? I buy vintage watches regularly and the market seems the same as it always has been, at least to me. The watches I want are no harder or less hard to get, they have just become more expensive. But everything has become more expensive, Including food. For example; the neo-vintage 16710 for sale on Adams website is a great watch and there are many of them for sale at the moment on the open market. From Dealers, forums, ebay, etc. And they get sold. And then there are more of them. It's endless. Wouldn't that suggest that the vintage market is strong? What do auctions have to do with that? Is it more specific to rare, 6 figure, type vintage watches? Maybe it's another world that I don't understand.
@asburycollins91822 ай бұрын
Auctions are used to set the market price for many things. In stores they will be more expensive. Very common
@mikekingsborough12 ай бұрын
@@asburycollins9182 I was just looking at the results of a few past actions in 2022 and 2023 within the sub-50k range. Just to curb my enthusiasm. Primarily the submariner 5513 ft first and mtr first examples. Many of them aren't indicative at all of the current asking price both from dealers and private sellers. What's more, they have only slightly incrementally moved since 2021. If it's about "what people will pay" to determine the artificial asking price I don't really understand why you'd use an auction as the measuring stick for this. Especially for the majority of used items within the 10-50k range as a single "auction" is such a small pool of data compared to the global marketplace.
@davide86412 ай бұрын
there is information lag between the first movers and the people who just buy a watch to buy a watch
@mikekingsborough12 ай бұрын
@@davide8641 So let's say a sub 5513 sells right now for around 18k USD privately across the globe? but then at a bunch of auctions over the course of 2024 they sell for closer to 50k (maybe some rich people decided to overpay or alcohol and ego was involved) in a year or so the global price for that same 5513 will be 50k? That's how these dictate the private market.

A few celebrities started wearing strange old Cartier some time ago and it totally started a new trend. These are not THAT expensive but often harder to find. And these clients dont care about watchmaking at all, its just a trend. Cartier Crash today is what Daytona and GMT and 5711 were during the covid era. Just the latest status symbol trend... I am really interested how long will this last and how it will end...

Adam, you know I respect your knowledge and acumen when it comes to watches. I mean no offense, but failing to recognize the auction premium was 20% and not 27% is a rookie mistake. A dealer with 10 years experience should know better. A little Monday Morning Quarterbacking, but you should always know your real costs before making a bid. There is never a substitute for preparation. The lack of prep probably cost you from buying the Breguet Tourbillons, and significant profits.
@thexardas83952 ай бұрын
Breguet from 2000 I would buy to wear but Cartier quartz or anything from 70-80 for that kind of money is insane. Collectors are strange people. repairing those watches if something happens is insanely expensive and wearing them is not as much fun as someone who never had a vintage watch might think.

Assuming they take another 10% off the seller, even at 20% BP these auction houses are making a killing. They will find a way to keep things afloat
@mentawatches2 ай бұрын
You know, I used to think that as well. But these auction houses have MAJOR overhead. Just the printing of catalogs costs a fortune. Certainly in the art world, they make a killing. Not sure about the watch world. However, a lot of people get stars in their eyes when considering auctioning a watch, and think it will sell for all the money in the world, and they neglect other avenues to sell their watch…which usually could net them more money 🤷🏼♂️

@@mentawatches there are tons of auction houses that only charge 10-15% premium, Sotheby's, Christies and Phillips are not the only players in town. Also, I feel much more comfort when the market tells me what my watch is worth, vs a dealer who is trying to low ball me. I ended up selling my vintage pieces to dealers who marked them up 50-60% on chrono 24. Lesson learnt.
@mentawatches2 ай бұрын
10-15%..of the hammer price. Auction houses have zero risk. If your watch under performs, they shrug their shoulders. Dealers are putting up their own money and taking the risk. You don’t cry when a dealer overpays you though (which happens all the time, we lose money on mistakes every week). That being said, if a dealer is marking up your watch 50-60%, then yes, they likely underpaid you. Industry average is usually right around 10% margin.
@jta.712 ай бұрын
@@mentawatches I don't cry either ways, but when u say u make mistakes every week, surely doesn't tie up with the fact that you've been in the business long enough to have made tons of profit, its no surprise to see vintage dealers and other watch dealers have nice homes, expensive cars as most drain their richer clients off cash. This profession reminds me of a used car dealer, RE broker or an old school stock broker , ¨the point of all this is to take the money from the clients pocket and keep in yours ¨ I´ve been a collector for 20 years and not surprised how dealers are always hyping up brands, first it was rolex, then cartier, Daniel Roth etc etc...I am sure there are some honest dealers in your profession, but they are few and far in btw.

Maybe the vintage market is dead TO YOU since you didn't win anything as you simply under estimated how strong money laundering still happening right now in Asia.
